A Spy for a Spy
The Chief is kidnapped by a magician named Siegfried, who
tries to swap the Chief for the X11. Max is unable to
raise the money to pay the ransom so he kidnaps KAOS'
top agent, which sets off a wave of kidnappings.
This is the first appearance of Siegfried.
The Only Way to Die
Max survives a murder attempt, but CONTROL tells everyone
he died so that Max can catch the Blaster, who blows up
government buildings. While mourning, 99 takes an
assignment guarding Antonio Carlos Carioca, who is really
the Blaster.
Strike While the Agent is Hot
Agent 47 dies, leaving Max in charge of the Spys' Guild
labor negotiations. Max proves to be a ruthless
negotiator and gets a deathbed contract from the Chief.
Maxwell Smart, Alias Jimmy
Ballantine
Max investigates a barber shop that is a KAOS front.
Disguised as safecracker Jimmy Ballantine, Max breaks
into the Federal Reserve Bank.
Anatomy of a Lover
KAOS reprograms Hymie and he tries to kill the Chief. Max
is order to dismantle Hymie, but instead he hides Hymie
in his apartment, where Hymie meets the Chief's niece.
Kiss of Death
Max rescues Tracy Dunhill, a rich heiress who then falls
in love with him. Unknown to Max, Dunhill is faking her
love and is planning to kill Max with poison lipstick.
Casablanca
Max is ordered to vacation in Canada, but instead he
pursues the Choker to Casablanca. 99 is already there
undercover and she fails to recognize Max, who also fails
to recognize her.
The Greatest Spy on Earth
Max and 99 go undercover at a circus to find a KAOS
diamond smuggling ring. This features one of the greatest
characters ever created by Buck Henry, Gertrude/Gerald,
the half-man half-woman sideshow freak.
Hoo Done It
In an Agatha Christie take-off, Colonel Forsythe is
murdered in a tropical hotel. Max and hotel guest Harry
Hoo try and find the murder as all the other guests
disappear one by one.
Rub-a-Dub-Dub...Three Spies in a
Sub
1/2 Max and 99 end up captured in a KAOS sub commanded by
Siegfried. The Chief is then forced to decide between
torpedoing the sub and killing his friends or letting the
sub escape.
The Decoy
CONTROL sets KAOS up to believe the Max is carrying a new
code. KAOS kidnaps him and uses several methods, except
torture, to try and extract the new code from him.
Bronzefinger
Max learns about art to try and capture notorious art
thief, Bronzefinger. Unfortunately, all of Max's suspects
get murdered by Bronzefinger and both 99 and he fall into
the metallic grasp of Bronzefinger.
The Whole Tooth and...
Max is carrying plans for a nuclear reactor when he is
spotted by KAOS. He hides the tooth in the mouth of a man
on his way to jail, forcing Max to become a convict to
get the tooth back.
Island of the Darned
Hans Hunter has set up an island where he hunts CONTROL
agents for fun and profit. He captures 86 and 99 and
forces them in a hunt for their lives.
Perils in a Pet Shop
Max follows the clues from a talking KAOS parrot to
Kilmen's Pet Shop. Max discovers that the pet shop is
home base for Melnick, the Smiling Killer. Melnick was
named after Dan Melnick, a partner in Talent Associates,
the production company of Get Smart.
It Takes One to Know One
Femme fatale Octavia is destroying the number two men of
CONTROL, driving them wild with lust. The Chief appoints
Hymie the new number two man, knowing that he'll be
immune from Octavia's charms. Unfortunately for CONTROL,
the Chief doesn't know Octavia's big secret.
Someone Down Here Hates Me
Siegfried puts a $250,000 contract out on Max. Worse than
that, if they don't kill Max, the annual KAOS barbeque
and bingo party is canceled. Max becomes a paranoid wreck
and then decides plastic surgery is the only way to avoid
getting killed.
Cutback at CONTROL
A Senate investigating committee is close to closing down
CONTROL. 86 then goes to work for KAOS, hoping he can
find something big to convince the Senate to keep CONTROL
in existence.
The Mummy
KAOS is smuggling its agents into America in mummy cases
and returning the mummy cases with kidnapped CONTROL
agents. Max gets kidnapped, wrapped in bandages, and
paralyzed, but still manages to save the day.
The Girls From KAOS
beauty pageant is the background for this episode. Max is
assigned to protect Miss USA, while another contestant is
a KAOS plant.
The Man From Yenta
Israel's intelligence agency, Yenta, sends Agent 498 to
help CONTROL protect arab Prince Abu Ben Bubbie. Despite
working on a shoestring (Israel is a small country), 498,
86, & 99 defeat LeMoco, KAOS' master of disguise,
even though everybody in the room is dressed as an arab
prince.
Smart Fit the Battle of Jericho
Buildings built by Joshua Construction somehow keep
blowing up. Max goes undercover as a construction worker
to try and discover why.
Where-What-How-Who Am I?
86 overhears a KAOS plot to kill U.S. space scientists.
Before he can warn them, Max suffers amnesia in a car
crash. Rather than kill him, KAOS keeps feeding Max
amnesia pills so that he can't spoil their plan.
How to Succeed in the Spy
Business Without Really Trying
While in a KAOS shootout, Max and 99 are saved by
Siegfried, who kills a KAOS agent and then announces his
attention to defect. KAOS tries to kill Siegfried before
he can reveal their "Operation Big K" at
CONTROL's annual Chief's Banquet. In this episode, we
learn that Siegfried's nastiness comes from his parent's
refusal to give him a sled.
The Expendable Agent
British scientist Professor Whitakker comes to the U.S.
to reveal his new rocket fuel formula. Max hides the
professor at his apartment, where's he's helped by
British agent Chain. Smart has a difficult time believing
that anyone as clumsy as Chain can be a secret agent.
Appointment in Sahara
KAOS gets a nuclear bomb and tries to blackmail the world
into total disarmament. Max and 99 are sent to the Sahara
to try and locate and destroy the KAOS bomb.
Pussycats Galore
Important scientists have been disappearing from Pussycat
Clubs so Max and 99 disguise themselves as Fritz and
Greta Braun, married German scientists. They are ably
assisted by CONTROL agent Charlie Weaver, who disguises
himself as a Pussycat. This episode is Ted Knight's
second appearance as a KAOS agent.
A Man Called Smart, Parts 1-3
KAOS steals a water evaporation formula and blackmails
the country by threatening to dry up all its water. Max's
informant, character actor Russell Bedioyskin, is shot,
as is the Chief in a hospital shootout. Admiral Hardgrave
comes back to CONTROL to lead it through this crisis as
Max and 99 head to California.
