Chapter 17
Annie walked down the stairs and heard someone rummaging around. She
walked to the doorway of the kitchen and saw A.J. looking through the
cabinets.
"What are you doing?" she asked and walked further in.
A.J. looked up at her, "I'm trying to find a frying pan. Why is it so hard to
find anything in this kitchen?" he asked.
~Annie's view~
I grabbed a banana from the basket on top of the microwave and pushed A.J.
out of the way. I picked up the frying pan and handed it to him, "There."
"I knew it was there, I just wanted to see if you knew," he said getting the
carton of eggs from the fridge.
"Uh huh, sure you did."
"I did!"
"OK, I believe you," I said then threw the peel away and sat at the table.
The newspaper was scattered all over the table, "You know, A.J. I would
really appreciate it if you didn't mess up the newspaper. I can't stand that!"
"Sorry, but what section are you looking for?" he asked, unwrapping a few
slices of cheese and mixing it in with eggs.
"Sports."
"Sports?" he asked, skeptical of me.
"Yes, why is that so unbelievable?"
"Nothing, you just don't strike me as the type who likes sports."
"Well, why would I?"
"I don't know. You just seem...."
"Seem what?"
"Um, nothing...I'll only end up saying something that'll get me in trouble
and I know you take karate, so I won't take any chances," he laughed and
poured the eggs into the pan.
I smiled, "Smart move," I said then started to look through what was left of
the paper. I finally found the Sports section and started to read it. A.J.
started to hum along with the radio, it was playing I Knew I Loved You by
Savage Garden. I reached over and turned it up, since it was my favorite song
and before long, I started to sing along too.
"There's just no rhyme or reason, only this sense of completion, and in your
eyes, I see the missing pieces, I'm searching for, I think I've found my best
friend, I know that it might sound more than a little crazy, but I
believe......I knew I loved you before I met you, I think I dreamed you into
life, I knew I loved you before I met you, I think I dreamed you into life,
II knew I loved you-" I was stopped by the radio cutting off, I looked up and
saw A.J., "Why'd you do that?"
"Ann, do me a favor?"
"What?"
"Never sing again," he laughed.
"Oh shut up! You act like you're a superst-.....nevermind."
"What? I act like I'm a superstar?"
"I was gonna say that, but I remembered you are!" I laughed.
"Are you gonna tell me?" he asked, changing the subject.
"Tell you what?"
"What you wanted to ask me last night?"
"No, I changed my mind. I'm not ready to ask you just yet, but I
will.....soon," I said and glanced at the clock, "Oh man, it's already 10:15
and I was supposed to be studying already! I gotta go," I said then got up
and went back up to my room, I stopped when I heard someone call me. I
figured it was from Lina's room and popped my head in, "What?"
"Is A.J. still here?" she asked.
I laughed, "Yep."
"Why can't you just tell him to leave for me?" she whined.
"Because I don't care if he leaves or not. If you want him to leave that bad,
you ask him yourself."
"But I don't wanna!! It's too embarrassing, I mean he blew me off!"
"Well, you're gonna have to get used to seeing him since I'm dating Brian! So
you're going to have to talk to him sooner or later."
"Ugh! You're not my friend," she pouted.
"Fine with me, I was getting tired of you living here, anyway," I said with a
straight face and Lina threw a pillow at me as I closed the door.
I walked in my room and closed the door. I took out my laptop and rebooted
it, I placed my folder and textbooks on the side of it. I saw the bottle of
pills at the bottom of my drawer. I had two, it was just an extra one I had
and put it at the bottom of my drawer, I think Brian still had the first
bottle. I took the bottle and was about to open it when the phone rang, I
picked it up, "Hello?"
"Hey."
"Oh hi Brian, what's up?"
"Nothing, just wondering how you are.....I want to see you so bad."
"I know, but it's only two weeks, I need to study."
"Are you.....still taking the pills?"
I looked down at the bottle in my hand and smiled, "Nah, I don't need to
anymore," I said and threw them back in my drawer.
"That's good, so what's going on over there?"
"Nothing really great. A.J.'s over here."
"A.J.'s over there?" he asked and I could hear the worry in his voice.
"Yeah, A.J.'s over here, he won't leave unless Lina talks to him and she's
avoiding him like the plague," I laughed.
He laughed too, "Oh, ok. Just checking. I don't want anybody making a move on
my girl."
"Don't worry, I wouldn't leave you for that tattoo freak, but I have to go. I
was planning on getting some studying don before this day is over."
"Over? it just started, I mean it's only 10:30."
"Yeah, but I still have to go, I have to pick up a test booklet from the
college at 2, so I figured I could get a little studying in before then."
"OK, but expect another call from me, tonight."
"I'll be looking forward to it, bye sweetie."
"Bye, hun," he said then we both hung up.
I sighed and laid back on my bed, "I wish I could tell somebody," I said to
myself and examined the top of my canopy bed. And closed my eyes as the phone
rang, I pushed the on button and brought the phone up to ear, "What?" I said
and heard nothing, "Hello? Anybody there?" I asked and was about to hang up
when I heard a song start to play on the other end.
I've been a bad bad girl
I've been careless with a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
The music stopped and a voice picked up, "You've been a very bad girl," a
deep voice said, but strangely enough it was soothing.
"W-what?" I stuttered.
