The Metro Cafe - Washington, D.C., United States

by Krissy Oechslin on November 25, 1997

Wow. I am still glowing. What a show. I was so excited I could hardly drive home. Andy was awesome -- there is nothing else I can say. When he played Message in a Bottle I about died since that song is the reason I started playing guitar. Then after the show I got the setlist AND I got Andy to sign it and I got my picture with him! Hopefully I will put it up on my webpage before the end of the semester. Here's the setlist:

  1. World Gone Strange
  2. But She
  3. The Last Dance of Mr. X
  4. Afro Blue
  5. Strange Earth
  6. Monk [Hangs Ten]
  7. Lonely Woman
  8. Rumpelstilskin
  9. Blues For Snake
  10. Big Thing
  11. Murder [By Numbers]
  12. Message [In A Bottle]

and then at the bottom right hand corner it says:

  1. Footprints
  2. Somewhere - Miles West (???)

I don't know if any of these are abbreviations since I'm not familiar with most of his work. If I have anything wrong please let me know!

I can't wait to get my pictures developed so I can frame my picture, ticket stub, and signed setlist!

Some lucky bastard got Andy to sign his guitar. Guess who else had signed it? Stewart AND Sting! I bet he doesn't play that guitar very much!

How did those of you who were also there like the show?

Last night I made it into D.C and caught The Andy Summers Trio show at the Metro Cafe. Before the show I met many Andy Summers fans and had a wonderful time talking about Andy and his work. You all are some of the nicest and interesting people. It really made the waiting time fly by. (The show was very late starting).

The show sold very well and it was SRO with about 80 or more people in a very small place. I have never sat so close to the stage at any show, I would never give up the feeling and atmosphere of the small club, it is priceless! This will be on my mind for a very long time, the set-list has been about the same at every show, however there was no break between sets and they played continuiously for well over 90 minutes. When they left the stage they were applauded into doing a very lengthy encore which I would have considered to be a complete set in itself. The energy that poured off of the stage and electrifyed the atmosphere was phenomenal!

The audience roared into applause for Message in a Bottle and Murder by Numbers. From what I gather this is the case in every city, and they were just as thrilled with Andy's new song "The Last Dance of Mr.X". The Trio improvised throughout "Message" and "Murder by Numbers", the changes in"Message"really took me by surprize, it was so unexpected, but it went to show the talent and musicianship and tightness of the band to really pull it off. I'm sure that many Andy Summers and Police fans who came to the show left as Bernie Dresel and Jerry Watts fans as well.

After the show people stood in line for autographs (I have never done that before in my life), many had thier arms full of records, books, CD's, one guy even brought his guitar, all of which Andy tirelessly signed.

Okay, I just want to add my .02 on Andy last night. HE WAS AWESOME!!! I haven't followed his music very much but after last night, I think I will definitely go out and buy his CD (as he urged everyone to do)! The way he played with such ease was amazing. The clarity of the sound could not have been any better. I kept thinking how greatful I was to be able to see ANDY SUMMERS so up close! It is by far the best way to see an act as apposed to the large stadiums. The other two postings really described it well but I would also add this. Andy had a great sense of humor and really seemed to be enjoying himself. Someone yelled out something about Puff Daddy's remake and he made a face of discust and sarcastically said "hey at least I'll make a lot of money off it." Everyone laughed. Someone also brought up Sting's name and he jokingly said "who's that?" Anyway, if you get a chance to go see him, SEE HIM!
