"What kind of laws?" Lucky asked, uncertain if he really wanted to know.
She stood and took a couple of steps away from him. "It's difficult to explain but the number one rule is 'never fall in love with a human'. Never."
Love? His eyes widened as he stood up beside her. "Are you saying that you love me?"
"No. Yes." Liz frowned, "I don't know." She offered him a small smile, "It doesn't matter if I do or don't, we're going to dead pretty soon."
"Dead? You mean . . ."
"Oh yeah, they're going to kill us." She answered matter-of-factly.
"Whoa, hold the bus! Who's going to kill us?" Lucky took a deep breath, this was more complicated than he had originally thought, not only was he in love with a vampire, she was a paranoid vampire.
"They are. You wouldn't understand, Lucky, you humans have so many rules that make no sense and when they are broken, the law enforcers can't even catch the people who did it. It is so different with us . . ." She turned away, "I don't want to die, Lucky. I don't."
"Surely, you don't mean that they'll kill us because we love eachother?" He reached out to touch her arm, "That's crazy."
"They are crazy, I think that they may know about us." She paused, letting him digest all of this, "We don't have long, if you want to live and be together there is only one solution."
She turned her head and he noticed that her eyes began to change color, they were brighter, more defined, her pupils grew smaller, almost disappearing all together. He began to breath faster. "What's that?"
"Become like me." Her eyes pierced through him. "Then the rule doesn't apply anymore."
He took a step away from her, he didn't like the look that she gave him, it made him feel like a piece of meat. "Become like you?"
"Yes, like me." She watched him carefully as he thought it over. She knew instantly that he would never go for it. The idea repulsed him, she could see it in his eyes. But there was no other way . . . although she wasn't even sure if this would work. She had never made another vampire before. Her parents were against the transformation movement and instilled their beliefs into their daughters. Slowly her eyes returned to normal, and she sighed. "I understand."
Lucky clentched his fists tightly together, resisting the urge to touch her. "I have to go." He said quietly.
"Okay." She replied, her eyes trying to read him.
"Maybe I'll see you later?"
"Maybe." If we aren't dead first, she thought.
"Good bye."
"Good bye." She watched him leave. When he was gone she realized that he never did answer her question. How did he know about vampires?
~~~ Felica sat in her living room, a dazed expression on her face. Frisco was back in town. She closed her eyes and she could clearly see his face in her mind. She would never have imagined that he would get so old. He was still handsome, of course, just more distingushed. The years didn't really change him, at least not to her. He was still the first man that she fell in love, the man that she shared children with. Why did he have to come back? She thought she had gotten over him, she loved Mac and she always will, but Frisco always had a way to make her feel so dependent on him, like she couldn't live without him. Now he was back, for how long, he didn't say. In fact he didn't say much, just that he wanted to talk to Maxie. When he learned that she wasn't home, he couldn't get away fast enough. She wondered where he was living, how he was doing. He didn't look very happy. He looked down right sad.
She was startled when Maxie sat down next to her. "Hey, sweetheart. How was your day?"
Maxie smiled weakly, "Good."
Felicia wrinkled her nose, "Are you okay? You look like you want to talk."
Maxie raised her eyes to look at her mother's, "Actually, I wanted to tell you something."
"Okay."
"The other day, I saw someone." Maxie took a deep breath, "I don't know how you will take this though."
A look of understanding came over her, Maxie must've seen her father, which explains why she was acting strange. "If it's about your father, I already know."
A flash of surprise flickered across her face, "Did Mac tell you?" She asked, not really wanting an answer, she didn't tell Mac not to say anything, but she thought that they had an understanding. He never really interferred with her problems, he always let her work things out for herself. She supposed he wanted to teach her self-reliance.
"Mac?" She touched her daughter's face, "He didn't tell me. You don't have to look so betrayed." Felicia had no problem with Mac keeping some things from her, she knew of the deep bond that he and Maxie shared, and Maxie always came to her soon after.
She smiled with relief, "How did you find out?"
"He stopped by today. He wanted to talk to you."
"I'll bet." She muttered, lowering her eyes. Of course he wanted to talk, he just wanted to make her love him again and then dissappear. She lived that life once and she refused to go back. Besides, he wasn't her father anymore, Mac was.
"Oh Maxie, don't let your anger with him ruin this chance to talk to him. He loves you. I know this for a fact. You haven't seen him in so long . . ."
"Isn't that the point, mother?" She looked up, her blue eyes flashing angrily. "I haven't seen him in a long time. I grew up without him. I went through school, my first date, my graduation, started collage . . . and I did all of those things without him. And you know what? I didn't even feel that anything was missing." She took a deep breath, "I don't want to talk about this anymore. If he comes back, I'm not home, whether I am or not." She stood and stomped up the stairs, releasing all her pent up anger. How dare he? Showing up, out of the blue, expecting her to welcome him with open arms. If that was what he had hoping for, then he had another thing coming.
~~~ How hard can this be? He picked up the phone, punched in three numbers, changed his mind and clicked the off button. He leaned back against the wall, gently thumping his head against the wood. Closing his eyes, he thought back to their first date, how pretty she looked, how her face lite up when she smiled, the way her touch sent his skin on fire . . . He had never felt like this about anyone before, not even with Cherie, whom he had dated the most during the first couple years of high school. Lulu was so different from all of them, more carefree, not really concerned of what people thought of her and she accepted people for who they are, not what they could do for her. She was like a breath of fresh air from all those shallow girls that he had known. They only wanted him because he could make them popular, they never really knew him and he didn't want them too. It was so much easier letting people think what they want, not having to tell anyone about himself. But with Lulu, he felt he could tell her anything and he knew that she wouldn't judge him. It scared him, but also intrigued him.
He reached for the phone, deciding to call her for real, when it rang. Startled, he dropped it on his bed. It kept ringing, and he wondered why no one had picked it up yet when he realized that he was the only one home. His sisters had gone to the movie and his parents were out.
"Hello?"
"Hi. It's me."
A smile crept onto his face. "Hi me, how are you doing?"
He could hear her laugh on the other end, "I'm good, it isn't too late to call is it?"
Glancing at the clock next to his bed he shook his head, "No, I think I'm allowed to stay up past ten." He joked.
"So . . . did you finish mowing the lawn?"
"Yeah, I was taking a break when you came by."
"Oh. I thought . . . never mind." He sensed that she wanted to say something but changed her mind.
"You thought what?"
"It's silly, really . . ."
"Come on, you can tell me anything."
"I thought you were mad at me or something."
"What?" He asked, totally surprised.
"Well, you rushed off as soon as you saw me . . . I don't know. I told you it was silly."
"I rushed off because . . ." All of a sudden he was embarresed to say it. "I was sweaty and I needed a shower . . ."
"Oh."
"Well, in any case, I'm not mad." He assured her.
"That's good." He could hear the relief in her voice and it made him feel happy. She cared enough about him to be bothered if he was mad at her.
"Are we still getting together tomorrow?" She asked.
"You bet. I can hardly wait."
"Me neither."
"Why should we wait? Why don't you come over and we can watch some videos or something?"
"Really? Won't your parents mind?"
"They're out right now, but I'm sure they won't mind. I mean they've known you since . . . well, forever."
"Okay. I would love to come over."
"Good. I'll pick you up in a half hour?"
"I'll be waiting." She promised.
"Okay, see you soon."
"Bye."
He hung up, a goofy smile on his plastered on his face. He couldn't wait to see her again.
~~~ Frisco wandered the streets of Port Charles, depressed. He should've known that Maxie wouldn't be at home and even if she was he doubted that she would even consider talking to him. He decided it was best if he didn't talk to Georgie. She grew up not knowing who he was, only knew that a man named Frisco Jones was her biological father. Mac was her father now. He smiled ruefully, at least his daughters got along. The heated glare that Georgie gave him was enough indication that they were very close.
Then there was Felicia. The years had not changed her. She was still as beautiful as ever. He sat on a bench, somewhere in the downtown area. And it hurt as much as ever to see what he gave up. He could be Mac right now if he hadn't been so selfish. He could have the house, the picket fence, the wife, his children . . . He closed his eyes, trying to block out the image of what could have been. Clentching his fists together, he vowed not to think of what if's. They only made him feel sorrier for himself. But he also had a life. He had his job, his position at SAF, he had Issabelle, who was, in a sense, like a daughter to him. Suddenly, he had an urge to hear her voice, to feel needed, loved. He reached for his cell phone and dialed the base.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Jim, it's Frisco."
"Hey boss! How's your vacation?"
"Good. Can I talk to Issabelle?"
"Sure, hang on."
Frisco waited paitiently while Issabelle came on line. His wandered the street, trying to pinpoint where he was. He was in somewhere on Main St. It was late, the street lights were on, and most of the stores were closed. The streets were practically deserted, but he wasn't afraid. If he could face down vampires, then he could certainly handle any kind of trouble that might happen. Across the street, a lone male was talking on his cell phone.
Not paying much attention to him, Frisco concentrated on Issabelle's voice.
"Frisco? Are you there?"
"Hey, Issabelle. How are you holding up?"
"I'm doing really good. How about you? Did you find your family?"
"Yeah. I found them."
"You don't sound too happy. Is something wrong?"
"I guess you could say that. Maxie, well, she wasn't exactly overjoyed to see me . . ." His voice trailed off as he noticed that a female was following the male. Her speed was incredible. At first she was walking and then she was on him. The man let out a yelp of surprise before his head hit the cement. Frisco's eyes widened as his his senses went on red alert. Vampire!
"Frisco? Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good, I just . . . put Jim back on the phone, will you?"
"Sure."
He heard some muffled voices before Jim came back on. "Yeah boss?"
"I need a team in Port Charles, New York, ASAP. Vampire sighting. Female, mid twenties, avereage height, petite." He squinted, they were far away now, she had dragged him off into a nearby alley. He would follow her but he was without his equiptment and he wouldn't dare go up against a vampire alone. Not if he wanted to live.
"Got it boss. Want me to contact Lucky?"
"No. I'll get in touch with him."
"Okay. I'll dispatch a team, should be there in a couple of hours."
"Thanks Jim. Tell Issabelle I'll talk to her later. Gotta go." He clicked off his phone and shoved it in his pocket. He watched the alley and saw the creature exit. Very casually she strolled out and continued her original path. She passed under a street lamp and Frisco could see a flash of red and green. Probably some piece of jewelery. Whatever the case, she won't be needing it for where she's going.
~~~ Off into the distance a man watched the entire scene. He saw the girl attack the man, and how she dragged him into a darkened alley to drink his blood. He also another man watching across the street, how he had jumped up and began to talk about her to someone. He could hear the fear and excitement in his voice. He must be one of those commando characters. No matter, he'll just let things play out, sooner or later, the third party will surface, revealing the last piece to the puzzle. Patience. He waited centurties for this to occur, he could wait a couple of more days.
