PLOT: A theater-hating drama critic (Steven Hovis) must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and bumbling local police, as he debates whether to go through with his marriage.
HISTORY: In early 2008, I was invited into a Corning Elks production of this show. I was asked to play Jonathan Brewster, a homicidal villain (and brother of the main character) originally played on-stage by Boris Karloff. However, the director's health (and other reasons) led to a delay in the (already previously delayed) performance dates, pushing them from July to October. Because of this, I spent that Summer performing in my first-ever KLP show, "Oklahoma!"
It was during those KLP rehearsals that I landed the role of Che in ELT's October show, "Evita". With rehearsals for the Elks show still yet to take place, I removed myself from "Arsenic" in late June, giving the Elks (who hadn't officially begun rehearsals yet) plenty of time to find another Jonathan.
Five months after the Elks performed their version of "Arsenic...", I answered an email, sent to various KLP members, seeking people for a Spring 2009 production in Hammondsport. I read successfully for Jonathan, thus being able to play the one role that I couldn't find time to do last year.
Playing brother Teddy in this version is longtime co-star Gary Yoggy, who also played Teddy in the Elks version, and assists my "Ten Little Indians" co-star John Rogerson in directing. Also cast alongside Gary and I were our "Bells are Ringing" and "Beauty and the Beast" co-stars, Tom Primerano and Kathy Gill, as well as several people that I'd appeared with in KLP shows the previous year.
