It was a storybook case of love at first sight for Cole and Caitlin - and the young lovers wasted no time in admitting how they felt about each other. Unfortunately happily ever after isn't always as it should be. The trouble began when Caitlin brought her new love home to meet her family. Her dad, Gregory discovered that in Cole's past he had been an international jewel thief who come to Sunset Beach to claim the Deschanel jewels which happened to have been willed to Olivia, Caitlin's mother. Gregory assumed Cole was only after Caitlin's money and the Deschanel jewels. As for Caitlin's mother, Olivia: To her horror, she realized that her daughter's love was the same guy that she had an affair with weeks before. Although Cole and Olivia didn't know each others identities when they slept together and Cole and Caitlin had separated, they decided to keep this secret to themselves. Meanwhile, Caitlin has a little secret of her own. She suffered a miscarriage and was pretending to be pregnant. Not only that, but it's just Cole's luck that Olivia was pregnant too... and it could be his. This gets worse! Caitlin went so far in her desperate attempt to hide her pregnancy that she enlisted Annie Douglas' help to obtain a baby to pass off as Cole's. Annie, having an agenda of her own decided to make Olivia go into premature labor and take her baby, tell her it was dead, and give it to Caitlin. Did this work? So far, yes. Caitlin is now unknowingly passing off her brother as her son, which could actually be Cole's son, Caitlin's brother, and step-son! Sick, I know. This is one huge bombshell waiting to explode! Despite the lies, Cole and Caitlin do love each other. They finally tied the knot in February of 1998. Cole has changed his "bad boy" ways and has turned over a new leaf for the one he loves. Caitlin on the other hand, changed for the worse and began to lie to her husband.
Cole and Caitlin's nuptials marked SUNSET BEACH's first "successful" wedding: Though the show has been on for over a year now, no other couple has quite made it to the altar. Meg and Tim came closest, but on the wedding day, Meg found out that Tim had slept with Connie, Meg's maid-of-honor. Not that the Deschanel union wasn't rife with close calls; Just before the wedding, the pregnancy padding Caitlin wore began to slip out of her dress, but Annie created a distraction and it no one discovered a thing. Cole nearly came clean about all his dirtly little secrets, but fear of losing Caitlin forever changed his mind. Between Father Antonio's sermon about truth and honesty in marriage, and Cole's sincere vows, Caitlin was just about ready to unravel her secret as well, but figured living with the guilt and Cole would be better than living alone, thus Caitlin and Cole entered their marriage complete with a stash of secrets.
THE WEDDING VOWS Below are Cole and Caitlin's Wedding Vows: Cole: "Before I met you, Caitlin, my life was empty and aimless. I moved around, looking for adventure and money and never really caring about anybody but myself. Then I came to Sunset Beach and found you, my angel. Suddenly, my life had meaning and purpose, and I learned the true meaning of happiness. And when I found out that you were carrying our child, that made everything just perfect, and I realized what having a family would be to me. I realized I wouldn't be happy until you and I were one. For me, Caitlin, marriage is being the best husband, the best father, the best person that I can be every day that we're together, always. I love you. I love you with all of my heart. I can only hope that I can prove myself worthy." Caitlin: "I prepared my own vows as well, but after hearing yours - which were so beautiful, and so heartfelt - mine just don't seem right anymore. It's time you all knew the truth. When I wrote my vows earlier...(Caitlin hesitates when she hears a baby crying in the church. She decides not to confess her lie)... I tried to picture how I would feel standing up here with you, about to commit myself to you, for life. But nothing I imagined prepared me for this moment - the love I feel for you. None of the words I planned seem right. I could never describe to you or my friends or family how much you mean to me; you're more than a dream come true, Cole. You're my heart, my soul, my life." Caitlin: "With this ring, I thee wed. Through good times and bad, my love for you sustaining us both, never dying, always growing." Cole: "With this ring, I thee wed. A circle of love burning brightly. I will always protect you and cherish you." |

Other obstacles were also heading their way into Sunset Beach. Cole's former flame, Francesca Vargas swooped into town after Shockwave and had her sights set on getting Cole for herself. She made huge waves in Cole and Caitlin's relationship and would stop at nothing to win Cole's heart again. Caitlin kept the truth about Trey from Cole and thought her secret was safe, until Gregory (her father discovered the that Trey was really his son. Gregory plotted against his own daughter until the pressure became too much and Caitlin was backed into a corner - and into telling Cole the truth. She confessed to her husband that the son they had been raising was really not his son at all. Cole was devastated and walked out on Caitlin. Francesca was also still on the prowl for information to break-up Cole and Caitlin for good, when she stumbled upon information about Cole and Olivia's affair. Francesca used this information to her advantage and maybe even her deathbed. She told Caitlin that Olivia and Cole had an affair, which drove Caitlin off of her rocker. She was completely devastated - and ended up in the hospital due to the pressure. Caitlin did get out of the hosptial and confronted both Olivia and Cole about the affair. She told both of them that she hated them and they were no longer a part of her life. All the lies had come out, and Cole and Caitlin's marriage has been shattered - and Francesca has been Murdered! Did Cole or Caitlin murder Francesca in a fit of rage? Will they ever be able to pick up the pieces of their shattered marriage? Stay tuned to Sunset Central for more! |
