Memories and Realities

Chapter 8-9

Chapter 8

Chris stood at the door of Liz's penthouse, his eyes narrowed and angry.

"Chris, hi . . .what's wrong?" Liz asked worriedly as she opened the door.

"What's with the goons getting all over me all of a sudden?" he asked somewhat miffed.

"Oh, I'm not sure, but Sonny has had security beefed up a bit for some reason . . .don't worry, you won't be hassled anymore, I'll make sure of it," she smiled, letting him in. "Not to sound rude, but is there a reason you are here?"

"Well, Liz . . ." Chris rubbed the back of his neck and forced a smile. "We've got to . . .we've got to talk."

"I figured as much. How about I get us a couple of cokes . . .or would you rather coffee?"

"Doesn't matter."

"I'll go get us something to drink and then we'll talk," she said softly. Liz made her way into the kitchen and passed the ever-present pictures. She looked at the picture of Lucky and shook her head. "What are you looking at?" she said to the photo with a laugh. "You've still got a hold on me, don't worry."

"So, are you just going to stand there, glaring at me Nikolas, or are you going to tell me why you are acting like the pompous ass hole I first met?"

"Cute Lucky, really cute."

"And what was that crack about our mother?" Lucky said bitterly.

"Well, she had a real knack for letting people think she was dead when she was perfectly alive. First everyone in Port Charles when I was born, then when you all cooked up that stupid plot . . .what was that all about, I forget . . ." Nikolas noted with a shrug of the shoulders. "Ah it doesn't matter, but I see you learned that exact talent from her. Good work little brother. Does it make you feel good that you made you mother, your father, your little sister, Liz . . .everyone, grieve for you? So, what exactly did you do in Arizona? Get a nice tan? Tell me?"

Lucky took a deep breath, holding in the rage that was building inside of him. "Do you not understand who Faison was? He was a psychopath, he was responsible for mom's death, he almost killed Elizabeth. . Nikolas it wasn't a choice of mine to stay away, it was the only way."

"When you came back Lucky, what exactly did you do? Please tell me, where did you go?"

Lucky sighed as his mind drifted back nine years when he returned to Port Charles. "Well, it was the day of the Nurses Ball . . ."

~~~~~~9 years earlier
Lucky hid behind the door to the kitchen at the Port Charles hotel. He couldn't believe he managed to make it back to Port Charles without one of Faison's men following him. More so, he couldn't believe how much time had passed since he was locked up. Since he had no calendar or clocks, Lucky had no way of telling how much time had gone by. "One whole year," he muttered to himself as he ventured from the kitchen and into the lobby of the hotel, a baseball cap-which he stole-with a Nurse Ball logo and a pair of sunglasses his only disguise. He stood in front of the sign advertising the seventh annual Nurses Ball and sighed. "One full year," he said to himself again.
Towards the front of the hotel, outside the entrance to the Versailles room, Lucky heard the commotion that could only be the guests arriving. He quickly moved to a corner of the room that was ensconced in shadow so he couldn't be seen. Lucky didn't know exactly what he was going to do. He understood Faison's threat if he tried to contact anyone. But he also knew he couldn't let them all think he was still dead.
His eyes grew wide as he saw familiar face after familiar face pass before him. First Bobbie and Jerry glided into the ballroom, terribly happy and oblivious to everyone else. Then Jason walked in, closely followed by an arguing Sonny and Carly. Not far behind them was Emily and a guy Lucky never saw before. He half expected to see Nikolas and Liz next, but no. Nikolas was next, but on his arm was Robin.
"Nikolas and Robin?" he smirked to himself. "At least he dumped Katherine."
His eyes searched for Liz, all he really wanted was to see her in the flesh one time. And then she appeared. Actually, then they all appeared. Luke walked in, flanked by Laura on his left and Liz on his right, Lulu in his arms. Lucky smiled, there they were, the most important people to him, all alive and safe and seemingly happy.
As Liz passed, Lucky tried to get a good look at her. Her beauty took his breath away, but her eyes . . .it was missing. The way they glowed and flashed, the happiness and warmth was gone. Lucky's heart broke as he realized she still hadn't healed. All the time he spent in his cell alone he hoped as hard as he could that Liz would find a way out, it pained him to see it still there, in her eyes.
Once the final guests made their way into the ballroom, Lucky made his way to one of the side doors and watched the evening's proceedings. All was right in Port Charles, the Nurses Ball was going on without a hitch, Lucy was hosting, his folks were together, Liz was even smiling a bit. Then the crowd got quiet as Lucy's speech turned quiet.
"Every year the Nurses Ball is held to raise money for the fight against AIDS, and every year we come another step closer to winning that fight . . ." Lucky smiled as he heard Lucy speak. He remembered Stone like it were yesterday, and he knew Robin very well, a cure for AIDS was something desperately needed. " . . .Last year, I made a glaring omission from my speech," Lucy sighed, snapping Lucky out of his thoughts. "We all lost somebody who was very dear and special to all of us. It wasn't to AIDS, but we still lost him. It's been a little over a year since the death of Lucky Spencer, and I'd like to take a moment of silence to remember the young, vibrant, and genuinely wonderful young man that graced this stage numerous times." Lucky's breath caught in his throat. He had to stop himself from jumping out of the shadows and letting everyone know he was alive, to stop grieving and start celebrating. But then the Faison's threats told him otherwise.
Lucky watched the rest of the evening's performances, laughing with the audience and actually enjoying everything. His body froze when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"What the . . ." his head snapped back and he looked the young man in the eye, the same young man who walked in with Emily.
"Not here . . ." he whispered, pulling Lucky out the door.
"What . . .what are you doing?"
"Do you have a ticket?"
"Are you security?" Lucky snapped.
"No, but this isn't a free show . . .and since you obviously aren't dressed for the occasion you are going to leave."
"What and miss Lucy ending up in her underwear, no thank you," Lucky laughed, only getting a stone-faced response from the guy in front of him. "You need to chill."
"I'm not going to tell you again . . .out or I will get security," Juan ordered.
"Fine, fine . . ." Lucky said, throwing his hands in the air, not wanting to give himself away yet. "I'm out of here." Lucky turned and walked straight through the front door of the hotel.
"Where did you go?" Emily asked as Juan returned to his seat.
"Ah nowhere, I just had to take out the trash," he joked, giving Emily a quick kiss.
Lucky had wandered the streets of Port Charles in virtual anonymity all night before returning to the seedy little hotel room he rented for the few dollars he managed to scrounge up. Lucky flopped himself down on the bed and flicked on the television. The news was on and he laughed.
"Figures, the first TV I'd watch in a year would be the news . . .I couldn't get lucky and catch a Seinfeld rerun."
"Now we go to Trey Barker at the scene of the accident," the anchor on the TV said.
Lucky slid off of the bed and moved to the window and stared out into the less than stellar view of an alley he had.
"Thanks Mindi . . .we still haven't gotten word exactly on what caused the accident. About twenty minutes ago there was a single car accident involving two females, the minute we have anymore information we'll pass it along . . ." Lucky heard the reporter say, only half interested in the report. The news carried on, weather, sports, then the reporter at the accident scene returned. "We have just received some more information on tonight's deadly car accident. There were two people, women, riding in the car at the time of the accident one dead the other in serious condition."
"Any names Trey?" the anchor asked.
"Yes, the deceased is a Mrs. Laura Spencer . . ." Lucky darted to the TV, his eyes instantly filled with tears.
"Mom!" he cried.
"And the other young woman involved is Elizabeth Webber, she has been taken to General Hospital in critical condition."
"Elizabeth," he whimpered, as they showed photos of Laura and then Liz.
"The police suspect no foul play, or intoxication. It is suspected that the women were driving and a deer jumped out in front of them, Mrs. Spencer swerved to miss it and the car rolled down an embankment . . ." were the last words Lucky heard.
His head began to spin. Lucky then heard a ringing. "The phone," he muttered, running over to it. "Yeah?"
"My dear boy, how was the Nurses Ball?" he heard Faison's evil accent and cringed.
"You . . .you . . ."
"What? I killed your mother? I know, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get Laura yet, I was hoping for your Elizabeth. But I guess this will work, no?"
"Go to hell!"
"Rather bitter I'd say. Oh well, now you know I know where you are at all times, and I follow through on my threats. Stay away Lucky or else?" Lucky then heard a click on the other end, his insides turning.
"Damn you Faison, damn you!" he screamed on the top of his lungs. He gathered his baring and headed to the hospital. He was going to somehow get an update on Liz's condition and then leave Port Charles for good. It was the only way he told himself, the only way to keep the one's he loved alive. ~~~~~~
"It's a nice story Lucky, really nice . . .too bad I don't care," Nikolas shot.
"You bastard, I should never have trusted you," Lucky said, and before he knew it, his fist had connected with his brother's jaw.
Luke tapped his foot along with the band that was playing at the club that night, not noticing when his teenage daughter walked in and sat down next to him.
"Dad! Hey, earth to dad!" she called out laughing.
"Lulu, baby doll what are you doing here, not that I'm complaining?" he smiled, giving his daughter a quick kiss.
"Dad, please, can't you call me Les?"
"Sorry sweetie, you'll always be my Lulu," he smiled. "So what do I owe this pleasure of seeing my girl?"
"Lucky," she said awkwardly.
"In that case, let's take it into my office." Once in his office Luke sat down, pouring himself a drink and tossing Les a bottle of water. "So, what do you want to know about Lucky?"
"I've been trying to figure out why . . .well, from everything I've ever been told about Lucky, he was so in love with Liz. So, if that is true, why would he let her, let alone you and mom, think he was dead. I just can't understand."
"Well baby, Lucky did love and does love Liz with everything he is, that'll never change. But to really say why he stayed away . . . it was something he had to do. He did it to save us from a man, who from what I've heard, wasn't just bad but a monster, pure evil. He surely would have harmed others if Lucky hadn't stayed away. But don't think for a moment he was on a vacation. Darlin', Lucky missed everyone very much, more than we know. If he could have, he would have returned to us sooner."
"You believe that?" Les asked hopefully.
"I know it," Luke nodded.
"Whoa," Jax shouted, jumping in between Lucky and Nikolas who were taking swings at each other.
"What is going on here?"
"I'm so sick of big blond guys stopping me from pounding this guy," Lucky shouted, referring to the Nurses Ball when Jason broke up a fight between the brothers.
"I can still wipe the floor with you Lucky," Nikolas shouted back.
"Don't be so quick to judge . . .try nine years of hard labor and then we'll see how tough you are."
"With all this testosterone flowing, I'm going to want to fight . . .now will someone tell me what is going on?" Jax ordered.
"None of your business Jax, it's a family matter," Nikolas said, still glaring at Lucky.
"Good ol' Nikolas thinks I was having a good time while I was away. He can't grasp, that I did it to save the lives of the people I love most. Then again Nikolas never did understand the easy things," Lucky explained sharply.
"There is always another way Lucky, you were just too much of a coward to think of one. You don't get it do you? I was the one who watched our mother have a break down over losing you, I saw Liz through her grief, I had to tell Les stories about you. Man, don't you get it? In your quest to save the people you love you just hurt them more."
"They would have been killed Nikolas, don't you get it! They would have died, just like our mother. It was my fault, my mother will never know I'm alive because of me, and me alone. Don't you think that's enough punishment? Who are you to hand out punishments anyway? It's my life Nikolas, and I made a decision, my decision and I've had to live it for nine years. I had to live with the death of my own mother, I had to live with not having my dad to talk to, and I had to live without the other half of my own heart. So if you want to know what my life was for ten years, I'll tell you. Nikolas it was utter hell, and I served my time, I served my penance, so just get the hell out of my face, cause I can't take anymore of your self righteous posturing."
Nikolas just stared at his brother, unable to say anything. It wasn't that he was really mad at Lucky, he felt robbed. Robbed of having his brother, they had finally become brothers and then it was all erased. He had messed up, and didn't know how to fix it. So instead of staying and talking it through, Nikolas turned on his heels and headed for his office, leaving Lucky in silence.
"Are you alright Lucky?" Jax asked, pointing to the small cut above his left eye that must have been caused by one of the punches Nikolas landed.
"Fine . . ." Lucky snatched his handkerchief from his back pocket and dabbed at the cut. "Sorry you had to witness that."
"Forget about it . . .Jerry and I used to fight in public all the time. Let it go."
"Sure," Lucky said halfheartedly as they walked over to the lounge. "So, congratulations are in order, I hear you are a new dad."
"Yeah, me and Chloe . . .do you know Chloe?"
"Uh huh, we actually met the night of the party in the hotel."
"Oh, well we had a baby boy, Jasper Jr. Everyone calls him JJ though. He looks just like his mother, want to see a picture?" Jax said enthusiastically.
"Sure," Lucky smiled. "Cute kid."
"Isn't he though," a proud Jax beamed.
"Is everything set for tonight?" a man in an expensive Italian suit asked into a phone. "Good, I want Corinthos and Morgan out of the picture. With them gone, taking over the territory will be easy. But if we can't get both, we settle for one. Understood? Good," Tony Moreno hung up the phone, a proud smile on his face.
"So boss, tonight we teach Corinthos and Morgan to never underestimate you, huh?" one of Moreno's men asked cockily.
"Of course, though it's a short course, one class and then the end," Moreno smiled as he pondered the future.
Chapter 9
"Liz, there is so much I have to tell you . . ."
"Go ahead, I can handle it," she said with a laugh.
Chris lost himself in her eyes for a moment before snapping back to
reality. "Just don't say anything till I'm done ok, I don't want to lose my
nerve."
Liz was about to say something but stopped herself and motioned for him to
go on.
"Well, the other night at the club, when I told you that I love you I meant
it. I do Liz, I've fallen in love with you. I know there is an age
difference, though it doesn't seem to matter to anyone, and I know we are
just friends. But I fell for you. Every time I see you or hear your voice
my knees become jello and I can't get you out of my mind. I don't know how
it happened. I didn't plan on falling in love. I thought my only chance for
love left me to be with Baldwin, but I was wrong. You are the woman I never
thought I'd meet. But . . .but I know what Lucky means to you, and what you
mean to him. I don't know what you plan to do, what decisions you plan to
make or have made. But I'm here to tell you, that whatever you decide, I'm
behind you. I'd rather have you as a friend than as nothing at all. You are
too important to me to not be in my life so . . ." Chris nodded his head
nervously. He rose to his feet and jammed his shaking hands in his pocket.
"I've got to put in a long shift tonight so night," he smiled. Unexpectedly
he moved forward, and took Liz's face in his hands. He slowly placed a
gentle kiss on her lips before dashing out the door without another word.
Liz stood motionless, overtaken by what had happened. Chris had just
revealed his deepest feelings to her, and then he kissed her. They had
kissed a few times before so it didn't surprise her too much. What
surprised her was the way it made her feel. She took a deep breath and
touched her lips, before moving her eyes to her ring. Her decision was now
clear, she knew who she was to be with.
Chris stood in front of the elevator, his mind still on Liz. As the doors
opened, Lucky stepped out and the two men came face to face again.
"Ramsey."
"Lucky."
"What are you doing here?" Lucky asked.
"I was talking to Liz, you?"
"She lives there . . ." Lucky remembered with a smile. He remembered
finding out, though how he couldn't remember, that Emily and Liz moved in
together when Jason and V got a place of their own. "I'm here to talk to
Sonny."
"I've got to head to work, I'll see you around I guess," Chris noted and
stepped into the elevator.
Lucky walked to the door of Sonny's penthouse, just as Johnny was about to
open it for him Carly came bounding out. "Lucky!" she exclaimed, giving him
a hug. "What are you doing here?"
"I want to talk to Sonny, is he home?"
"Yeah, he's watching TV believe it or not . . .something's on his mind, he
only watches TV when he's worried about something," Carly noted with a laugh.
"Where are you heading?"
"Oh, just over to see Liz . . .want to come?" she suggested.
"Maybe later, I think I need to give her some space right now, besides I
really want to talk to Sonny," Lucky smiled, squeezing his cousin's hand
lovingly. "Put in a good word for me."
"I will," she laughed and headed across the hall.
Lucky walked in the penthouse to see Sonny watching a movie on TV. He
walked up behind Sonny and began to laugh at what he was watching. " 'Beach
Blanket Bingo'? Sonny, I didn't know that was your style man," Lucky said
through laughs.
"You little rat!" Sonny called out, jumping over the couch and nearly
tackling Lucky. "Who let you in here? I'm going to fire him," Sonny teased,
giving Lucky a hug. "What are you doing here Lucky?"
"Can't I visit an old friend?" Lucky smiled.
"What's wrong kiddo?" Carly asked as she walked into the penthouse and saw
Liz curled up on the couch, a million thoughts obviously racing through her
mind.
"Oh, nothing, everything . . . Carly how am I going to break his heart? I
can't do it, I just can't," she sighed.
"Who's heart?" Carly asked nervously, routing for Lucky to finally be with
Liz.
"Chris," Liz sighed, causing Carly to let out the breath she was holding
in. "You thought I was going to say Lucky?"
"Well . . . I didn't know," Carly laughed. "So does this mean you want to
be with Lucky again, pick up where you left off ten years ago? Cause I can
verify, he is sill madly in love with you."
"Yes . . . I know it won't be easy, and we still have some stuff to work
through. But Carly, I can't be away from him any longer. He's the one
person that makes me feel . . ." she sighed happily.
"What made you come to this decision?"
"Earlier, Chris came over and told me how he feels about me. He was real
sweet, and any woman would be nuts to turn him down but . . .when he kissed
me I felt . . .it was nice, don't get me wrong. But I didn't get that
overwhelming, knee-weakening, total connection when we kissed. But
yesterday, when Lucky kissed me . . ."
"Wait, back up. When did Lucky kiss you?"
"Yesterday . . . I was feeling restless and went for a walk, before I knew
it I was in the woods by the boxcar . . .do you know that Lucky lived there
summer of 98?"
"Yeah, Bobbie told me about it, he was having problems with his parents and
all."
"Well, he lived there, I practically lived there. Our time spent in the
boxcar was amazing, it was magical. So sometimes I just find myself there
and I also found Lucky. We talked, he tried to explain everything and
before I knew it he was kissing me. I freaked though, it was all too much
to take in so I took off. But you know what, it was still there. Lucky can
still make me feel . . ." she sighed, a happy smile on her face.
"So, am I really a bad, awful person for doing what I did?" Lucky asked
Sonny seriously.
"Not at all Lucky, you did what you had to do. When I left Brenda at the
altar, I did it because in my heart I knew that was the right decision. She
wasn't happy about it, it didn't make me feel good, but it was right. And I
can tell that what you did was the only thing you could fathom doing. Son,
you did the right thing, you protected your family and the woman you love
from that monster," Sonny said easing Lucky's mind.
"So, what have you been up to since I've been gone, how did you and Carly
come about?" Lucky asked with a laugh.
"Just one of those freaky things that happen by chance. One minute I was
hating her schemes and games and the next . . ."
"Madly, deeply in love," Lucky finished. "It wasn't that drastic with me
and Elizabeth, but one minute we were just friends and then . . . I need
her back man, my life isn't complete without her. It could never be."
"I don't know what to tell you Lucky. I'm not going to give you some sappy,
if it's meant to be it's meant to be speech. Because you know what? I
thought Brenda and I were supposed to be. But I will tell you not to sit
around and wait, if you want her, if you love her, go and get her."
"That's just not my style, I can't push her. All I want is for her happiness."
"At the expense of your sanity?" Sonny asked, playing devil's advocate.
"My sanity was shot years ago Sonny, and I'd gladly sell it again for her
safety."
Sonny smiled. "My boy, everything will work out, I've got a feeling about
these things."
"I thought you weren't going to give me one of those speeches?" Lucky
asked, rising to his feet to leave.
"Get out of here, go get some sleep you look tired," Sonny observed.
"I'll see you around, thanks for the talk," Lucky smiled and stepped out of
the apartment and made his way to the elevator.
As the doors to the elevator closed Carly and Liz stepped into the hallway.
"He should be over with Sonny, so what are you going to say?" Carly prodded
a beaming Liz.
"I don't know . . . I will when I see him though," Liz said as they walked
over to Carly and Sonny's penthouse.
"Baby, is Lucky still here?" Carly asked Sonny who had resumed his spot in
front of the television.
"No, he actually just left, just missed him," Sonny noted as he turned off
the TV. "Why?"
"Liz wants to talk to him," Carly smiled, exchanging a knowing look with
her husband.
"He just got in the elevator, I'm sure you can catch him, he shouldn't be
gone yet," Sonny said as he and Carly walked Liz to the elevator. "What are
you doing?" he asked his wife.
"I'm going down, I want to see this," she whispered, getting a look from
Sonny. "What, Johnny can see it and we can't?"
"Get in," Liz yelled with a laugh.
Downstairs Lucky was standing outside of the building talking to Johnny. "I
can't believe you are the same skinny kid I had to drive to the No Name?
You look good Lucky," Johnny smiled.
"Thanks."
A block away in a dark car with tinted windows a man practiced taking aim
with his gun. They pulled up to the penthouse building. "Boss, I think I
have a clear view on Morgan-it's dark, but it looks like him."
"Do your job," the man on the other end of the speakerphone ordered. The
window to the car slid down and the gunman took aim.
"Move it!" Johnny yelled as he saw the car pull up.
At the same moment, Liz, Carly, and Sonny stepped off of the elevator.
Lucky smiled at the threesome and then turned to see what Johnny was
yelling at.
Suddenly gunshots awakened the night air. Bullets and glass littered the
air as the targets dove to the ground. And as quickly as it all happened,
everything was silent once again.
