50 BEST ALBUMS OF 1998

- THE MASTERPLAN
- Cynical theories abounded (were Creation desperate for cash?) and Noel Gallagher seemed initially loath to endorse it, but by November it was clear that what 1998 really needed was an Oasis album, even if it was a compilation of B-sides. "Acquiesce", "The Masterplan" and "Rocking Chair" were A-sides manque ("We don't write B-sides; we just write songs"), and the bulk posted a welcome reminder that Liam's voice remains the most potent pipes in pop. Bult on effortless songwriting, basted in charisma, more enjoyable than "Be Here Now", actually.
- In a word: Rock'n'roll.
