Whew, back home again - P. Gabriel's music was very exciting, and lots of it! But now I'm focusing on my other projects and hoping he continues at the blistering pace we recorded the rhythm tracks at! (minus breaks for ping pong, of course) (and lunch and dinner breaks.) (and, of course, coffee breaks.) I'll try to keep tabs on the progress and post info about it.
I'm suffering ping pong withdrawal after leaving RealWorld - although when I dropped by a local company here for some mike cables (Markertek, of Saugerties NY) I found that they're ALL expert players there, and spend lunch breaks and after work competing. I was offered a match but wisely declined.
Engineer/producer Tchad Blake is here, and we're editing and compiling the tapes from my Cave project - it's sounding great, and very unusual. I think we'll finish this week, then it's up to me to kick PapaBear Records into action and get the cd out! I'll have the artwork done soon, since I'm doing my hand coloring of the photos as we listen down to the mixes -that way, hopefully, the music influences the art. I'm hoping for late Spring release. (my track record on releasing things on time isn't too good, though!) The group that recorded this project, Jerry Marotta, Steve Gorn and I, will play a concert or two at the NAMM show in Anaheim in January. (not in a cave, though.)
Also in January, it's likely I'll record with Andy Summers, in preparation for a tour this Summer as a trio with drummer Stuart Copeland. Interestingly, though I don't really play jazz, the current plan is to do Euro jazz festivals. Crimson will be writing together in May, and perhaps some live playing in October/Nov, so the Summer/Summers tour would fit in well for me. (As always with these plans, one is never too sure of a tour or album until it's being done, so I mention these 'plans' as likelihoods.)
We've added a Coffee Corner page for some of the espresso/related things that have been popping up a lot on this page. It's also got a RealAudio sample of one of the tracks from World Diary: "Espresso & the Bed of Nails" (naturally.) Come visit it if you've got any interest in the bean (or, if you need help designing a travelling espresso roadcase!)
Quicker than ever, the holiday season seems to be upon us, and I'd like to wish a happy and healthy season to Dan - my page designer, to Laurie - the one, invaluable employee of PapaBear Records, to Junichi and Keiko - who do our mirror site in Japan, and to you the readers of this page. It has been, and will continue to be a pleasure and honor for me to have you visit my site.
P.S. We've updated the Funk Finger Page, and hopefully there'll be more feedback on it from the 264 players who now use them.
Projects in the Pipeline.....
Paula Cole's album is out now, on the Warner Bros./Imago label. I hear its' getting played a lot on the radio.
Jesse Cook, a Toronto-based Flamenco guitarist, came down to Woodstock and we did a few tracks for his upcoming cd on the Narada label.
Barbara Kessler - Barbara is a singer from around Boston. Jerry Marotta produced her new cd here, at Applehead studios. It's very tasty, just out on Eastern Front Records, titled Notion.
Ellis Paul - Another Jerry Marotta production - getting to be a great connection for Boston area talent. This will be on Rounder Records.
Also.....
"I've been asked to do a photo exhibition next year, in Milan. I'll spend quite a bit of the Fall organizing and re-painting photos for that."
Recorded live in a local cave last year with Steve Gorn (Indian flutes) and Jerry Marotta (Taos drums). Haven't had time to mix yet but it will be a very special project, possibly on Papa Bear. Also filmed it. Hope to have it all out by Spring.
Equipment.....
Music Man basses. Love 'em. On a site with Ernie Ball strings.
Trace Elliot bass amps .They're part of the KAMAN site.
Ned Steinberger. I play Ned's new NS Electric Upright - this is his e-mail address.
Markertek is a local (Saugerties, NY) audio/visual equipment supplier where I get stuff for recording. They've got a very big mail order dept. and an interesting website.
The compressor I've been using was made by a local engineer who's finally gone into production making compressors and d.i.'s. The company is Retrospec, and they've got e-mail, or phone: 914-688-7329.
...and Tony's Picks.
Pete Levin My Bro. Cool info about The Clams, Viola jokes, and more (and he's got a great haircut.) RealWorld Peter Gabriel has his own section of the RealWorld site, which has some very neat stuff. Larry Fast/Synergy My old friend from many P.G. tours. Still cooking with Synergy. Livingston Taylor. An old buddy of mine. Paula Cole. My friend from P. Gabriel's tour. Woodstock Harley Very nice folks - that's where I bought my Heritage Softtail Dan Beach The man who turns my manic ideas into an organized website. Japanese mirror site [Image], graciously provided by Junichi & Keiko Iwawaki. (There are more links on the Papa Bear Records page.) - !
Like most interview cd's, aswell for thisone, hearing them twice and hey get boared. The UK interview cd for Mercury Falling is very difficult to get. A bit strange cause normally one can get these items for $20.00 almost everywere.
The artwork for this cd is in the line of the official promo cd for Mercury Falling, and the promo for "I was brought to my senses". The cd comes in a jewel case with a small text inlay. Here you'll find the questions and answers.

Hello Erwin,
As per your request for input for the next issue, how about this little bit of news: Stewart will be appearing soon as an extra on the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. During a charity auction Stewart bid on and won a 'walk on' part in the show for a friend of his from the UK. His friend is a big fan of the show, as is Stewart himself, so when they went to Paramount to film the walk-on Stewart was very excited to be on the set. Someone recognized him and invited him to be in the episode as well. He will probably be an alien Bajoran, one of the humanoids with the bumpy noses, and will likely only be in the background, so keep your eyes open for our favorite drummer. The episode should air early next year. Stewart and the gang at Kinetic wish all their Snarks, friends and fans a Happy Christmas.

Erwin Kempen: This is German radio.
Am American DJ has offered me to sell his platinum award for "Nothing like the Sun". I already have one , I'm more interested in Ten Summoners Tales or Mercury Falling.
The award is in a black frame, has a silver/platinum disc and cassette in it. Plus which is very important with these awards, RIAA certified.
It all looks like this:
------------------------ /------------\ | | | record | | | \------------/ cassette -------------------- strip -------------------- ------------------------On that strip you can read to whom it was presented and the official RIAA logo, record is for one million sales in the US. He asked me to take bids for the item. Bids can be made untill December 25 1996 midnight.
Stewart Copeland is on the cover on Goldmine's first issue in 1997 from January 3. There is an interview about his latest music score "The Leopard Son"
I already wrote about the other part of the French CD promo some time ago. The live double cd by The Police was released in France as a special volume one and two promo set.
Now I received the volume two version, again the cover is equal to the normal issue, but only two colours have been used, first one was blue and white, thisone is red and white. Inlay is equal to stock copy except for the info about the show ofcourse. This disc has the Atlanta "Omni" show on it.
Very strange and freaky these 2 discs from France, I received them from a collector and no dealer in France is able to get more copies.

Can you tell us something about one of the rarest UK Police promo's - the Synchronicity Gatefold 7" single, such as how many were issued and the current value of a mint copy ?
Erwin Kempen : Talking about hard to get singles, mostly you only get these kind of items offered once in a lifetime. Perhaps its better for those who do not know this item to discribe it first.
THE POLICE - SYNCHRONICITY II/ONCE UPON A DAYDREAM
UK A&M 153 promo in fold open sleeve
The outside cover of this single is equal to all the normal stock copy from England/rest of Europe. This one can be opened, inside there is release info about the single. Funny is that there was made a mistake by A&M cause the mention the B-side as "Once upon a dream".
........................
Also, as it is Xmas and "top ten" lists are all the rage, we would love to see your list of the top ten all time Police/Sting or Police and Sting promo releases.
Erwin Kempen : That is a difficult one, I will make a personal list, not a list of the top 10 rarest items but just my favourite promo items.
