In their cover story for the December/ January issue, P.O.V. magazine ranked the top 75 cities in the country for economic opportunity and social climate. Buffalo ranked 74, beating only California's raisin capitol. Their description of the Queen City?
"Industrial town long past its prime; stiff breeze off Lake Erie makes for numbing six-month winters; crushed by New York State taxes. At least they've got wings."
Not exactly an accolade, but at least we made the list.
P.O.V. ranked cities by Coolness, Quality of Life, Educated Workforce, Taxes, Infrastructure, Success Ratio, and Job Growth. If these criteria seem somewhat subjective, they based each on government statistics and their own research, including a city's reputation and interviews with locals.
The top city? Ausitn, Texas. It seems their climate, business community, and proximity to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio put them over the top. The rest of the top five were Orlando, Fla., Salt Lake City, Utah, Charleston, N.C., and Las Vegas, Nevada. The rest of the list can be found in this month's issue.
Online Buffalo contacted the Mayor's office, but he did not return our phone calls.
