Rusty Nails is made up of four guys and a sock puppet:
Andy, Matt, Alex, Calvin and Spikey respectively. Below is the story of the band, and a small description of each band member including influences, favorite bands, ages, etc.
The Rusty Nails began as a Christian Rock band at the local church. At that time the band was made up of 4 guys,
Alex and Matt, (whom you know)
and Matt and Scott (a different Matt.) We practiced in each-others houses and in the sanctuary,
and came up with a few songs. Little did we know how big we would be...
Two of the original songs were I Hate The Rain and Liar Liar (Very Christian Titles.) Anyways, we had an impromptu gig at the church. The three guitars were
out of tune, the drummer Ian didn't show up (like normal), Tony showed up with a keybord,
and Trevor played preset drum beats, everything was a mess.
Some early names.....
Some other names we considered later....
- Worthy Blanchard (We got it from Tombstones in a graveyard.)
- Liquid Fusion (Which we turned into the song)
- Freeze Dried Yellow 5
- The Cooties
(A name we came up with in David's Basement when we looked at that fun toy you all had long ago.... We used this name for "Matt and the Cooties" at the Toledo Hotel YouthQuake)
- The Cooties in the Basement
(Same Deal)
We really sucked bad.
We were so embarrassed, we decided to break up....
Later on in the next fall, Andy invited Alex over to his house to play. Seeing the skills Alex had (Ha, Ha), he gave Alex the Tab Book and CD to the In Utero album
by Nirvana. Alex learned Heart Shaped Box and others, and thought he and Andy could play in the talent show. The problem is that we had no name,
no singer, and no bass. Alex suggested Matt, and the now trio wanted a bass player. No bassist
would join the band however, and Andy decided to play bass and find a drummer. We found David and had some practices at his house and Andy's.
Before the tlent show however, Matt and Alex (Who go to the same church) went to a gathering in Toledo, we played there as practice for the real upcoming one. The Christian bands that were there only had acoustic guitars, and having no bassist or drummer, we did a mock(just for a laugh) acoustical version of My Sharona in front of about 1,000 people.
We were soon ready for the School Talent Show, with the heavy fire-power of 2 songs -- My Sharona by The Knack and Love Buzz,
by Nirvana. We entered the talent show auditions, and being the only band stood alone among the rest of the performers (Although they were great, just
not loud). With scores of 24's and 25's out of 25, we were going to be the finale of the show. The talent show awaited...
On the day of the talent show, we set up in the school gymnasium, and stayed off to a corner and waited for our turn to arrive. After
some girls danced to a Spice Girl song, ( I am not kidding) we ran out to a great applause.
Matt, being his normal way, dedicated My Sharona to "All the girls out there,"
and we played. After we shocked the audience with powered amps, we stunned them with our great playing. After the song, the chant was started.
"Rusty Nails! Rusty Nails!" We left the stage only to be brought on to play Love Buzz (due to popular demand.) We have rocked ever since...
After that, the drummer Dave dropped the band, and Andy moved to the drums. We played as a three-piece, or used Tom, Andy's brother for gigs. When we got to F.H.S, we found Calvin, a bassist. After about a month, he was a new member...
Now we write our own songs (surprised aren't you) including Liar Liar and I Hate You, our original songs from the Rusty Nails (I Hate the Rain was slightly
changed.) Also, we have brand new songs like
When I Went,
I Don't Know,
Matthew,
Liquid Fusion,
Breakpoint,
Angry Again, TV,
Coleus (The Girl I met at Camp).
Since the Talent Show, the Rusty Nails have played 5 gigs. The first, another gig at the church. Then we played three parties over the summer, and another church gig December 16 '98 at St. Geralds, Andy's church. The pics soon to come...
We're looking forward to playing at the F.H.S. Talent Show this year, but that's still underway....
We now rock the world on the internet. Please e-mail if you have questions about our path to fame. We also have our MailingList "RUSTYMAIL," you can sign up for.
