Uillean pipes

With reference to my previous message on the Irish lilt, I also became aware of the difference in the playing of the Uillean Pipes on Na Laetha Geal Moige (Watermark) and Smaointe (Shepherd Moons). Expressing my ignorance of Uillean Pipes, I would have thought that they would sound alike on these two pieces. Are there differences in the registers that they can be played? Or do the differences lie in the musicians playing the two pieces? Davy Spillane played the pipes on Na Laetha Geal Moige and Lian O'Flionn played them on Smaointe. I prefer the sound of the pipes on Na Laetha Geal Moige. What do others think in this regard?

I believe the difference lies in the instruments themselves. No two Uillean pipes sound the same, well, at least for sensitive ears. Just as no two violins sound the same.

Yes, it seems the pipes in Na Laeth Geal Moige sound a bit cleaner than in Smaointe.

Has anybody ever heard the track Caoinleach Cu Chulainn from the Riverdance CD?

I just wanted to mention a site that I found surfing around the Ceolas music page http://celtic.stanford.edu/ceolas.html

Anyway, this site is very informative about uilleann pipes and how they differ from other bagpipes. The site is: http://www.aniar.com/pipes.html
