Kevin pulled up to the curb and shut his car off. He ran a hand over his
short, spiky hair and sighed. It was just like Brian and AJ to be late.
He climbed out of the car, headed for the apartment complex that his cousin
and their friend shared.
Knocking on the door, Kevin was greeted by a loud crash on the other side.
He opened the door, which wasn't locked, to find AJ standing in the front
hall. The small table that held the phone and a bunch of old magazines
had fallen over. Apparently, AJ's puppy, Delila, was the reason for it.
"What are you guys doing? We're supposed to be at Nick's right now!," Kevin
asked.AJ looked up and shrugged."If I could find Brian,we could go. He said
he was gonna take a walk, but he hasn't come back yet," AJ's hair was wrapped
in a towel, although he was fully dressed.
"Did you check the playground?," Kevin asked. AJ gave him a weird look, and
said,"Very funny.Brian's a little old for the playground." Kevin rolled
his eyes,and stated plainly,"That wasn't what I meant. There's a basketball
goal next to the monkey bars.Did he take a ball with him?"
"I don't know, man,he's got like a hundred of 'em," AJ replied, grabbing a
bottle of water from the refrigerator. He shooed Delila into his room,as
Kevin began to pick up the magazines off the floor. It was just like Brian
and AJ to share an apartment. Kevin realized how messy the place was.He
stood the table back up,and then walked over and turned off the TV.
"Lets walk down to the playground and see if we can find him," Kevin called
over his shoulder. He heard AJ grab his keys, and he turned for the door.
AJ was halfway out the door when Kevin grabbed him."Dude," he said, pointing
to AJ's hair,"Lose the towel."
"Brian!Yo,Brian!," AJ called. Kevin and AJ both stopped dead in their tracks.
About ten feet away from them, standing under the basketball goal, was Brian.
But he was surrounded by about 15 girls wanting autographs."Okay,we have
two choices.Either we can go back to the apartment and leave him here by
himself, or we can sign some autographs and then politely drag him away,"
AJ said. Kevin made a face and replied,"We're late enough already. If we
leave him here, we'll never get there before this afternoon."
"Okay,so we aren't going back?," AJ asked. "AJ!AJ!," AJ's eyes widened at
the sight of the girls walking towards him, calling his name."Looks like
we're not," Kevin said, laughing. They signed autographs and took pictures
with the girls,as Brian walked over with a few more. Then they explained
that they were late for an important meeting. Then, instead of going
straight to the car, they walked around the outside of the complex and
then over to Kevin's car. They did this to avoid being followed.
They reached Nick's house in record time, although Brian continuously
complained about Kevin's driving. When they got to Nick's,Howie was sitting
outside on the front steps."This is nuts! You guys were supposed to be here
hours ago!," he cried, the minute they stepped out of the car."Try telling
them that," Kevin responded, pointing to AJ and Brian."Brian was the
one who ran off,and got caught by the fans," AJ said, walking past Howie.
"Hey!That's not fair!," Brian cried, tossing his basketball into the hoop
over the garage.
"Okay,so what are we waiting for?," AJ asked, pulling his baseball cap off
long enough to run a hand over his curly red locks."Nick went to get some
gas to put in the boat, when we get to the docks," Howie replied."Is anybody
here?," Brian asked, looking at the house. "No.His dad left a little while
ago to run some errands, and Aaron and his mom are still in Germany for
promotions," Howie answered. Just as Brian and AJ were starting a game
of basketball, Nick pulled up in his car.
"C'mon!," he called. They all climbed into his car, and as he backed out
of the driveway Brian cranked up the radio. "Let's party!," AJ shouted,
as the others laughed.
They all climbed onto the huge yacht Nick's dad had rented. The name
scrawled on the side said Orlando Hurricane.Brian dropped his
basketball next to the lifejackets, as he and AJ went to check out the
lower deck.
"Wow, this is gonna be a blast," Howie said, standing at the front of
the huge boat."We need this," Nick replied. They all eagerly agreed with
him.So much had happened to all of them in the past few weeks. AJ had
just gotten back into his old routine after the accident in the snow
a few weeks back. He still seemed a little weak, but he was just as goofy
as he'd always been.
"Crank this puppy up,and lets roll!," AJ shouted. Nick steered the boat
away from the dock, as the wind picked up a little. He laughed as AJ walked
to the front of the boat, and "pretended" to fall overboard. Brian jokingly
tossed him a life jacket. "Here! You know how to swim, right?," he called.
"Help, help!," AJ screamed in a shrill voice. Even Kevin and Howie seemed
to be enjoying the scenery and having a good time. But they didn't know
that a storm was just minutes from hitting.
