Chapter 2: The job

At first glance you could never tell if anyone was awake in the flat in the Luthorcorp building. Lenon knew, he had tried many times but still as he rode up in the elevator he knew he was playing a dangerous game. Lionel was a heavy sleeper so if he was in bed Lenon would be ok. Lex might be up but Lex felt a strange need to protect Lenon and wouldn't tell Lionel.

Lenon always tried to guess if anyone was up there. Today he had guessed Lionel was asleep, that was why he was going home.

He had been to some party. General thing, drugs booze ad sluts aplenty. The life of the rich child. Sometimes Lenon just felt like laughing at all the poor fools, trying desperately to get in with the right people. It had hit a lot of people as graduation drew closer that soon they wouldn't be able to hide in school, they would be out there in the real world for everyone to judge. They were using the time they still had to try and win some influence. Lenon knew they were all headed for the gutter. It didn't bother him. He had plans for his future. Not that he would have told anyone. He was indistuctable. He planned on ruling the world by the time he was 20 at the latest. With his power he could do it to, no problem.

But first he had to get into the flat undetected.

Taking over the world was one thing, facing down a tired Lionel Luthor first thing in the morning was quite another.

At first all seems clear. The door of the lift opens and the hallway is empty. Lenon couldn't see light under any of the doors which probably meant everyone was asleep. He could hear faint music coming down from the bedrooms on the second floor but didn't let that bother him. Lionel was old fashioned and had insisted on installing staircases into the flat rather then just using the lift. Said it made the flat more real.

Lenon crept to the stairs now. He didn't want to risk it. As soon as he was up the stairs he was free.

Then the light came on. Lionel was lent casually in his office doorway, watching Lenon. Lenon looked away from him.

“Where have you been?” Lionel asked. Lenon didn't say anything, he looked up at his ‘father’, eyes devoid of emotion. He couldn't show Lionel emotion or it would ruin every chance he had with this company. Emotion made him weak.

“I was out.”

“Where?”

“It doesn't concern you.”

The older man wasn't buying it. Lenon hated to explain. Lionel deluded himself that his boys were good. They didn't smoke pot or have sex or get drunk. Lenon absently wondered if his father could smell the alcohol on him from all the way across the hall. It wouldn't surprise him.

“Lenon, everything my son's does concerns me...”

Lenon tuned out as Lionel started with the old speech about disgracing the Luthor family name and being taken out of the will. He turned and walked up the stairs. Lionel was yelling now. Lenon ignored him and went to his room, slamming the door.

He could hear music coming from Lex’s room across the corridor. He absently wondered how his brother got in and out without Lionel noticing. He though about asking but didn't really want to pay the price for the information. Everything had a price and sometimes the price Lex wanted was just to expensive.

But it was only a matter of time before Lionel went through with his treats and Lenon was cut out of the will.

The door to Lenon’s room swung open. Lex stood there looking at him. Lenon glared at his brother but the glare didn't make the older boy go away.

Lenon moved to retrieve his box from the wardrobe. Lex came into the room and let the door shut. Lenon lit up and Lex pulled a roll up from his pocket and lit up to. The brothers sat facing each other on the bed, taking deep drags. Finally Lex spoke.

“Got in trouble again?”

“Yeah,” Lenon replied. He didn't want to talk about it but he knew Lex wouldn't leave the room until he did. He was strong enough to physically throw Lex from the room but last time he had done that he had been made to be home on time after school, and had his driving privileges revoked.

“I could tell you how to get in without being seen,” Lex said, smiling. Just the information Lenon needed.

“What's the price?”

Lex took a picture out of his pocket and handed it to Lenon. It was a girl, about 18 with long wavy red hair and freckles.

“Lisa Larson,” Lex told him. “Little bit of a good girl. Tramp turned me down. Give her a good fucking and I’ll tell you how to get in without Lionel knowing.”

“Innocent?” Lenon asked, studying the girl

“Very. She should be a bit of a challenge. I'm quite certain she's a virgin. Her parents are catholics so she'd never even seen a sex ed tape.”

Lenon nodded. Lex grinned. Lex was getting his way again. Lenon wished like hell he was the older brother who knew how to get into the house and could charge Lex for things. At least it was something quite pleasurable Lex was asking him to do. His older brother had asked him to do far worse for less.

Lenon was a chameleon. He could slip into any social situation. It was his money that did it really. Who would argue with one of the Luthors? Only a mad man. Because of his money, and also his reputation, no-one was bothered when he strode confidently into a college party.

He already knew his target would be here. If she hadn't fallen for Lex then she must be strong on her morals. He was glad. The last innocent he had tried to convert turned out to be a slut.

It didn't take him long to spot her. She was sat alone at the back of the bar. There were some tables set up and she was one of the few people still sitting. This party was an official college party so, in theory, there was no drink or drugs. Lenon had got high before he came. Graham had finally come through with the cocaine and he felt an obsession coming on. He sniffed semi-regularly. Lex had told him it was a bad thing to get into but what did that asshole know?

The music wasn't what he was use to hearing. It ranged from rock to pop. A love song started and he decided to make his move. He plastered his best smile cross his face and approached the girl.

As he came closer she glanced up at him. Lex was right, she was so innocent. He couldn't wait to show her what a real fuck was.

“Hi,” he said, silkily. She smiled shyly at him. He wondered if many men approached her. She wasn't much to look at that was sure but at least some guys must be pulled in by her naivety. Guys like his older brother.

Lenon still wasn't sure why Lex had asked him to do this. Lex normally took care of his own business. It didn't make sense that he wanted Lenon to sort this out. Well, he was getting paid, why should he complain?

It would take something special to pull her in. He didn't think for a second that Lex hadn't tried most approaches to this seduction. From the number of women Lenon knew had been in Lex’s bed, it was a sure bet the older boy was no amateur when it came to seduction. It this girl had turned him down then she must be something else.

Lex was lazy though. Unlike Lenon he went after the easy lovers, the ones who wanted him. Made him lazy. Made him loose his touch. Lenon like girls who played hard to get though. He would teach this bitch.

She was looking at him. She was so cute.

“I'm Lenon.”

“Your reputation precedes you. I don't really think it would do my reputation any good to be seen talking to you. I'd better go.”

Then she was gone. Lenon stood there in a daze for a moment, then looked around the bar casually, trying to hide his embarrassment. He saw Lex lent against the bar, staring at him. Damn. He needed to lay that bitch. It wasn't about money now, it was about showing Lex he was good enough.

The university students who didn't like spending their nights in the various parties going on around the place would often find themselves in one of the coffee houses around town. Especially the intellectuals. Lenon didn't quite know what it was with intellectuals and coffee houses but he was damn glad for it as it made Lisa so much easier to find. As he predicted she was a coffee shop intellectual. She looked the part. Lenon had never been one for coffee shops but you had to do what you had to do.

The particular place where Lisa chose to drink her coffee was a small shop near the campus called ‘Coffee and cream.’ He had paid a guy from the college to find out for him. Much better then trawling around the shops himself looking for her. It was just as well he didn't go for that approach, this place was ao small he might have missed it. It was dimly lit with a ‘old world’ feel. The walls were half covered with dark wooden panelling and the whole place smelt of coffee. All the light came from lamps set up around tables and next to chairs where people were sat reading or chatting in small groups.

It took him a moment to spot her in the dim light. She was sat alone in an overstuffed chair under a lamp reading a book and sipping her coffee. She seemed to fit right in here. She was in her element but this didn't bother Lenon. If she was feeling relaxed she might talk to him, and with the way things were going just talking would be enough.

He ordered some coffee and made his way over to her. That was another thing he hated about coffee shops, why couldn't they just say coffee, tea, coffee with cream? They had to come up with weird names for everything. Lenon was no coffee buff so he didn't really know the difference between them all. He didn't really care to learn either.

She didn't look up as he pulled a chair up besides her. He cleared his throat and she glanced at him, then back to her book.

“I thought I said I didn't want to talk to you.”

“I know, but your so fascinating. I couldn't help but track you down.”

She sighed in frustration. She was frustrated? With him?

“Look, I don't know what I have to saw to get this through to you but like I told your brother, no means no.”

Damn, she wasn't going to be easy. And he really didn't have the patience. He seriously doubted a way to get into the flat without being noticed was worth this. This girl was more damn trouble then she was worth and she wasn't even that pretty. But if he didn't then his honour would suffer. Lex would never take him seriously again if he couldn't even seduce this girl, and neither would anyone else.

Lex thought it was bad living in his fathers shadow, Lenon had to live in both of their shadows. Lionel and Lex. He was just the kid, the little one, the baby. He would forever be judged on what Lionel and Lex did before him. Things he had minimal control over. He hated it.

She was staring at him now, obviously expecting him to leave. He doesn't feel like leaving so stays where he is. She turns her attention back to her book.

He hated being ignored. He really did. He cleared his through but she didn't do him the common courtesy of looking up so he reached out and took the book from her fingers.

“HEY!” she exclaimed rather loudly.

“If your going to be rude and ignore me then I’ll be rude to,” he said, glancing through the book. It was fiendishly thick with a tatty paperback cover. He placed it on the table.

“Now if you can just treat me civilly I'm sure this will all be over soon.”

She grabbed the book then turned and stalked towards the door. He scrambled to catch up with her as she stepped out into the deserted street. Now he hadn't exactly imagined confronting her in a deserted street. It was hardly the relaxing atmosphere he was hoping for.

“Is this a game for you?” she asked him sharply, spinning on her heel. At least she was talking to him.

“What do you mean?”

“This is a game, isn't it. Your brother fails to seduce me and you see a chance to better him so you come after me.”

“I swear, it's nothing like that.”

“I'm NOT stupid. I'm not playing you fucked up little games. I swear I would rather die then fuck you Lenon Luthor. Goodbye.”

She turned and stalked of. He stood there for a second, then grabbed a roll up from his pocket, lit up, and took a deep drag. Feeling better he went back to his car. Third time was a charm.

~*~*~*~

Lisa Larson stood in front of her bedroom mirror. She was dressed in loose, worn jeans and an old white t-shirt. Her frazzled red hair was pulled back into a tight bobble but still puffed up around behind her. In the mirror there was a small frown on her face and a wrinkle on the bridge of her nose.

Lenon turned the photo over and over in his hands, as if staring at her image could make her sleep with him. He had yet to come up with another cunning plan to get him in bed, but he was sure one would come to him soon. It always did. Besides, he had to show Lex he could do this, or he would never be taken seriously by the older boy again.

Why did he ever get into this in the first place. He would deal with being yelled at for the rest of his life. Lenon knew it ran deeper then the little bit of information his brother ofered though. Lenon was always the baby. Always the little mute boy who hadn't been able to speak for months. Lenon didn't remember a thing from the worst part of his life. His early memory was a vague memory of corn. He had been told than Lionel found him wandering the in cornfield. Wandering the cornfield. Alone. An orphan. Not really a Luthor, ever.

Lenon wasn't stupid. He guessed he would be in some orphanage now if Lionel hadn't found the ship. Lenon had never seen the ship himself. It was locked up in some lab somewhere. But an alien child. Who knew what powers it could have?

Lenon had powers all right. Powers even his bloodthirsty father couldn't dream of and would never know about. Not that Lionel and Lex didn't have a fair bit of powers to, but the things Lenon could do made anything they could do look like child's play. Of course neither of the Luthors suspected that. Well, maybe Lex, but definitely not Lionel. Lionel wouldn't suspect it if it came up and hit him in the nose. Lionel was very out of it. Had been since the incident.

Lenon’s attention was drawn away from that unpleasant train of thought when the door to his room swung open and Lex let himself in. Lenon knew Lex thought he owned the younger boy. He didn't.

Lex sauntered into the room and collapsed on Lenon’s bed. Lenon waited patiently.

Lex must be here for a reason.

“How's the job coming?”

Lenon glanced back down at the picture in his hand.

“It's coming,” he replied. Lex grinned and ran his hand over his scalp. Lenon didn't move. He knew Lex tried to unnerve him, it wouldn't work.

“How about if I made your job a little easier?”

“I don't need your fucking help,” Lenon snapped. Lex smiled and dropped an envelope on the bed, then turned and walked out. Lenon looked hesitantly at the envelope, then reached out and opened it. There was a tape inside. He turned and showed it in his stereo system. A second later Lisa's voice filled the room. It was obviously snatched tape from a conversation she wasn't aware was being taped.

“I’d really love to see Les Miserable. It's only in town for three weeks though and I don't have the money. I don't want to go alone anyway.”

~*~*~*~

The tickets hadn't been hard to find. A few dollar bills and he had two balcony seats for the closing night. Some of the best damn seats in the house to. He could use these quite nicely on some upper class bitch and get laid for it to. Lenon was quickly beginning to realise that Lisa wasn't a one night girl. He was going to have to convince her they were solutes. He couldn't imagine anything more amazing then breaking her when he was done with her.

She was right where he expect her to be. It was lunchtime and she was using the time to do more work in the library. Why not?

He approached her desk slowly, then dropped the envelope. It had her name on the front. A note from him inside, telling her he had seen the play was on and though of her. Wonderful, sentimental junk. She would love it.

Just as he turned to walk away she looked up sharply at him.

“What's that?” she demanded.

“It's for you,” he said softly. Smile, no teeth, puppy dog eyes. He knew how to make girls like him. Look innocent. Look vulnerable. He watcher her open the envelope and her jaw drop. He couldn't blame her. If he opened a envelope and found something he really wanted but wasn't expecting he would be thrilled. Of course, that would never happen to him. He got EVERYTHING he wanted.

“Where did you get these?”

He was going to say ‘I have my sources’ but he didn't think that would go down well. Instead he smiled mysteriously.

“Can't tell you all my secrets, can I?”

“And I suppose you want t come with me?”

“Can't I do something nice? Damn it! Your just like everyone else.” Lenon had this act to perfection. He absently wondered how many girls had fallen for it. “You just judge me by what the papers say and my brother and father. Maybe I just anted to do something nice?”

He turned to stalk out ... 3 ... 2 ... 1...

“Wait.”

Like putty in his hand.

He turned slowly and looked at her. She smiled slowly.

“Thanks.”
