Page: Toad's Nirvana Page

Introduction

I believe I have come across this page before, infact, I believed I reviewed it.  I checked in the Reviews section and did not find "Toad's Nirvana page" listed.  So I thought I would take the time to review this page.

Connectivity Test

About the test:

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Order of testing were in alphabetical order.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • Time shown in minute/second format.

  • Read the Disclaimer for more information.

Browser Time
Internet Explorer 5.0 0:27
Neoplanet 2.0 0:07
Netscape 4.01 0:07
Opera 2.15 0:39

The small download time for Neoplanet and Netscape are for a few reasons.   Neoplanet is very much similar to IE, and it uses a lot of its codes.  I believe that when you test it after IE, the page itself will download faster.  Netscape downloaded quite fast because it was the first browser I viewed the page with.  In reality, all of the browsers have a similar download time.

Graphics

About the test:

  • Matrox Millenium G200 8MB used.

  • ASTVision 4I monitor used at 16-bit color and 800x600 pixels.

  • Browsers viewed: IE   5/Opera 3.51/Netscape Navigator 4.01/NeoPlanet 2.0.

The page claims that it will look best in just about any version of Netscape.  Nevertheles, it seems to look fine in all of the browsers with no major differences and problems.  It looks great in 800x600 monitor resolutin and 16-bit color.

The layout on the site is a bit outdated, but it is still a layout.  The black and green smiley background does add some spice to the page, but some things take away its constructiveness.  You will find tables around the page, which includes polls and the like.  The page also includes some of the material that you will find on the page, as well as links and "other" links.  As a result, I can see that this page did not really plan its layout.  I am not saying it is a terrible layout, but nowadays there is a lot more to a layout than WYSWYG (what you see is what you get).

Page Content

Due to the lack of variety of material on this page, it would be much better for me to put everything in the review in one section.  I am not saying that there is nothing on this page, but not enough to have seperate sections.

  • Voters Top 5/Top 3 - This is a section that you will notice on the main page.  It includes the Top 5 songs, and the Top 3 albums.

  • Forum - Not really the usual Bulletin Board System you will find on some sites.  Rather, this is where you can voice you own opinion regarding the question asked in each forum.  The first one asks for your opinion on he cause of Kurt's death, the second one focuses on your opinions on Wishkah, and the last one is your own topic.

  • MIDI files - Not all of the songs are listed by albums.  I am sure that you can find most of this on other Nirvana pages.  Neverthless, it's there.

  • Movies - A link to a pretty good page that has a great list of files to download.  All of the files, on average, are 1 to 3 MB in length, except for the full version of Drain You, which is a whopping 12 MB.

  • Lyrics - All of the lyrics are listed alphabetically.  I can tell they were copied from Smiley's page.

  • Posting - This is in form posting.  This is more of a free-for-all forum.  You can post your thoughts, raves, and poems.

  • From Smiley's - The following sections on the page link to Smiley's: Tabs and a Chatroom.

  • Was Kurt Murdered - A link to a great site that gives some information surrounding Kurt's death, and more.

  • Links - 7 Nirvana links and 10 "other" links.

Conclusion

A pretty OK site.  It's not something I would personally visit every day, but some of the information it does provide [or link to] is pretty good.   That is the primary reason for visiting the site I think.
