Type O Negative's diverse yet compatible personalities make the Brooklyn boys as compelling and entertaining onstage as off.
Peter Steele, looks like a not-so-distant relative of the Addams Family, (his nickname in Brooklyn was Lurch). But it's the bassist/singer's voice that really puts him in the company of the "creepy and spooky." "Peter has a seriously deep voice, but it's not electronically altered," says Kenny. "Sometimes it's a little hard to reproduce live because the band plays so loud." He is 6 feet 6 inches tall and wears a size 15 boots. If you've seen the Playgirl issue you know that he is extremely large everywhere! :) He is the embodiment of the image I've always had of the perfect Vampire. On the Bloody Kisses Digi-pak he did a song from the point of view of a Vampire, Suspended in Dusk, it is his favorite cut off of BK. Not to be overlooked in the shadow of Steele's 6 foot 6 inch frame is the humor and sarcasm often present in his lyrics and conversation. "We're four dicks and that's the way we want to be. We don't hang out, we don't party. We're completely uncool."
October Rust marks drummer Johnny Kelly's recording debut with the band, although he joined in 1993, just following the release of Bloody Kisses. The versatile, hard-hitting drummer gelled within the band instantly, proving a valuable asset on tour with his great playing and good humor.
Guitarist Kenny Hickey, a founding member of TON, has an aggressive playing style and almost intimidating personality that perfectly suits the band's varied textures and appeal. "My gear changes a lot because it blows up every month," he told Guitar School magazine. "There are so many elements in our music we can't really be tagged. Whatever it takes to get the right mood out of the album is how I see it," he says of the band's decided allure.
Josh Silver, his hair flying as he pounds the keyboards onstage, is quite a different character offstage. Emphasis on character. A self-proclaimed "paranoid schizophrenic hermit," look for a cloud of cigarette smoke and coffee cup and you'll find the amusingly self-deprecating Silver, as prolific a producer as he is player.
When I write songs, I know that I'm influenced by goth, metal, industrial, psychadelia and alternative. I draw my influences from many different areas. If I had to call the band something, I guess I'd call it "gothadelic." - Peter Steele
