Introduction

The first thing that probably comes to a lot of our minds when we think of the "Foo Fighters" is Dave Grohl.   That would be a normal response.  People either know him as the frontman for the band or the drummer from Nirvana, or maybe both.  There are not as many Foo pages as there are Nirvana pages, but it is pretty close.

Connectivity Test

About the Connectivity test:

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Order of testing were in alphabetical order.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • Time shown in minute/second format.

  • Read the Disclaimer for more information.

Browser Time
Internet Explorer 0:22
Neoplanet 2.0 0:12
Netscape 4.01 0:25
Opera 3.51 0:25

Why did Neoplanet come out as the "winner"?  As usual, I suspect that it has such a small download time is because it is so closely related to Internet Explorer.  Next time I'll try to test Neoplanet first and then we'll see the results.

Disclaimer: The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 32k bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Graphics

About the test:

  • Matrox Millenium G200 8MB used.

  • ASTVision 4I monitor used at 16-bit color and 800x600 pixels.

  • Browsers viewed: IE   5/Opera 3.51/Netscape Navigator 4.01/NeoPlanet 2.0.

This page looks pretty good in all of the browsers.  You might want to note that Opera does not make the page look the best, but it does look similar to the more heavyweight browsers.

I believe what caused such a big download time (believe me, this page could have downloaded much quicker) was because of the large image on the top of the page.  Otherwise, the page would have downloaded much quicker.

The overall layout on the page is pretty simple.  Simplicity is not necessarily a bad thing.  For example, if you were going to go on a date with someone, would you want. to dress to kill or would you want to dress rather simple?   The layout has an image of a Foo Fighters album.   Under that are the news and anything else the site would like you to know.  At the bottom the page has its sections.

I do have a few suggestions.   My first suggestion, to cut download time, is to get rid of or decrease the size of the image.  For the layout, you should compress things together.  Instead of scrolling to see what you get, just have different things in one place.  Tables would be a great option for the page.

The Page

The page has a little bit of content.  I think it would be much wiser to tell you what is in the page than dividing things up into sections when there could only be about one or two things in a section.

  • Guide to Foo Fighers Live/Demo recordings:  Very similar to Nirvana recording lists.  What you see is the title or venue of the recording, the grade for quality, the length, and what format the show is available in.  They are chronologized.

  • Bootleg list:  A section that focuses on bootlegs from different bands.  It has some rules and guidelines for trading as well.

  • Guitar tabs:  Pretty self-exclamatory.  You'll find some tabs for the albums and some of the bootlegs as well.

  • Concert reviews:  For the following shows: 7/13/96; 8/16/97; 11/15/97.

  • Pictures from the '97 Tibetan Freedom show: Thirty-six (36) pictures in all.  The format for the pictures are okay, but it is not the best option.  For one, the pictures are in various sizes, thus causing the download time to be longer.  Secondly, it is better to have thumbnails or a decrease in the picture's size so that they are all the same.

  • Concert Chronology for European shows:  From the early shows in '95 to some of the latter ones in '98.   Includes three reviews which are included in the Concert reviews section.

  • Links:  Of good collection of Foo Fighters and miscellaneous sites.  Probably outdated.

  • Discography:  Nothing new here.  It includes who did what on the album or recording, the tracks, etc.

  • Other stuff:  There are some things on the site that will "not be updated anymore," which includes some of the older news and lyrics to rare songs.

Conclusion

This is an impressive site.   I am not saying that it is the best Foo Fighters page I have ever seen, but neverthless it offers something.  The sad thing about this site is that it has not been updated for quite some time.
