The Return - Chapter 12

by: Roy

Elizabeth ran to the door when she heard the car. As soon as Taggert stopped, Lucky was out of the car, up on the porch and through the door to her. She threw herself into his arms. He swung her around and then kissed her. “See, I told you it would be fine.” He beamed at her, so glad to be back with her. “Hey, you look beautiful.” She beamed up at him as well.

Taggert and Dara had made it up to cabin. Felicia was surprised to see Dara. “Got to keep the DA apprised of the situation, you know,” said Taggert. Felicia offered them lunch and then hastily headed out. She was anxious to get to the hospital. Noticing that Lucky and Elizabeth obviously didn’t want company, Taggert ushered Dara back to the kitchen.

Lucky was still holding Elizabeth as Felicia left. She smiled at their obvious love for one another. It was the real thing; she was sure of it. Finally Liz pulled away and led Lucky over to the couch. “Tell me everything,” she ordered. Lucky gave her a quick run down on what had happened. Her eyes widened in amazement.

“Thank God you’re safe,” she whispered. So many things could have gone wrong. It petrified her to think of it all.

“So what did you do while we were gone?” Lucky smiled at her.

“Felicia got hold of your dad. He’s in Switzerland. It sounds like we’ll be flying over to see him. Mac apparently thinks that Faison will contact him or something.”

“Mac’s right. Faison didn’t tell me much, but his kidnapping me had something to do with Dad.” Lucky agreed with Mac’s thinking. He was also looking forward to letting his dad know that he was alive. He was lost in thought for a moment. Elizabeth snuggled in beside him.

After several minutes, Elizabeth sat up. “Look what I found.” She got up and walked over to a guitar she had noticed propped in a corner. “Dr. Collins must have put that there just for you.” She picked it up and handed it to Lucky. He took it and started strumming.

“I listened to my song every night before I went to sleep,” Elizabeth sat down next to Lucky. “Just hearing your voice, even on tape, made me feel better.”

“It was playing when I climbed into your room last night,” Lucky was stilled amazed at that. After fiddling around with some chords for a few minutes, he rolled into the opening chords of “Elizabeth”. She looked at him and smiled.

“Elizabeth. Go to sleep…” Lucky started singing her song, his eyes never leaving hers.

Out in the kitchen, Taggert notices the guitar music coming from the living room. He and Dara peek at the young couple, so obviously in love. “Not that is what I call true love,” remarked Taggert.

“That’s what I call young love,” Dara sighed. “They don’t have a clue how complicated life can get.”

“How can you say that? They’ve survived a rape, a trial of that rapist, and then a supposed ‘death’. I’d say they know plenty of life. They made it by keeping their eyes on each other and not letting anything else get in the way.” Taggert wanted his words to drive home a message to Dara.

“Yeah, but I still say they don’t have a clue about life.”

“All I want is this Elizabeth…” Lucky finished the song. Elizabeth sighed. She could listen to him sing forever. Lucky put the guitar back in its place and then turned on the radio. Much to their surprise they heard the introduction to “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You”. Lucky looked at Liz. A ‘must dance’! She was immediately up and in his arms. They slowly moved to the music. Nothing else in the world mattered or existed to them—just each other and the music.

From the other room Taggert and Dara continued watching them. “It’s true love, I tell you, “ said Taggert as he took Dara in his arms and they danced as well.
