we're
only love I had never heard this song before, had no idea what it sounded like, if it was fast or slow, soft or loud, but I was sure about one thing, I loved it. I took one look at the title and I knew that this was a song that I liked. I think that the title in itself is REALLY beautiful, "we’re only love", it’s a very positive, simple and affirming title, but sometimes that’s exactly what people need to hear. When I finally got myself a copy of the song, well, what could I say? I was not disappointed at all. This is a truly beautiful song, probably one of the best songs they've chosen to cover. Some people may disagree with me on this. Initially, although I did really like it, it also struck me as being a little "plain", nothing exciting about it, no catchy chorus or guitar melody, just a simple structure and distinct Counting Crows sound. But that’s the whole core of the song, it’s so basic. So here’s my take on the song. At first, it’s not very easy to make sense of the song. It’s like one big question about our existence, Adam asks about who made us, gave us life, etc. Me being Christian, have an answer to that one, God. Actually it can apply to almost all religions, most religions would concur that we were all created by some higher being. The question though is WHY we were created in the first place? Well, I simply out of love. I firmly believe that I was created out of love. So strip away everything around us, look down deep inside ourselves, and we are only love, a product of love. This song serves as a reminder to all of us, to remember what we really are. In all the negativeness that surrounds us, when everything around us seems confusing and messed, well, we have at least one thing to keep us sane, that we are something special in ourselves, something beautiful, and (sorry, I can’t seem to say enough of this) we’re only love, at it’s best or worse.
