Pergamon

We visited 2 places in this city - one which is the Acropolis which included the Temple of Trajan and the Asclepion.

The acropolis included a Greek theatre one which is really located on the side of a hill. The Asclepion is where the sick would go to get healed, like our modern day hospitals. There is even a plaque that says "Death shall not enter here" which was why, according to our guide, they actually turn away terminally-ill patients to keep their perfect record. One interesting detail is that there is this pipe that has been used for centuries as "healing waters". Only in recent years has it been discovered that the water is radioactive!

Canakkale

The modern city of Canakkale used to be site of the great city of Troy. This is where the Trojan War was fought, all because of the beauty of Helen as told by Homer in his epic Iliad. Frankly, this place is no big deal to visit until you start to listen to the guide as he explain the origins of Troy.

The Troy that we are visiting now is not just just one city of Troy but many cities, each one build on top of the other over the centuries. The famous Troy where Helen resided is believed to be Troy IV, of which 3 other civilizations has flourished before it. Each new civilation would just pile the erath until an entire city is covered up, and then build another city of top of it. Altogether now, archaelogists has found 7 civilizations, and they are still digging to see if there is more.

But I guess when most people come here to visit Troy, the only thing they'll remember is the Trojan Horse.

Tomorrow, we return to Istanbul as a final leg of our journey.
