Christmas Music

Here are a few collections you might enjoy. If you are not real familiar with an artist, or unsure how well they do Christmas even if you like them otherwise, collections are a wonderful way to get acquainted...

SuperstarChristmasCDcover Superstar Christmas has something for just about everyone, and a lot for most of us. I'd say my favorite is Luther Vandross singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - what a voice ! And a beautiful saxophone solo in the middle... Tony Bennett - you can't go wrong - he sings "Winter Wonderland"... then Frank Sinatra sings "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow"... Placido Domingo does White Christmas - Bing Crosby, eat your heart out *L* ... Amy Grant sings "I'll Be Home For Christmas" - lovely (though her "Santa's Reindeer Ride" is MY favorite by Amy)... Celine Dion does a nice rendition of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)"... I'm not a big fan of Boyz II Men, but their "Silent Night is pretty... John Lennon and Yoko Ono sing their "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"... Does Bruce Springsteen sing a Christmas song other than "Merry Christmas Baby" ? It's okay, but this is the third collection I've got that includes it... it's not like it's a classic yet... Cyndi Lauper's "Early Christmas Morning" starts out with an interesting and lively Cajun beat. If you're a Lauper fan, you'll love it. If not, it's biggest problem is the song's unfamilarity... Gloria Estefan's "Christmas Through Your Eyes" is included. Very nice - the title track to her own Christmas album... then there is Mariah Carey's "O Holy Night" in her usual style. I like it... Barbra Streisand sings "The Lord's Prayer" - pretty, but not a Christmas song to my way of thinking... There are also songs by Michael Bolton ("Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"), Neil Diamond and Collin Raye.

CountrySuperstarChristmasCDcover A Country Superstar Christmas is great even if you're not a die-hard country fan.  I can't say there's a loser from the opener, George Strait's "Merry  Christmas Strait To You" to the final song, alone worth the price of admission: "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by Vince Gill, a duet with Jenny Gill has to be one of my favorites to listen to this - or any - Christmas season....  I love the instrumentation on the Strait tune - reminds me of the old Bob Wills music - or maybe the Bakersfield sound of Dwight Yoakam (who isn't on this CD)... Tracy Byrd's "Christmas Like Mama Used To Make It" is sort of anti-commercialism - and good music to boot... Alison Krause duets with Alan Jackson on "The Angels Cried." They sound good together, and this is a sweet song. I've said that Alison sounds much better when she sings with her group than alone... she's even better with Alan... Trisha Yearwood's contribution to this CD is a very pleasant version of "The Christmas Song"... by the way, if you didn't know, Mel Torme wrote this "chestnut" *S*... I just love Amy Grant's "Santa's Reindeer Ride" - it sounds so happy to me... And Lorrie Morgan singing "O Holy Night" - put it on repeat !... Reba McEntire does "Away In A Manger" while Wynonna sings - growls - "Let's Make A Baby King"... I don't mean growls in a bad way... I actually like this better than most of Wynonna's songs... Alabama performs "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" - in classic Alabama style... Besides Vince Gill's closer, "Let There Be Peace On Earth," he contributes an instrumental version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"... The Tractors do what is closest to a novelty number here, "Santa Claus Is Comin' (In A Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train)"... you'll love it *L*... still nice, but the lesser tracks, if you will: a seasonal country rocker, "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" by the Mavericks, and Gary Allan's "Please Come Home For Christmas."

You just might want to try A Country Superstar Christmas - Volume II as well...
