Introduction

One of the most well-known Nirvana pages on the Internet for quite a while is The Happening.  This is not only a Nirvana page, but it does provide information that is worth your visit.  The Happening has grown into a good site.  This is also a Pixies and a Weezer page, but for the most part it is focused on Nirvana.

Download Test

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the browser stopped downloading.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • Time shown in minute/second format.

  • Read the Disclaimer for more information.

Browser Time
Internet Explorer 5.0 0:27
Neoplanet 2.1 1:21
Netscape 4.05 0:44
Opera 3.15 1:24

I'm not sure exactly why Opera and Neoplanet performed the way they did as compared to IE and Netscape.  I can only guess that this is a "big browser" page.  IE and Netscape actually have similar download times, however IE was the browser I used when I first visited the page, thus the time was decreased with each visit.

Disclaimer: The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 42k bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Graphics

  • Velocity 4400 18MB used.

  • IBM C50 used at 32-bit color and 1024x768 pixels.

The overall layout on this page is very simple, organized, and up-to-date.  It used to be that the page was just a bunch of links the whole way down, but it has thus improved.

The page consists of a black background, a logo, in the center is a picture of Kurt, and on the left and right [center] are the sections listed.  One of the few problems I have experienced in this page is that [under Netscape] I recieve a Javascript error, and [in all browsers] when I the scrolling seems to be a bit rocky.  On the introductory page, you may want to download a font that it uses quite a bit on the page.  In all of the browsers, when you move your cursor over a section, it will highlight o yellow it brackets on the side. With or without the font, the page still looks great.

The Page

There are not many multimedia sections on the page, more information.

  • Nirvana Live Guide -  In my opinion, the best Nirvana Concert Chronology on the Internet.  It is very complete from the early tours in '87 to the very last show in '94.  Here is an example of the information found if you were looking a show up:  10/31/91 Seattle, WA Paramount Theater FORMATS: CD as "Trick Or Treat", Video PRO-shot, Audience Recording QUALITY: A Soundboard TIME: 70 minutes, 80 if the two songs really are missing HIGHLIGHTS: Another of their best shows, all known versions are supposedly missing "Spank Thru" and "Molly's Lips". This rumor is because on "Nevermind It's An Interview", it credits the live clip of "Molly's Lips" as being from this show. Probably the most available bootlegged show, this is a definite must-have for any Nirvana fan. SETLIST: Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam / Aneurysm / Drain You / School Floyd the Barber / Smells Like Teen Spirit / About A Girl / Polly Breed / Sliver / Love Buzz / Molly's Lips / Lithium / Spank Thru Been A Son / Negative Creep / On A Plain / Blew / Rape Me Territorial Pissings / Endless, Nameless.

  • Rare Songs FAQ - You have the Latest Editions, information about the songs, Original Nirvana Songs, Cover Songs, Individual members projects.  In the Original Nirvana songs, when you click on a song, you will see some information about the song, for example, when it was recorded and where you can find it.   The Cover songs and Individual members projects sections are similar to the original songs.

  • Latest Nirvana News - A lot of interesting stuff in this section.  It is pretty current, mainly focusing on record information, which is always good.

  • INCC - Stands for "Interactive Nirvana Concert Chronology."  Divided up into different sections according to a time span, including canceled dates, and Nirvana items for sale.  Keep in mind that the Nirvana Live Guide and the INCC go hand-in-hand.  Although they are similar, this one is more...well, interactive.

  • Interview Archive - There are three interview sections.  The first one ("The Vault"), focuses on  the Nevermind album and its sucess, the "Interesting Stuff," is where the majority of the interviews are.  "After the Storm" is the has plenty of other interviews also, this is after Kurt's death.

  • Live Guide (En Espanol) - The Live Guide in Spanish.

  • Nirvana Setlister - This gives a link to the Nirvana Setlister page, a great concert chronology program.

  • Other things - There are other sections on the page that I will not mention; there are Nirvana links, bootleg listings, among others.

Conclusion

This page does not seem to have a lot of Nirvana stuff, but what it does have is important.  The information that it does have is excellent.  This page is useful for just about anybody, but if your just looking to download MP3 files or what not, this may not be your page.  However your a bootleg trader and/or information about shows, the latest news, and maybe if your a little bit of a Pixies fan, this page is, with all sincerity, worth visiting.
