"Hi Lucky," Liz said softly.
"Elizabeth, I . . . I'm glad you are here," Lucky smiled jumping to his feet. "I'd offer you a place to sit, but after all these years, there are still no chairs here."
"I see," Liz laughed. "I have to ask you something, and I need a straight answer."
"You know that is what I'll give you, I'll never lie to you Elizabeth."
"What do you call letting me think you died in that fire?" Liz asked sharply. "Forget it, don't answer that. I have to know why you never tried to get in touch with me, give me some sort of sign."
Lucky thought back for a moment. "I did, when I was still locked up. I stole his phone and called you but . . .you couldn't here me, it was all . . ." Lucky shook his head.
"Do you still love me?" she asked bluntly.
"What? You know the answer to that. Elizabeth I'll love forever, long after both of us our gone my love for you will still be strong. Yes, I love you," Lucky said directly. He took her hand into his and moved it to his heart.
"I'm sorry," she said weakly. "I shouldn't have doubted . . ." she paused and looked up into his eyes. For a moment she was transported back ten years. Ten years of pain and loss was gone and all that existed, all that mattered was that moment with Lucky. But it all ended in one sweeping blink of an eye. "How could you, Lucky, you promised me you would never leave me. You promised me!" she yelled.
Lucky stared shamefully to the ground, his heart breaking for hurting her. "I'm so, so sorry."
"You were the one who was so adamant about not lying. And I never lied to you, why would I want to. But now, I feel like you told me the biggest lie of them all."
"I know what I've done, I know I've hurt you, and I swear it hurts me so badly. I'll do anything, anything to makes things better for you."
"I'm waiting Lucky, waiting for you to say that one thing that will make it all go away. When we were kids you were so good at that. I'm waiting, just say it."
"Elizabeth, I don't know what it is you want me to say. I don't know how to make the last ten years go away. If I did, I would do it in a heartbeat. I love you so much, being away from you I didn't want to live, I didn't have a reason. Now I do, I'm not going to hurt you again, I'm not going to hurt my father. Whatever you want I'll do, I'll do it," Lucky pleaded, his hand gently on her cheek looking her straight in the eye.
"You look awful," Kevin said coming up to Chris.
"I'm alright, my short shift turned into a long shift," he smiled. "Kevin, can I talk to you?"
"Isn't that what we are doing?"
"I mean, can I get your professional opinion on something?"
Kevin looked at Chris and figured it must be something about Lucky's reappearance. "Sure, let's go to my office," Kevin said. He had been reinstated at GH seven years ago and was now head of the psychiatric department. "So, what is the problem?"
Chris eyed the couch in the office and laughed, before sitting down. "It's Liz . . .I know this will sound selfish, but why did he have to come back? I have nothing against him personally, I hear he is a good guy, but why? I can't compete, he's the love of Liz's life, I'm just her pal," he said sadly
. "And you think Liz will go right back to Lucky?"
"Of course she will. I've known her for a few years now, and I know what I saw. Every time she'd talk about him, or hear someone mention him, her entire face would light up. It was amazing . . .she's amazing. I remember when I first met her. It was right after Eve left to be with Scott. I was so upset, I felt like we were meant to be and I was never given a chance to prove that to her. And then Liz walked into my, or rather into me," Chris said with a laugh, thinking back to the first time he had actual contact with her.
~~~~~~3 years earlier~~~~~~
Liz stepped off of the elevator, her eyes concentrating on a stack of papers in her hand. Before she knew it, she was lying on her back, her papers scattered everywhere, with a handsome man standing above her, apologizing profusely.
"Oh man, I'm so sorry, I should really watch where I'm going more often. Are you alright?" he asked, bending down and picking up the papers for her. "Here, let me give you a hand," he said extending his left hand.
"Thank you . ..but really it was my fault, I wasn't looking where I was going."
"Let's call it even," he said with a smile. "The name's Dr. Chris Ramsey."
"Impressive a doctor . . .wait, aren't you the guy who was involved with that DL something or other a few years ago?"
"Well, yeah, but that is all behind me," Chris explained, noticing the skeptical look on the young woman's face. "No really, I've straightened myself out. So are you going to tell me your name or am I going to have stalk you and find out," he joked.
"Funny, though a stalker is about the only thing not to happen to me . . .nah, my name is Elizabeth Webber, but you can call me Liz."
"Well, Liz, it is a pleasure to meet you. If you'd like I can still stalk you, just so you can say you've had it all."
"That would be fun, but instead we can make it more legitimate?" Liz suggested with a grin.
"Really, and what do you mean by that?"
"Well, I'm just getting over another divorce-I'm only 24 and I've been divorced twice, exciting I know-anyway, I could really use and impartial friend to talk to just when I don't feel like dealing."
"Dealing, dealing with what?"
"With everything. So, what do you say, would you like to get coffee sometime or maybe dinner? I have an in at Kelly's, we can get it on the house."
"Really? You get free food at Kelly's, how, unless you are close to the family they are pretty strict."
"Oh, that's just a fallacy. But I am tight with the owners."
"Luke and Bobbie Spencer, I know Bobbie. How do you know them?" he asked curiously, instantly attracted to the beautiful young woman before him.
"Luke's son, Lucky, he was my . . .technically boyfriend, but he was really so much more," she smiled fondly.
"I remember hearing about him, he died in that fire seven years ago, right?" Liz nodded, her eyes looking distant. "I'm sorry, forget I mentioned it. You know I have a knack for odd situations, it's a talent."
"Don't worry about it," Liz said kindly. "So, what do you say Dr. Ramsey, would you like to meet me for coffee tomorrow at Kelly's, sat at six?"
"I just met you, but you have kind eyes, why not?" Chris winked.
"Great, I'll look forward to it. Now I've got to go see Dr. Baldwin or I'm going to be late, bye," she waved and made her way down the hallway.
Chris's eyes followed her the entire way. For the first time since Eve married Scott, somebody else was occupying his thoughts. ~~~~~~
"And you're in love with her now?" Kevin asked.
"Hopelessly, Kevin what am I going to do? I won't hurt her, I won't stop her from being happy. If we can't be together the way I want it, I still want her in my life. I'm not going to lose her, she's one of the best friend's I've ever known."
"Tell her that. Exactly that, and then sit back and let her make her own decisions. If Liz wants to be with you, she will be. But if she is still in love with Lucky, Chris there is nothing you can do but give her your friendship and support."
"I can do that," Chris exclaimed confidently, jumping to his feet. "So how much do I owe you doc?" he said reaching for his wallet.
"Get the hell out of here Ramsey," Kevin laughed, pushing the doctor out of the door.
"I owe you one . . .if you ever need bypass surgery, I'm your man," Chris joked as he exited the office.
"Sonny, baby, are you home?" Carly called out as she entered the penthouse.
"I'm cooking," he yelled from the kitchen. Carly followed the scent of pasta sauce and saw her husband standing over a large pot. "What's wrong?" she asked. She knew Sonny so well that when he started cooking he was worried. "Is it about Lucky?"
"What? No, not Lucky, he's good news," Sonny smiled, kissing his wife hello. What was really bothering him he couldn't tell her. He and Jason had been holding their territory fairly easily, but Tony Moreno Jr, the original's son, was now pressing to take it all back. "How was your day? Have you and Liz moved forward on your design company?"
"Nothing yet, she's still reeling a bit . . . I can't stop thinking about her though and Lucky."
"I know what you mean. It's so . . .wonderful and yet shocking. It took me some time to come to grips with it, I don't know how she's handling it."
"Say that happened to us, I disappeared and you thought I was dead. What if I returned right when you thought you were strong enough to move on . . .would you take me back or no?"
Sonny thought for a moment and smiled. "I'd take you into my arms, lay one of my patented kisses on you and then take you up to our . . ."
"Sonny!" she yelped as he took her into his arms.
"What? Michael is hanging out with Jason today, no big deal," Sonny said with a grin.
"So, you'd forgive me for not telling you I was alive."
"Seriously, yes. I can understand what Lucky was doing. When I left Brenda, it killed me . . .but I did the right thing, in my heart I know it. What about you, would you forgive me?"
Carly pondered the question and looked up into Sonny's eyes. "Part of me wouldn't even have a second thought about taking you back. But part of me would be so hurt and bitter that I . . . I don't know. I just wouldn't want to be in Liz or Lucky's shoes right now. Promise me that'll never happen."
"I promise, I promise."
A year after Carly wed AJ, Keesha returned to Port Charles and AJ realized that he was fooling himself with the marriage. Carly also realized that she didn't love either Quartermaine brother. Her tempestuous relationship with Sonny erupted one day and before they knew it they were in love. They eventually married and shared custody of Michael with AJ quite amicably. Carly and AJ in fact became friends. Jason was still a big part of Michael's life, but he learned to accept that he was Michael's uncle. Jason had started dating and eventually married V. Jason, V, Carly, and Sonny were a close group of friends, four people nobody would expect to be close, let alone in the same room.
Liz sat down on the edge of the boxcar, and Lucky pulled himself along side of her. "The night of the fire I told everyone I knew you weren't dead. They said then it was all denial, I guess they were wrong," Liz spoke softly, smoothly. Lucky's eyes didn't leave her face. "But eventually I came to accept the fact that I would never have you back. I didn't learn that until two failed marriages and countless other screwed up relationships, but I figured it out. I had to live my life to honor you, not what I was doing. And you know what Lucky, I had finally reached that place. I'm not in love with Chris, but I do like him. He's a great guy. A lot like you actually, but he's not you. I learned that, I learned I'd never meet or have something as powerful as I had with you. And then, like some movie or a dream you walked into the club. All my dreams and all my fears and all the emotions I could ever experience hit me at once. And they haven't left Lucky. I still love you, there is no denying that. But I'm so damn confused. More than I've ever been. And I don't know why."
She turned and met his eyes. They stared into each other's eyes for what seemed like hours. Lucky brushed some hair from her face and moved closer. He could feel her breath on his face, like he had so many times. Lucky brushed his lips against hers, savoring the touch, the feel, the experience. Something he had dreamed of for ten years. Suddenly she pulled away. "I can't, not now, not yet . . ." she said before running off.
Lucky leaned against the wall and tightly closed his eyes. Thoughts and memories of his life with Liz floating like a dream. He needed her more than anyone knew, almost as much as the air he breathed.
Chapter 7
The night had passed and Lucky was still reeling from seeing Liz in the boxcar. He went to GH in hopes of finding Bobbie so he could explain his side of the story to her. He had already talked to Emily and she seemed rather understanding, though a little hurt. He knew his aunt would understand, she was a Spencer after all.
He stood at the Nurses Station, his eyes searching for her. "Can I help you?" a man asked from behind Lucky.
"No I'm just waiting for my . . ." he turned around and came face to face with Chris Ramsey.
"Lucky," Chris said flatly.
"Chris Ramsey, right?"
"Yeah, so who were you looking for?"
"My aunt, but . . ." he rubbed the back of his neck. The scene was filled with an awkward silence and neither man knew how to break it.
Luke stood behind the bar at the club, going over the books when the door swung open. "We're closed . . .ah but not for you," he smiled as he saw it was Liz. "How are you doing darlin'?"
"Not so good," she sighed as she sat down on a barstool. "Have you talked to Lucky at all?"
"Yesterday, we had a great talk actually. I explained my stuff, he explained his, kind of like the old times. You?"
"Last night, at the boxcar. It was so weird Luke. Everything about him is the same. His eyes, his smile, his voice even. But I felt nervous around him. Luke, I've never been nervous around Lucky, never. But last night as I talked to him . . . it wasn't like I was talking to someone else, but it was as if I didn't know him anymore. But everything he said to me was pure Lucky. I just don't . . . when you thought Laura was dead and she came back after being on the Cassadine island, how did you react?"
"You can't use my experience, no matter how much you want, you have to find your own way. But you will."
"How can you be so sure? I don't even know how or what I'm supposed to do. How am I supposed to? It is not like there is a book for people who lose loved one's only to have them suddenly return. If there is, I'd like one," she laughed. "But seriously, what am I supposed to do?"
"It's rather easy sweetheart . . .you love Lucky, right?"
"Of course."
"Well, you have to decide is that love stronger than the anger that is sitting in the pit of your stomach. You have to decide if your future together is more important than the past ten years. Once you figure that out, you'll be able to make sense of everything."
"It's really that easy?" she asked skeptically.
"It is," Luke smiled, pouring her a club soda.
Jason and Sonny stood in their warehouse going over some work orders when one of their men, Johnny, ran in nervously.
"Jason, Sonny, it's happening," Johnny said bluntly.
"What's happening?" Jason asked.
"Moreno is trying to take over, Moreno Jr that is," Johnny informed.
"How do you know this . . .it isn't possible, everything has been quiet for years . . .maybe too quiet," Sonny lamented.
"Our latest shipment was intercepted, plus our men have been threatened. I don't think we've even seen the beginning though. I don't know what he has planned, but he's twice as nuts as his father and just as smart."
"I want double guards on everyone. Don't forget the girls too, Emily and Liz must be protected. Nobody gets into the penthouse without showing some form of ID or unless I or Jason allow them. I want extra men at Jason and V's apartment, and I want a guard at the Q mansion because that is where Michael is today. Everything must be secured. I'll call a meeting with Tony Jr tomorrow," Sonny finished, his eyes steely and focused.
"This isn't good Sonny, this kid is a hot head and he probably holds us responsible for his father's death. He has to be stopped," Jason noted, pounding his fist down on the desk.
"You're right, no more are we going to take this lightly. We must stop this the only way possible," Sonny said coldly, knowing he had to do the one thing he hated more than anything.
Lucky and Chris stood silently staring at each other. "So, how are you doing now that your . . ." Chris began, but didn't know how to finish the sentence.
"I'm doing fine, it's good to be home. So, you're a doctor right? Didn't you win that Quartermaine thing at the Nurses Ball long ago?"
"Yeah, the Quartermaine residency, but it was revoked later on when they found out I took compromising photos of Matt Harmon and . . ." Lucky looked at Chris shocked. How could Liz even like a guy con artist, sleazbag like this?
". . .but that is all behind me now actually. I've become a rather respected physician and I'm no longer into conning or the easy way out. I guess you can say Liz helped me with that." Lucky nodded and forced a smile. "She's an amazing woman, she taught me so much . . ."
"I know what you mean."
Lucky nodded, not knowing what to say next.
"She loves you, you know that?" Chris spoke up. "She hasn't stopped. Her eyes light up when she talks about you. She's so special, I don't want her hurt."
"Don't worry Ramsey, I won't ever hurt Elizabeth again. I've already done that once, I will never do that again," Lucky said forcefully.
"I never said you would, I just mean she's been through so much already . . ."
"I know what you mean," Lucky's voice lowered as he tried to restrain himself from doing something wrong. He didn't hate Chris, he must be a decent guy for Liz to spend time with him, but he had an overwhelming urge to hit something, he didn't want it to be Chris.
"Lucky, or is it your ghost?" Nikolas's voice broke the silence as he stepped off of the elevator.
"Nikolas," Lucky called out, at first happy to see his brother, then distressed by the look on his face. "What's . . .what is the matter?"
"Sorry, but I've got to go," Chris noted. "I have to take my dinner break now, and then back for the late shift. It was nice meeting you Lucky." Chris shook Lucky's reluctant hand and the jumped in the elevator. Inside he took a deep breath, Lucky was certainly an interesting character.
"Nikolas, man, what's wrong?" Lucky called out as Nikolas began to leave.
"Sorry Lucky, I've got to go, I don't have time to explain it to you," Nikolas said bitterly.
"What the hell is wrong with you? What is this about?"
"What do you think it is about little brother? 'Hey, look at me, everyone who loves me thinks I'm dead-whoops, not so'" Nikolas mocked, staring coldly at Lucky.
"I don't have to explain myself to you Nikolas, but I had to stay away. I did it to save the people closest to me," Lucky shot back.
"Bull shit Lucky, you were just . . ."
"Just, just what Nikolas? You know I was right, so why is this bothering you?"
"Lucky, go back to Arizona, our lives were fine when you were there."
Lucky stopped Nikolas before he could leave, looking directly into his cold dark eyes. "Stop right there, what the hell is wrong with you man?" Lucky shot back.
"What's wrong with me? You know, you are so much like our mother . . .but so not in a good way," Nikolas's voice was full of anger and bitterness.
"Luke can I ask you one more thing?" Liz asked.
"Oh darlin', you can ask me anything."
"Does he seem different to you? I mean, even in the smallest ways, does he seem the least bit different?"
Luke thought for a moment and grinned. "Nah, not really. That boy . . .or man now, he's got the same indelible soul. Some things, some people never change. He's still loving, caring, and very noble. He may be a bit, oh, I don't know . . .tortured. His exile in Arizona had to be hard on him. Lucky is a very independent person, but he's got such a big heart, and not having anyone to love . . ." Luke shook his head, feeling for the loneliness he knew his son suffered for nine years.
"Luke, I hate myself for making this about me and my grief. I love him so much, and I know he must have had a hard time. But I'm having such a hard time forgetting what we all went through. What I did to myself, how I hurt so many people in my sick quest to replace him . . .I saw the pain in your eyes everyday for so many years. And everyone, the loss of Lucky was so great for all of us, he had to know. Even though he was alone, he still knew about us. But we . . .we didn't, Luke, we didn't," Liz was now crying freely. Luke slipped from behind the bar and held for support. He understood her pain, he witnessed what she did to herself, how she went through an endless cycle of pain and despair and attempts to find the impossible. He loved her like his own. Luke knew that the only way Lucky and Liz would ever be happy would be together. He only hoped that they would find their way together again, the way it was meant to be.
