You're walking. And you don't always realize it,
but you're always falling.
With each step you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over, you're falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling
at the same time.
A short Biography of Laurie Anderson
(b. Laura Phillips Anderson, 5 June 1950, Chicago, Illinois, USA.)
Laurie started out as a sculptor in New York's avant garde art
scene but decided she liked performing more. She premiered at
Brooklyn's Academy of Music in 1973 with "The Life
And Times Of Josef Stalin", a 12-hour epic containing the
audio-visual elements Laurie would later use in her work. Her
debut album, "Big Science", includes the eight-minute
vocoder-laden "O Superman," which had become an
underground hit in Europe in 1981 and subsequently hit number 2
on the British charts when she signed with Warner Brothers.
The song's looped, repeated pattern combined with the part-spoken
intonation of Laurie's voice creates an hypnotic effect. Her next
endeavor was "Mr. Heartbreak", which is probably
her most popular release. It features contributions from Peter
Gabriel and writer William S. Burroughs. Her next release, in
1984, was a five-album set called "United States".
"Home
Of The Brave", released in 1986, resumed the less radical
path of her second album. In 1989 she released "Strange
Angels", another whimsical and off-the-wall collection of
songs. Her
most recent album is from 1994, "Bright Red". Currently
she is touring as a one-woman band with her assortment of
electronic devices and instruments. I highly reccomend catching
her
show if she happens to come to your area.
