I got started with anime/manga when I was having trouble one summer with eye strain, and I decided to get some videos to watch instead of reading. I'd seen reviews of Ranma 1/2 and Oh My Goddess! in some random magazine I read, and so I bought the first one or two tapes of both series. I soon started looking on the Internet for more information. I think I joined the list about 6 months before the manga series ended in Japan.

Anyway, I knew nothing of Japanese when I started, but I'm trying to learn _because_ I'm a fan. I still am rather weak on vocabulary, but I've tried to learn more about the grammar and writing system in my self-study than I think would be in a typical intro-to-Japanese course. Beyond common phrases or two or three word sentences, it takes a lot of work for me to puzzle out the meaning of a few frames of manga, and sometimes I'm still stumped. But I feel like I'm still making progress in learning, and I can do it all at my own speed.
