Andy Summers (and that other fellow, sorry, but I've forgotten his name) played in Salt Lake City last night. It was a terrific show, made even better by the fact that I got in for $3. They each played an accoustic guitar, seemingly trading off lead throughout each song. I have never seen such a skilled display of accoustic guitar music. It was a wide variety of richly textured sound from ambient to folk to jazz to blues. I have never been much of an Andy fan, but I was very impressed last night.
Andy joked with the small audience about being in Salt Lake before under different conditions. He also talked about his home in LA being hit by the earthquake and looking for a different place to live.
Then there was a surprise. They played an instrumental of "Message in a Bottle". It definitely wasn't a Sting style slow-pick, rather it was fast and almost sounded Spanish. Wish I had a recording, but I didn't try to sneak in my recorder last night since the club has been so thorough with frisking in the past. After it was over, Andy stated that it was a "gesture to the past, you know 'bye-bye'". He joked about "bathing in the sea of royalty" which must have been in reference to Sting.
Definitely a must-see if he comes to your town.
