BEST 100 SINGERS OF ALL TIME
October 1998
- LIAM GALLAGHER - 93
- "When his voice arrived on the scene, it was like a breath of fresh air." [John Power, Cast]
- "As soon as it's time to shine, I'm in there," said an ever-reticent Liam in 1997. He fixated on the microphone having surmised that The Stone Roses' Ian Brown was the coolest human on earth - but whereas most Brown disciples cooed, Liam discovered that he could dispense his vocals with a mewling brio that owed as much to Lennon and Lydon. "Cigarettes & Alcohol" is the touchstone of his howling-into-the-void phase; by the time of "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" he had started to add knowing restraint to his approach. "Be Here Now", despite lacklustre material, shows Liam cautiously embracing the light and shade of vocal maturity.
- Born: Septmber 21, 1972
- Sublime moment: All of "Champagne Supernova" - from hushed verse, through star-gazing chorus, to the divine middle eight.
- Recommended: "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" (Creation, 1995)
