  • "Thinking About You" was released between "Saving" and "How Will I Know" but it didn't enter the pop charts, only promoted to the R&B market, peaking at #10 on the Hot 100 R&B Singles Charts
  • Whitney Houston held the record of biggest selling debut album (12 million copies) in the US until Alanis Morrissette beat that record with her "Jagged Little Pill" in 1996.
  • Whitney Houston's second album "Whitney" was the first female singer to debut at #1 on the albums charts. That album went on to sell 9 million copies in the US.
  • "I'm Your Baby Tonight", Whitney's third album, has sold 4 million copies in the US.
  • "The Bodyguard" was selling a million copies a week when it first came out and was certified 6 million sold after 2 months!

  • "I Will Always Love You", the leadoff single from "Bodyguard" has sold 4,600,000 copies in the US and over 1,700,000 copies in the UK.
  • Worldwide sales of "I Will Always Love You" have hit over 8 million, making it one of the biggest sellers of all time.
  • Whitney Houston holds the record for the longest solo #1 single with "I Will Always Love You" spending 14 weeks on top!
It is only second to the 16 week #1 hit "One Sweet Day", a collaboration between Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey
  • Whitney Houston holds the joint record for the longest #1 R&B single with "I Will Always Love You" spending 11 weeks at #1!
  • Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" is one of the longest #1 airplay singles that didn't make it to #1. It spent 6 weeks at #1!
  • Whitney Houston's "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" was the third single ever to debut at #1 on the Hot 100, after Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" and Mariah Carey's "Fantasy". Whitney also debuted at #1 on the Dance Maxi-Singles Sales charts, the R&B charts and the Hot 100 Singles Sales charts!
  • "Exhale" spent 11 weeks at #2 after its #1 debut making it the longest running #2 single. It sold well over a million copies.
  • Also, in Korea, "Exhale" and "Count On Me" were released as singles, selling reasonably well even as singles don't usually get released in Korea in the first place.
  • "Waiting To Exhale", the soundtrack, has reached the 8 million mark, making it one of the most successful soundtracks ever.

    Miscellaneous

  • Whitney's two singles, "We Didn't Know" and "I Belong To You" were promoted only to R&B radio as well as "Thinking About You" from "Whitney Houston".
  • Whitney's "Queen of the Night" and "Something In Common" were major players in the Hot 100 Airplay chart, unfortunately, not released as a single.
  • The "Bodyguard" was so successful that the singles released made it so high in the airplay charts but never really sold as much because the album was so good with the exception of "I Will Always Love You". So they didn't bother releasing "Queen of the Night" on single!
  • Whitney wasn't supposed to sing "I Will Always Love You" for the "Bodyguard". They had decided on Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". Luckily, Paul Young did a cover of that in the soundtrack for "Fried Green Tomatoes" so they decided on Dolly Parton's #53 hit "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" from 1982!
  • "I Will Always Love You" is the #2 hit in remakes after Chubby Checker's "The Twist" which had two top 40 chart runs, 15 weeks and 18 weeks. The first time it spent #1 was for a week and the next time it was #1 for 2 weeks. It went gold both times. Remember gold certifications were more back then, 1 million copies for a gold certificate.
  • Whitney only has one duet that made the top forty, the #8 hit "Count On Me". All her other duets either went unreleased or charted really low.
  • "Step By Step" was originally recorded on Annie Lennox's "Diva" single "Precious" as a B-side. Annie thought it would work better if Whitney did it so Annie changed a few words and made it fit in with the "Preacher's Wife" album, giving it a more gospel feel. It is also available on some of the Japanese imports of the "Diva" album.
  • "I'm Every Woman" was a song Chaka Khan didn't want any one to record, but she decided she would let Whitney do a remake of it since Whitney was every woman. It was later used as the theme song for "The Oprah Winfrey show".
  • "Star Spangled Banner" is one of the lowest charting singles that went gold. It was #20 on the Hot 100 since it didn't get any airplay. It peaked at #3 on the sales charts.
  • "The Preacher's Wife" is her only album not to hit #1 and not to spawn a #1 debut single.
