Ben stood in a club, he looked around, he didn't
remember the place, yet the bouncer seemed to know who he was. He really missed
the club scene, not that he had never went clubbing with the band, it was just different
with his friends. They were all mainly the same. When he had gone clubbing with the
band it was just different, everyone did something else. Ben and his friends mingled,
talked to anyone who was still breathing, within an hour of them being there, they mainly
knew everyone.
Daniel was always fun to take clubbing Ben thought with a
smile. First they'd walk in and Dan would shyly follow Ben around while he 'mingled'.
Then watching Dan dealing with the females was also funny. Some beautiful woman
would walk up and start talking to Dan, and he'd answer her in a quiet shy voice, always
casting his eyes downward, Ben began to believe that Daniel pulled the shy thing
attentionaly, the girls loved it. But it was when Dan got some alcohol into him that he
began to loosen up and could match Ben with all his mingling and flirting.
Ben remembered when he'd comment to Daniel about the
whole flirting act. 'Why don't you flirt back a bit?' Ben would ask Daniel as a cute red
head would walk away. 'I have a girlfriend..' would always be the answer Daniel would
give Ben. 'Oh, and you're going to let her, who isn't even here, get in the way of your
fun. It's just a little chatting.. No one is asking for anything,' then he would laugh, 'Man
Daniel, if I ever get myself a girlfriend I'm not going to let her get in the way of my club
scene!'
Ben was snapped out of his flashbacks as a bubbly
brunette literally threw herself at him, "Benny!!" she gushed as she hugged him
tight.
Ben pulled away a bit, "Rimmy, hi there.." It dawned on
Ben, that Daniel was so right. It wasn't so much that Willow was 'getting in the way' of
his club scene. It's just that it didn't seem right.
Rimmy beamed at him, "Hey, this is so cool seeing you!! I
mean, I should have figured when I ran into Karl and all. And let me add, that boy is
pissed! He lets himself get liquored up so quickly. Ah well, he's fun when he's drunk.
So, how are you!? How's that band going?"
"Yeah, it seems like it's been ages since I've seen you.
I'm doing good. The whole band is great. They're a lot of fun. I've met a lot of great
people because of them.."
"That's good. As long as you're doing great we won't
have to kick some savage ass," Rimmy laughed and pushed her hair out of her face,
"So what's new with you? Get anything pierced? Any tattoos?"
"Well, no, nothing to that sort.. But, well, I've got myself a
girlfriend.."
Rimmy looked at him confused for a second before
laughing, "Wow, you had me going there for a few seconds Ben!"
"No, I'm serious Rimmy. Her name's Willow.."
"Oh my gawd! Wow! I mean, well, I never would have
guessed! And you of all people.."
"Why is it so shocking about me getting a girlfriend?!"
Ben said suddenly, EVERYONE seemed to make that comment about him.
"No, it's not that you CAN'T get the chicks, 'cuz well hell,
we all know you can. But it's just you, like you settling down with one person. It's like
our master betrayed us," Rimmy laughed, "I'm just kidding with you Benny! I'm happy for
you, I really am! So is she here?" Rimmy looked around.
Ben shook his head, "No, she's home right now.. Her
home.."
Rimmy looked at him confused, "And where would that
be?"
"Canada.."
"Canada!? Whoa, I didn't know you guys went to
Canada,"
"Oh, we didn't. I met her in America,"
"So Canada huh? Wow.. So, uh, how do you guys
like.."
"Well as of right now, she's just finishing getting her
degree, and I've still got to do more touring, Japan, we're leaving in a day or so. We've
really got to wait until everything settles down. I think I'm going to try to get her to tour
with us.."
"Well that's good. So what's she like? She must be
amazing, seeing she's been able to get you all to herself.."
"She IS amazing Rimmy. She's just, great, wonderful..
She's a really sweet girl.. You'd probably get along with her."
"Girl? She is legal right?"
Ben laughed and patted Rimmy on the shoulder, "Of
course Rims, she's 20. I'm going to talk to Karl.."
Rimmy nodded and said she'd see him later. She looked
over at Karl, he was currently sporting two females, one on each side, the three were
just chatting away.
Karl laid on Ben's couch laughing.
Ben looked up from his seat to Karl, "Karl, in ain't that
funny.."
Both guys stopped and looked back at the infomercial for
car wax. Karl started laughing again.
Ben looked at his clock, "Hey, what time is it in
Canada?"
Karl shrugged and turned the tv up a bit.
"It'd be around noon or something I think.." Ben walked
over to his phone and called Willow up.
Her machine came on after a few rings, Ben sighed, yet
left a message anyway, telling Willow to give him a call whenever she could.
"Karl," Ben called into the living room, "Karl!!" he yelled
again as he walked over to the couch as Karl lifted his head groggily.
Ben laughed, "Oh, sorry! And I was wondering why you
weren't answering. I was going to tell you I'm heading in for the night. Want to turn that
crap down or something?"
When Willow had came in after being at the campus all
day trying to get as much done as possible. She was so close to that diploma now. In a
matter of days she'd have her degree. All she had to do was finish a few more classes
and finalize her essay.
When Willow had heard Ben's message she nearly
groaned, she didn't want to call. Well she DID, she did want to talk to him. She was just
scared of what he wanted. And she knew that as soon as she heard his voice again
she'd want to leave and be with him. She was quite proud of herself, she had diverted
her attention off of him for almost the whole day.
Willow finally leaned over and picked up the receiver.
She looked at the number that was scrawled out on the worn piece of paper. After
taking a deep breath, she punched in the numerous numbers and finally got a ring. By
the third ring, the phone was answered.
v
"Hullo?" She heard Ben mumbled.
"Oh, sorry, did I wake you Ben?"
She heard him crack a smile, "Not everyone is a night
hawk like yourself Cindy.. What'd you want?"
It was as if a knife had stabbed her. Her breath seemed
to be literally knocked out of her, and she couldn't speak. Her eyes glassed over, and
she was hit with goose bumps. Before the receiver actually fell out of her hand she
hung it up quickly.
Ben stared at the phone in confusion as the dial tone
hummed through his room. He sat up and turned his nearby lamp on. Looking over at
the bright light over to his side, he saw it read clearly to be 4:05am, "Who in the world
would be calling at this time?"
He finally clicked the phone off and set it down as he
continued to sit up with a look of confusion over him.
After a mere few minutes it struck him, and it struck him
hard, "Shit! Willow!"
He quickly jumped out of his bed, "Oh gawd!" He put his
hands up to his mouth, "Oh, she got the wrong idea. So, so, sooo the wrong idea. Oh
my.. Oh gawd! Oh gawd, oh gawd, oh gawd.." He quickly went into his living room and
worked around Karl. He started digging for her number, "Oh come on, where are
you?!"
He finally found the number, "Bingo!" Picking up his
phone he dialled it and stood there impatiently waiting for the ringing to stop.
After the tenth ring he hung up and tried again.
Once again, with no luck, he hung up, "Hell, she has
ident-a-call doesn't she.." He looked around, looking for something to help, "Ooh, her
friend!"
After some more rummaging through papers he came
across the number Willow had gave him.
On the forth ring a machine picked up.
Ben cursed loudly, "Of corse you couldn't be home today.
Damn, I hate machines.." He tapped his foot waiting for the beep.
When he heard it he realized he didn't know what the hell
to say. "Um, hi, uh, Dawn this is, um, Ben.. Ben Carey, Savage Garden the whole
thing. Uh, if-if you're there, I REALLY need you to pick up. It's about Willow.
Something happened, something wrong, she got the wrong idea, and know she's
ignoring my calls.. Please if you're there pick up.. I'm hoping you could talk to her, uh,
relay a message for me or something.. It's urgent.. Um, give me a call as soon as you
can. Call collect, please.. Oh, my number..." Ben left his number and repeated again
that it was urgent.
Willow sat on her couch rocking herself back and forth for
a bit before reaching for the phone. After looking at another paper, she dialled another
number.
Daniel entangled himself from a pair of arms and reached
for his phone. He yawned, "Mmm..hello?"
"Hi Dan. I'm really sorry about the time.."
He quickly sat up, "Willow what's wrong?"
"Who's Cindy?"
"Huh, wha.. Ci-Cindy? Willow, what is wrong?"
"Cindy, Ben knows her. Who is she?"
"Cin.. Oh, Cindy! Yes, yes, ok I know who you're talking
about.."
"Who is she?" Willow asked yet again.
"Oh, she's a sweet one, young, pretty.."
"I don't need to hear this Dan.. Who is she?"
Daniel was quite a bit confused by this time, "Um, she
was a friend of Ben and Karl's before they became a part of the band.. She's a friend of
the band now.. Will, why?"
"Are her and Ben.." Willow took a deep breath, "Are her
and Ben a..thing?"
"What?! No! Will of corse not! You know how much you
mean to him. You're his 'thing'. Cindy's like a sister to him. Apparently she lived across
the street from him while he was growing up, they're old friends. Oh Willow.."
"Are you positive?"
"Of corse! You are everything to him.."
After finally convincing Willow that Cindy was nothing to
Ben but a good friend, Dan rang Ben up.
Ben nearly dove for the phone, "Willow?!"
"No, but oh so close.."
He studied the voice for a second, "Daniel, what do you
want? I'm busy!"
"Bu..busy?! Cindy IS there?!"
"No! What are you talking about!?"
"Well you've gotten Willow quite upset.."
"I know!" Ben then gasped, "How do you know!? You
were talking to her?!"
"Yeah, she called.. Wanted to know who Cindy was..
What in the hell did you say to her?!"
"Nothing! I just assumed it was Cindy.."
"Ok, but what exactly was said?"
Ben sighed, "Not much.. I answered the phone, she
heard I was tired and asked if she woke me, I said not everyone one was a night hawk
like herself, or Cindy I should say, and then I asked what she wanted. That was it.. She
hung up after that.. So, wha..what does she think then?"
"She thought Cindy was your 'significant other'. You've
really got to more careful with your words Ben.."
"I was! A bunch of me and the old gang went out tonight
and Cin usually calls me when she gets home again to tell me she's fine and safe. Well
she didn't call tonight, so when Willow called I automatically figured Cindy, even before I
picked the phone up. Then I had a female voice..I was tired.. How mad..or upset is
she?"
"Quite. Mainly the first thing she asked was who Cindy
was.. Then when I kind of gave her broken answers, I was quite confused and tired,
she kept saying 'Who is Cindy?' Why in the world didn't you call her back?!"
"I did call her back! What, you think I WOULDN'T!? I
tried twice, she never answered. My guess is caller identification.."
"Well just try again Ben.. It would be a terrible waste to
just let her slip through your fingers like that.."
"Like I DON'T know that already.."
After another few unsuccessful tried, Ben called Daniel
back.
"Didn't work huh?" Dan replied as he picked up his
phone.
"No.." Ben groaned, "This isn't going to work.. Wait a
sec! Lets do a three-way!"
Daniel started laughing, "That did NOT sound good.."
It wasn't until Dan stopped laughing that Ben had realized
what he had said, "Oh shut up Daniel! Lord, grow up! And I'M supposed to be the
immature one.."
"Well come on.. Look at the time.. Of corse my mind is
going to be racing into the gutter! So, how is this," Daniel chuckled again, "This
three-way going to work?"
"Grow up already! We keep our connection open and you
call Willow. She'll see it's just you and answer.."
"Yes, and then when she finds out you're also on the line
she'll hang up.."
"Yes, that's IF she finds out I'm on the other line!"
"You want me to lie to her!?"
"No! No, I just don't want you to tell her I'm
listening.."
"Ok, but what good is that going to do? You're going to
have to make yourself heard, it's the only way you'll be able to talk to her.."
"I don't know, I don't know.. She clearly doesn't want to
talk to me..but I need to talk to her.."
