Deer Creek Music Center Amphitheater - Noblesville, (Indianapolis), Indiana, United States

by Christian Zombie Vampyres on August 26, 1991

Last night I went to the Sting show here in Indy at the Deer Creek music center (just like Poplar Creek in Chicago).

The Special Beat opened for Stingface and, in my opinion, put him to shame. Special Beat played lots of old favorites from both the Specials and the English Beat, but leaned a little more to the English Beat side. Rankin Roger was quite the best. Love him.

Sting's set was long and drawn out. He gave special treatment to EVERY song, which is OK but after the 6th or 7th minute of each song I was ready to choke him...

Sting's guitarist was very, ummm, practiced but a little to rigid and just plain corny...the drummer, of course needs to take Jammin 101 again...however the keyboardist could really play, and if not for the skill of this fearless pianists, this concert would be lost, because well, Sting was just plain old Sting which is not, in my estimation, enough to carry a 2 1/2 hour show...

In fact the best moment of the show was at the end when Special Beat came onstage to join Sting in singing "Message in a Bottle." Even my Sting worshiping girlfriend said Rankin Roger MADE the song...

Oh yea, there was a third act, in between. The guy's name was Vinx I believe, and I thought he blew. Sure he had a nice strong, accurate voice but so do a thousand other high school choir singers. Neither his voice or his lyrics (he sang alone, no band, just bongos which he played well) were unique enough to really stand out. In fact the lyrics sucked..."if you were a flower in a field I'd pick you, if you were a star in the sky I'd pick you.." yuck.

Anyway, this tour is worth catching if you like the Specials or the English Beat... Special Beat were right on last night they sounded great....too bad none of the oldsters (this was a middle aged-Sting-groupy show) knew enough of the songs to get up and move at all...
