Title: A Little Night Music
Author: Theresa G.
Background: This takes place after "On the Edge" and "The Manhattan Project."
Joey ran away to New York with Anderson after she saw Jen kiss Dawson, not
knowing it was completely one-sided. And once again, this series is completely
unrealistic, but it's fiction and it's mine :)
Disclaimer: As always, I do not own DC or its characters, they belong to Kevin
Williamson, yada yada. The song "Always" is by Bon Jovi.
Pacey and Dawson took a cab over to the Crawford mansion, and were immediately overwhelmed by the very sight of it. "This kid certainly doesn't have to worry about a part-time job. Or allowance. Or much else in life," Pacey said, shaking his head. "Come on, let's go in," Dawson grabbed him. Suddenly he heard Joey and Anderson coming out the door. He ran around the side of the house so that they wouldn't see him.
"Dawson, what are you doing? Go talk to her!" Pacey said.
"SHHH!" Dawson demanded. "It's not the right moment. Besides, I want to listen and find out where they're going." Pacey sighed in exasperation. "SHH!" "So, have you ever been to one of these amateur concerts?" Dawson heard Joey ask. "A few. They're usually pretty good, but I only go because James makes me." "Well, I hope there's some good acts tonight. Let's get to the park!" she said as they walked away. Pacey glanced over at Dawson, who had an evil smile playing on his lips.
"Dawson? Man, what are you doing?" "Let's go to a concert, Pace," Dawson grinned.
As soon as they got to the park, Dawson left Pacey with a cryptic "I'll meet you back here later, but you'll see me sooner."
Pacey strolled slowly around the park, listening to the performers half-heartedly. "Pacey?" he heard a soft voice call. He turned quickly around at the familiar voice. "Tamara," he said quietly in disbelief. He ran over and hugged her. "I missed you," he said when they finally separated. "I missed you, too, Pacey," she smiled. "How is everything? Better?"
"Not really, but I survive," he grinned. "So I thought you were in Rochester?" "I am, I'm just visiting some family in the city. My niece is performing," she added, with a nod to the stage. Pacey looked in surprise. He had almost forgotten there were other people here. "So, any luck with the girls, Pacey?" Tamara grinned.
Pacey turned to her seriously. "Only you."
"Don't worry, Pacey. There will be plenty of girls in line to date you. Even some sitting in the desk next to you and not in front of the class," she said, almost wistfully. "There's only one like that, although not many can compare to that one in front of the class," he said as he smiled charmingly.
Tamara smiled, but asked, "Are you planning on asking this girl out?" Pacey laughed. "I doubt it, Tammy. She's going out with my best friend." "You always did like the tough ones, Pacey." "They're the best kind," he nodded. "Actually, I'm here to help my best friend get her back . I must be crazy..." he trailed off as he looked at the stage. "But NOT as crazy as that man on stage!" Pacey smiled.
Sure enough, Dawson had signed up for amateur night and jumped on-stage. "Hey there, my name's Dawson," he began. Joey's head snapped up. What the hell was he doing!? "Dawson, what are you doing here!?" Joey shouted. "I'd like to dedicate this song to my best friend in the world, Joey Potter. Joey, I hope you get my message here," he smiled.
"Great, he came all the way over here to sing me a break-up song or something?!" Anderson recognized the first notes of the song the designated musicians were playing. "I wouldn't be too sure about that, Joey," he said as Dawson closed his eyes and began to sing:
*This Romeo is bleeding
But you can't see his blood
It's nothing but some feelings
That this old heart kicked up
It's been raining since you left me
Now I'm drowning in the flood
You see I've always been a fighter
But without you, I give up
Well, I can't sing a love song
Like the way it's meant to be
Well, I guess I'm not that good anymore
But, baby, that's just me
Yeah, I will love you, baby
Always
And I'll be there
Forever and a day
Always
Now the pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh, some that made us cry
One that made you have to say good-bye
What I'd give to run my fingers through your hair
Touch your lips, to hold you near
When you say your prayers, try to understand
I've made mistakes, I'm just a man
When he holds you close, when he pulls you near
When he says the words you've been needing to hear
I wish I was him, cuz those words are mine
To say to you, till the end of time
Yeah, and I will love you, baby
Always
And I'll be there
Forever and a day
Always
If you told me to cry for you, I could
If you told me to die for you, I would
Take a look at my face, there's no price I won't pay
(Dawson opens his eyes and stares straight at Joey...)
To say these words to you
Well, there ain't no luck in these loaded dice
But, baby, if you give me just one more try
We could pack up our old dreams and our old lives
We'll find a place where the sun still shines
Yeah, and I will love you, baby
Always
And I'll be there
Forever and a day
Always
I'll be there till the stars don't shine
Till the heavens burst
Till the words don't rhyme
I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
And I'll love you
Always*
Dawson reached out his hand as he sang the last verse. Joey looked at Anderson, who nodded in understanding. Pacey stared at Tamara, then back to Joey as she jumped on-stage to join Dawson. Tears fell freely down her smiling face as she stared happily at Dawson. Dawson held the microphone to his lips, "I love you, Joey. Take me back?"
The audience waited in anticipation. Joey laughed and simply kissed him passionately in response. Profuse cheers spread through the park as they watched the couple reunite. Dawson and Joey whispered I love you's to each other until they were finally ushered off the stage, reminded that there were a few more performers.
"Geez, I don't know how I can follow that!" the next musician said as he hopped on-stage. Joey and Dawson walked hand in hand over to Anderson. Joey and Anderson just smiled at each other in silent apology and understanding. She hugged him good- bye, and kissed him on the cheek, thanking him emphatically for bringing her to New York.
A few feet away, Pacey realized that he was leaving. He stared sadly into Tamara's eyes. "I guess I have to be leaving now. It's not fair," Pacey sighed, as he said those words for what seemed like the thousandth time in his life.
"Life isn't fair, Pacey, you'll learn that. But you'll do fine, I can tell. You'll do great things," she said as she squeezed his hands in hers. "That's why I loved you, Tammy. You were the only one who actually believed in me."
"I still do, Pacey. Maybe I'll see you again sometime."
They shared one last bittersweet kiss, and Pacey walked away to join Dawson. Dawson saw who he'd been talking to, and placed a comforting hand on his arm. "Don't worry, Pace. You'll find someone else and be as happy as I am," he smiled, staring at Joey.
"Hey, enough about me, Dawson Bon Jovi," Pacey joked to lighten the mood. "Wait, till the school hears how the ever-melodramatic Dawson Leery won back his lady love. I'll make sure they're all screaming for an encore performance."
"You wouldn't!"
"Ah, but wouldn't I?" he grinned. Dawson and Joey laughed and walked ahead. Pacey's grin faded as he lagged behind. "Find someone else, he says. Dawson, my man, you don't know how very lucky you are." Pacey said to himself, as he thought, Life just stopped being so simple.
The End ... unless you want me to continue with some Pacey story, which means
you're gonna have to e-mail me and tell me what you want to see! I tried to
make this one for the D/J fans though. K, that's all, hope you enjoyed!
