Covered by Splinters

a tribute to the music of Paul Weller

In late 1997 an idea was born by members of SPLINTERS, the mailing list devoted to Paul Weller, The Style Council, and, of course, The Jam. Why shouldn't Weller fans, musically talented or not, cover some of their favourite Weller songs? During 1998 contributions were recorded. The original "Covered by Splinters" tape was then compiled by Nacho Dimari during September and October 1998 in Buenos Aires. He wrote on the cover: "Many thanks to all the Splinters (involved or not with this project) and, of course, to Mr. Paul Weller. This project was done thanks to the effort of artists from USA, New Zealand, England, Canada, and Argentina. Nacho Dimari, Buenos Aires, 29.10.98".

The tape was widely distributed among the Weller fans and a follow up titeled "Covered by Splinters 2" emerged in 2002. You might also like to visit Alan Wyatt's page with all the information about this project.

And guess what, "Covered by Splinter 3" is meanwhile in the making.

The Artists The liner notes
Ian Baker - Above the Clouds

Just one take, me and the guitar ... but it sounds alright. I recorded it on my 4 track studio.

Unfortunately, there's no pic available! Brett Crowther - As You Lean into the Night

Since I have only an acoustic guitar I wanted to do an acoustic Weller song ... I like my voice the best on this one ... and what a voice! Ha Ha! I used a cheap microphone.

Keith Lewington - Friday Street & You Do Something to Me

I’ve done all the instruments and vocals. Recorded entirely on an Apple Macintosh.

Unfortunately, there's no pic available! Phil Yoxall - Has My Fire Really Gone Out?

The band name: Kearton Risin’. We are: Pete Kearton (guitars, keys & drums); Craig Forrester (vocals) & me bass ... which is the only song I can play.

Lou Hallwas - (When You) Call Me & Porcelain Gods

When You ... is one of my Weller faves, it’s simple & moving. Porcelain I recorded at 3am in the morning, I couldn’t sleep.

Jo-Ann Macklin - Wild Wood & The Whole Point of No Return

Wild Wood is recorded with my brother, Rob, and Liam and Joel, his sons. The Whole Point ... it’s just me playing piano. An Instrumental.

Hywel Griffiths - It Just Came to Pieces in My Hands

A favorite of mine. Recorded it using my Yamaha Image Custom, going to a Marshall amp.

Evan Peta - Life at a Top Peoples Health Farm

The original backing track was erased and re-recorded. A big chaos.

Greg Matecko and the Teekbeats - I Got by in Time

I chose it because of the second verse ... I’ve had that experience a few times ... Mike Kolesar plays the drums, Mike Silay the bass, and I play guitars, percussion and lead vocals.

Nacho Dimari - Liza Radley

First song I remember of PW, along with Tales & Absolute Beginners. But it’s the only one I manage to play on the piano.

Unfortunately, there's no pic available! The CornMods - When You're Young

There are no liner notes available. The Corn Mods are (were?) Dan Mueller and Andrew Kapusta.
