Freaks FAQ

Its unique, its rare, its ..... I don't know, certainly its strange !

I've found a record with Stewart Copeland on it, shouldn't be that funny you may think, but this is a record that nobody knew anything about. Not in books or other people's collections I had ever heard of this record.

Stewart went to University of California in 1971, he left University in the summer of 1973. After that he entered Berkeley Uni for his final year.

That was the moment when he met Charles Hugo Nowak Ostman II, with whom he decided to record an album.

Tittle : At the Apex of High
Band name: Frolkhaven

What I received is a boot (yes a bootleg from a private pressing !!) of this album. Although, my supplier tels, this record has received certain collectable notoriety due to the precence of drummer Stewart Copeland, its pure aura of primitive graphics and sound make it more than worthwhile.

Mainly a basement studio duo effort created betwixt Charles Pegasus Pendergrass III (on guitars, bass, clarinet, vocals, electronic effects) and Stewart on drums, this has rightly been described as a fidelity masterpiece of lost-time spave transcedence.

tracks are :
Side one : Oracle of Delphi/Idiomatic Interlude/Cyclation
Side two : Zonation of Galactic cosmoidal entities/back up/quest/7th shakra

Hopefully Stewart can give us some comments on this!?

Hi Erwin,

Where did you heard this???.This info. was on net long time ago, near one year, after the Barcelona record fair.I find and I have during some minutes this album in my hands!!!.It's a hand-made album made for a trio of phsycodellia-jazz band .The drummer is Stewart Copeland who apeared in the picture sleeve in a small b&w picture from and a familiar photo album near to a swiming pool.

This album is considered a rare album for people of jazz-fussion collectors, not for the cop member.I hope to get a copie very soon, cause the man who sale this album is and speciallist of this kind of stuff .But now is near one year after my orther and nothing!!!.Price for jazz collectors is near 160-180 US dollars.

Due to mid October 1997 there has been a released planned with the following tittle:

Sting - Sting in Cinema (collection of film works songs)

Can't be that bad ! I'm not sure yet if it is a bootleg or an official release.

This is what I picked up last night from the x.mission list.

It may be well known that I try to collect all the 36 different covers for Synchronicity from USA on LP. The black and white cover is the rarest one to get, what about this !

THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT ONES

Cover one:
front covers (without the credits) top left pictures are from left to right.
A. Sting close up of his face with letters through his face
b. Sting lying down with needles in his body
c. 3 close ups of Sting with 2 photo's upside down

Cover two:
front covers (without the credits) top left pictures are from left to right.
A. Andy standing besides a naked woman, head in a cirle, picture is turned
B. Sting lying down with needles in his body
c. Close up of Stewart upside down
d. close up of Sting holding Jungs book
e. extreme close up of Sting's face.

I hope for my wallet that there aren't 36 different black and white ones !

Last month this tittle was released on Voiceprint :

Anthony Moore - "Out" on Voiceprint VP165CD

This album was recorded the first half of 1977 but never released untill now ofcourse ! Curious thing is that it is again something by Voiceprint, hopefully they have more with obscure material lying around.

On this CD you can find Andy Summers just before he became a member of The Police.

If you would like a copy than sent an e-mail to Key Mail Order sales@keymailorder.co.uk price is 10 UK pounds. You can also buy from them the Dantalions Chariot CD with Andy aswell for 13 pounds.

The above album isn't that bad !

Don't think this has been mentioned yet...In the current issue of ICE magazine, under the Jazz News and Notes section they say, "Sting croons 'It Ain't Necessarily So' and Chaka Khan sings 'Summertime' on saxophonist Joe Henderson's 'Porgy and Bess' album, due October 7th on Verve."

Unfortunately, we think Mad About You didn't get the remix treatment on official release. There were however, two American promo CD singles released that did include remixes of the song. According to Joerg's superb catalogue "Truth Hits Everybody" these included the LP version, the "Original Remix", the "Remix Edit", the "12" Remix", and the "More Drums Mix". We haven't got the track times but we dare say Joerg or Erwin can help (a Freaks article ?). There is also a 6.16 remix of the song on the "Living Sea Soundtrack" which sounds like it has spanish guitar on it. Of course there may be more.

There is an instrumental mix of the song during the end credits of the "Ten Summoners Travels" video which is very good. We have on tape a copy of a remix which may be the "More Drums Mix" which might be the version you heard (although there's no gregorian chanting on it, it's much more bass heavy and -naturally- heavily features the drums) . Whichever version it is, it's very good, and very different (far superior to the album/single version IOHO) and is much more in the Soul Cages 'mood' than the version that was actually included.

There are obviously a lot of different remixes for "Mad About You" and "Why Should I Cry For You?", most of which only seemed to get released on promotional copies. It sounds like the remixes might have been done with Sting taking an interest, rather than the A&G club remixes of Let Your Soul and the Sister Moon remixes. Why don't A&M do us all a favour and release a mini-album of these remixes which are (IOHO of course) of infinitely more interest than yet another greatest hits collection ?

If Erwin gets the time, we'd like to read more about the "Soul Cages" era remixes including how many there are etc...in a future Freaks...

Here are the ones which have been released, obvious the one in the video has never been released that way. Hopefully this list will help

Do you know any information about this album listing from CDNOW. I ordered it, but it is on back order. I called them, but they have no other info.

Sting
Love Is Stronger Than Justice

CHANNEL 4 TELEVISIOM M031553

The last line is usually the one that would have the label and number.

Erwin Kempen: This is certainly not an official tittle, the problem with companies like CDnow is that their catalog is too big and almost every information comes in their catolog (so also the incorrect !).

My opion to this video is that it will be a rerelease of Summoners Travels, but Love is stronger than justice isn't even on video !!!

Do you know anything about Andy Summers' and his working relationship with Mike Oldfield? When did they perform 'Tubular Bell' in Newcastle? I have tried to seach the 'net, but I have found too much info. Thanks.

Erwin Kempen : Late 1974 Andy joined Mike Oldfield's orchestra to do a UK tour for Tubular Bells. I never found out when he was in Newcastle, the tour was only for a couple of weeks.

Andy is not mentioned on the live album of "Tubular Bells", but this album was recorded during these few weeks. Shouldn't be to difficult to find this on CD these days.

FREAKS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
---------------------------------

1. What is Freaks ?

Freaks is nothing more than a newsletter writen by me about Police or Sting related material. Mostly about records and cd's but sometimes about rare tapes which are available among traders.

As a collector people always asked me a lot of questions about certain things they had bought, e-mail gives me a change to inform everybody who is interested in The Police or Sting.

2. When can I expect the new issue ?

Freaks will be issued every first Sunday of the month.

3. Are there any back issue's available ?

Freaks back issue's are available on floppy disc, price is $5.00, you get every edition that has been issued. Mail me if you are interested in a floppy.

4. Is it possible NOT to get the for sale lists ?

Freaks and my for sale lists are brother and sister to each other. I buy and sell Police and Sting items a lot. That gives me the change to buy rare items, which I can write about, and that makes the circle complete.

5. Can I write for Freaks ?

Feel free to write something about your own Police or Sting collection. Or tell us something about any new items you just received.

6. Is Freaks about The Police and Sting only ?

No, that is not the intention of it. Solo project of Stewart and Andy are well written over the last few months. Why ?, that is easy cause they are (or were) a lot more productive than Sting.
