The room was quiet and still,the only sound being the array of machines off to the left of the hospital bed. Kevin's body was still and peaceful looking. The sun was setting behind the set of blinds covering the window. Down below the window,in the streets, was a crowd of fans and media. But the noise inside the room was silent....still....almost death-like. The doctor sighed,and shook his head. It seemed so hopeless...and they could do nothing but wait to see if the medicine worked.
He closed the door softly behind him,and the silence resumed. The beeping
continued.
Kevin suddenly felt very groggy, yet alive. He opened his eyes.
It was like she came out of nowhere. She was tall,thin and pale. But she
was absolutely beautiful. Her long,honey blonde hair went past her shoulders
in thousands of curls. She smelled like fresh flowers...and she was wearing
a very thin white gown. Kevin assumed that she was a hospital patient herself.
He watched as she walked into the room,closing the door behind her.She smiled shyly at him,and he sat up in the bed.He had somehow disconnected himself from the machines,and he was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt.He felt like he was dreaming.
"How did you get in here?," he asked. His voice sounded distant...and strange. But he shook his head,as if trying to wake himself up.When he opened his eyes,she was still standing before him. She held out her hand. Unlike Kevin,she had on one simple silver ring...on her left hand,on her ring finger. Her gray eyes sparkled as she smiled at him again.Then she spoke.
"Come with me," she invited. He had no clue who she was,or where she had come from. But there was something warm and friendly about her...almost as if she was drawing him in. He took her hand in his own,and followed her out the door. The halls were empty and dark. No sound came from the other rooms.It was as if they were the only two people around.When they reached the hospital exit,she turned to him.They were still holding hands. "Are you sure this is what you want?," she questioned. He didn't understand what she meant. But he didn't want to let her go. "I want to go with you," he answered. She blushed,but nodded. "Allright," and then the doors opened before them.
Brian shot up out of his chair.Kevin's machine was flat-lining. He cried out for a doctor,as he was surrounded by people. He realized that Nick was pulling him away from the door,in the other direction of the lobby. But he resisted,until Howie caught him by the arm and they heard the sound of the machine again....until it went on too long. He heard one of the doctors call the time of death,and he felt like the world slid out from under him.AJ,who had been standing near the door,put his face in his hands and slumped to the floor. Howie let go of Brian's arm as he dropped his eyes to the floor.But Brian continued to fight Nick.Until Nick grabbed him as a sob escaped Brian's throat. Then he pushed himself against Nick,as they both cried. In a matter of minutes,the lives of five boys had been changed. How would they ever live without Kevin?
