Knowing this stuff isn't necessary to your enjoyment of Bush & is really just here for the curious & the bored. (NB: I've noticed this list cropping up elsewhere online with no credit to this site, which is where it originated...tsk, tsk...please link back here if you're going to use any of these definitions. Apart from any thing else, it's boring to see the same list on site after site.)
Bush:"In England there are lots of meanings for Bush. You smoke bush, both men & women have bushes-which is a very important point, it's not some kind of sexist thing. And we live near Shepherd's Bush. Also I just like the 'shhh' at the end of the word" (Gavin).
glycerine: In the July 96 issue of DETAILS, Gavin is quoted: "It's nitroglycerine, as opposed to hand soap. I am fascinated by an inanimate object that can cause so much destruction. It can sit there like a fat wad, and then it blows up..." Nitro-glycerine is, as seen on the cover of the Glycerine single btw, a yellowish oily highly explosive liquid made by adding glycerine to nitric & sulphuric acids. The inspiration for this charged (haha) metaphor was Suze Demarchi, not Jasmine Lewis as commonly assumed.
Holloway: name of a prison for women in England.
Kilburn: predominantly black/Irish area of north-west London where Gavin grew up.
minnie mouse line: "mm has grown up a cow/dave's on sale again": reference to David Bowie's Life on Mars ("Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow/Lennon's on sale again").
paracetamol: what the British call ASA (Tylenol).
peccadilloes: small sins.
Razorblade Suitcase:On Howard Stern/Nov/96, Gavin explained the title:"it's like people making their minds up about you...like people coming to you with an agenda...sort of emotional baggage..."
Red Stripe: Jamaican brand of beer, quite popular in England.
Rupert & Julie: two friends of Gavin's who were amongst many drowned August 22/89 when the boat they were on was hit by a dredger on the river Thames.
semtex: ingredient commonly used in IRA explosives.
Sixteen Stone:"the combined weight of our recording engineer & a bacon sandwich"(Gavin/Spin radio interview '96).Alternately, the hefty weight of a prostitute who advertised herself as "slim", hired by a friend of Gavin's years ago. And, if you want to get really obscure, a line from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales:"The miller was a chap of sixteen stone" ...but that has nothing to do with anything...neither does the fact that The Clash's circa '80 tour was dubbed "16 Ton" (then again...).
Strawberry Fields:name of a youth home in Liverpool used by John Lennon in a song from The Beatles' 1967 Magical Mystery Tour album, "Strawberry Fields Forever". Also the name of two small parks commemorating Lennon; one created in 1980 shortly after his murder, near The Dakota apt bldg in NYC, the other by Abbey Road in London. Gavin reportedly keeps photos of Lennon in his home and used to live a couple of doors down the street from Lennon's old flat in Earl's Court, London.
tantric: from the word 'tantra'- Hindu or Buddhist mystical writings.
vicadin: prescription pain medication with possible side effects such as delusions of grandeur, insomnia, hyperactivity & feelings of invicibilty.
willy: childish British word for penis.
zen:form of Buddism emphasizing value of meditation & intuition.
