Well, I'm back from a little winter break. But I've got some real cool stuff--mostly merchandise stuff actually. First the other news though. Thanks to elwood blues, we have a new possible title for 7X11: "Sein Und Zeit: 74." Is it me or is 1013 having a hard time naming this one? The number 74 is apparently found on a note left by one of the kidnapped girls. A weird title anyway if it's real. In Hannibal news, Jodie Foster declined her role, making Gillian Anderson a real possibility, although Priscilla Barnes is also up for the role. Ridley Scott is set to direct the film! Steve Zaillan wrote the script. Also "The Unnatural" will be the rerun for January 30. And the awesome Dennis X has given me the title of the last episode of Harsh Realm to be fully produced, Episode 8, 1ADC07, 1H07: "Camera Obscura." It means "Dark Room" in Latin. Speaking of which, Fox has offered full credit to James Hudnall and Andrew Paquette for HR--presumably to take effect for the showings in March, and if the show is renewed. Finally in "The Amazing Maleeni" Mulder and Scully "investigate the bizarre death of a magician" (Skinner is not in the ep) and in "Signs and Wonders" we find Mulder "collapsed from snake bites"; M&S investigate "a series of deaths involving rattlesnakes and religious worship" (official summaries).

Now the merchandise news. There is a great XF merchandise site, called The X-Files Merchandise Web Site, where I got the following information and pictures with permission. The international "Biogenesis" video will include a behind-the-scenes interview with Mitch Pileggi. It comes out in Australia on January 12. The Screendragon promo CD that I have mentioned before, given out in Australia, was only available at HMV stores from August 11-18, 1999. Here is a much better picture than the one I have. One of the prizes for an Australian contest was a mousepad promoting the Special Edition movie videos (no picture). This is a flyer from HMV for the Special Editions. Here is a better picture of the Scully puzzle card that comes with the Special Editions, and here are two promo slips for the Scully card: 1 and 2. Here is apparently the rarest XF video in existence, an Australian rental dealer preview edition. This here is a pic of both versions of the Australian Special Edition video, that is, with and without the 30-minute making-of special. Here is a pic of the Australian rental video and here is the back of the Video CD version of the movie (and here are the CDs themselves). I already got a pic of the front, and of the bootleg in the Movie Merchandise section. But some great news is that another X-Files CD is coming out, on CD, tape, plus a single with the theme on it! Hopefully more info soon.

The BBC is repeating episodes shown Wednesdays on the Saturdays following, starting January 8 with 6X01. Apparently season 6 will be shown in widescreen. And: "Both Benson's World (www.bensonsworld.co.uk, phone 020 8960 4868) and Home Entertainment (01282 616666) have offers to buy both "Biogenesis" and the Season 6 Collector's Box for £80 (a savings of £15)." Thanks David Yeldon! Finally season 7 will start in March on Sky One.

One last weird thing to end the update. According to The Metro News, a U.K. paper, on Dec. 21, GA gets nightmares from TXF. She apparently couldn't handle filming one scene with an abandoned hospital or something and a dead body in it covered with maggots. Is this an upcoming episode or an old one? I can't seem to recall a scene like that.

The 3 big news bits today all involve Gillian Anderson. First, she was in story meetings all last week working on a script with the writers! Second, go to the official site for a holiday surprise. (Apparently the "Orison" trailer was up for about 10 minutes but is gone.) The site was updated Monday, and again today for the holiday surprise. Other than the surprise there's not that much new stuff but still worth a look. And third, she is being considered for the role Jodie Foster played in The Silence of the Lambs, in the sequel, Hannibal, also starring Anthony Hopkins as in the first movie. If Jodie Foster doesn't approve the script soon, Gillian will probably get the role, and has likely agreed to do it if Foster doesn't come through--she would play an FBI agent investigating a serial killer, nothing new (except maybe the accent)! On to other news.... As of Monday the cast and crew are on winter hiatus, in the middle of filming "X-Cops." In Harsh Realm news, I found out that 1H08 was titled "Circe" and was in preproduction when the show was canceled. The episode was never filmed. And according to TomBli, production of the next XF movie started a month ago--I assume that to be preproduction in the form of story meetings. Speaking of XF movies, FTF will screen soon in Australia on the pay channel Showtime.

On to some merchandise news. I failed to mention that The End and the Beginning: The Official Guide to The X-Files is coming out on February 3 and is not out already. The international video of the last 3-parter has been renamed from "The Syndicate" to "Biogenesis" appropriately. That and the following info thanks to David Yeldon. The movie DVD in the U.K. is being released a week earlier, January 24. No word on extras. Price is £25 ($35). "Biogenesis" will cost £15 and the season 6 collector's box will cost £80 (both to be released on Feb. 7). Finally, the BBC will start airing season 6 on January 5 (only 5 eps will air before the season 6 box comes out!), and Sky One will start season 7 in the spring. On December 26 reruns are starting again on Sky; on that day two season 4 episodes will air.

The season 1 DVD set has been officially announced by Fox. Some corrections and additions to previous info: It is made by Image Entertainment, it is 1104 minutes long in total, it is classified under "TV Classics," the prebook date for stores is April 4, and there are English and French Dolby Surround tracks and English and French subtitles (no Spanish). The DVD-ROM content includes games plus paranormal and alien-abduction trivia plus Web links. And 3 new XF novelizations came out: Grotesque, Quarantine ("F. Emasculata"), and Regeneration ("Leonard Betts"). The thing is, I thought these books were out already; possibly they were just rereleased. The latter is in hardcover.

Two last things. First, Tiny Dancer's site is fully up (except seasons 3 and 4 plus the Sound Gallery, to be up soon), at the old address and also at The Ultimate X-Files Information Complex under Opinions. The direct link is here. Finally, I would like everyone to support mulderitzmi's campaign to get XF some awards--I was so disappointed that XF got 0 nominations for the Golden Globes. So here's the info:

"I can't be sure this will be handled just like last year, but just in case you aren't familiar with how this was set up last year...you could only obtain a ballot [for the TV Guide Awards] by purchasing the TV Guide (this coming year, for the weeks of January 8 [on sale the 3rd] and January 15 [on sale the 10th], the awards on March 5), which is a pretty cagey way to get people to buy your wares, I admit. They also had it set up so that you could send in as many ballots as you like...so you can buy as many magazines as you can afford, of course. By entering your name and address on the ballot (not required), you enter yourself into a contest to win a trip to the awards ceremony. In case you missed this too, the fans themselves were seated along the runways the stars walked down to get their awards, and the fans were all seated up close to the stage...the stars had to sit in the back. :) This was cool, I thought. Now, they did have online balloting too, for the more superfluous awards...like best hair (doesn't EVERYONE have a bad hair day now and then?), sexiest male, sexiest female, etc., but you have to buy the mag to get a vote in for the majors. (At last check, I saw no news of the online balloting on their site, but I'll keep checking.) The magazine ballots had picks on them, but you were also allowed write-ins. I certainly hope we won't need to remind them who the best is by writing in 'David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, or X-Files' in any category, but at least there's that option. I've learned not to let anything surprise me in TV Land anymore. The Globes broke my heart yesterday. :("

There's been a lack of updates (busy week), but there hasn't been much news at all. The one thing that is significant is the following:

"Pixel Envy (Santa Monica) completed the visual effects work on the eighth [1H07] and final episode of Chris Carter's Harsh Realm. The show was canceled by Fox after three episodes, but the initial eight episodes were picked up by the FX network to air in March. While no extra shows are currently scheduled for production, FX is considering a possible continuation, a source said."

Yeehaw! In other news.... An X-Phile went to a filming location for "X-Cops" and talked to some of the makeup people. Apparently they were confident that there would be an 8th season with CC, DD, and GA.... Plus apparently David Duchovny was going to direct "X-Cops" instead of Michael Watkins! The final Nielsen ratings for "The Goldberg Variation" were 8.8/13 household, tied #17 for the week. There were 14.49 million total viewers, tied #11 for the week. A summary of 7X13: "The Gunmen bring Mulder and Scully in on this case of software gone bad. Lots of geek testosterone in this one. A cyberbabe wreaks havoc on a first-person shooter game's development." The XF movie DVD will come out in January in Australia. Plus there will be "some exciting new changes coming very soon" to the official fan club's Vault. No idea what they could be. And go to this site for information on ordering a documentary film on...X-Philes. Sounds very interesting. Three more things and that's it for the random blurbs: Here are pictures of the back of the box for the Dark Horse Scully and Mulder statues. Click here to bid in an auction for the script for "Sein Und Zeit," airing in February! Apparently this is the 2nd "blue" draft; the first was written only by Chris Carter! Finally Mitch Pileggi did the voice for one of the characters in the RPG (computer game) Planescape: Torment.

Two new bits of title info: 7X12 is now "X-Cops," and 7X11 is going to be renamed from "Sein Und Zeit: Aliatope" (1013 probably realized that the title makes no sense in any language ;-) ). More on "X-Cops": It is being filmed (sorry, taped), starting today, on Betacam 600 video cameras. "To get the feel of Cops, makers of [TXF] are getting advice from the experts, with Cops executive producer John Langley signed on as a consultant for the episode. Additionally, X-Files writer Vince Gilligan went on several ride-alongs with actual Cops crews to research the show." Coool! Anyway, the Lone Gunmen aren't in 7X10 or 7X11 at all--but we know they'll be in 7X13. Plus the Beastie Boys rumor could still be valid, but I have confirmed that they are not the subject of 1013's movie project. Some of the above info I got from the official site, updated on a Tuesday! I'm really impressed with the site, it's great.

elwood blues told me that Daniel Sackheim will be directing 7X15--or no episode at all. Plus he believes the rumor of Chris Carter directing the final episode. Anyway, Tiny Dancer's site is being relocated to The Ultimate X-Files Information Complex at Fandom, and will be up tomorrow. For now, click on News on the left then Opinions at the top to go to Tiny Dancer's section. Now the following info was given to me by my partner in crime Sang, who says it's from a Korean site. The rumor is that David Duchovny will be in a Korean gangster action flick, shot mostly in L.A. Most likely a small part or cameo, done for the fun of it. The movie is called No Mercy, and the appearance is supposed to be uncredited and kept secret. This would be very interesting. Now, Jason sent me this print ad for the U.K. mail-order "Dreamland" video, confirming all the info I put here a while ago. Finally, "The Goldberg Variation" came back in the ratings, earning a preliminary 11/16. This is one of the best ratings this season. I liked the episode very much, and was surprised by how different the ep was from normal XF fare. It was very interesting and clever and original--Bell's best so far, by far. The Chicago setting and Mafia guys were also new and refreshing. The liver "subplot" that turned into the main plot at the end also added some heart to the episode that I really liked, plus the Goldberg device imagery was cool too. Mulder and Scully sure smiled a lot at each other. I'm so glad this season is off to such a great start. Mulder had his trademark leaps of logic, plus Scully suppressing her laugh at Mulder the plumber was hilarious. Can't wait till "Orison"...in January! :-/

Thanks to Jason we have a scan of the busts ad from the official magazine. BTW there is a new official page for the special M&S bust set which is advertised. Jason also alerted me to a scan of the Fox sell sheet for the season 1 DVD set. The picture on it is the preliminary cover art. As you can see from the sheet, the DVD-ROM games are different than the "Paranormal and Alien Abduction Trivia." And the sound is Dolby Surround (it can't be Dolby Digital since it's from television not film, silly me!). The DVD has not been officially announced yet other than to retailers. Anyway, Tiny Dancer's site is not up again yet...and I heard that Fox is looking at all the sites linked from there for "illegal" content! Look out. And there has been another schedule change. After tomorrow's episode, "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" will air, which we already know. But then, "Monday" will be rerun on Dec. 26 and January 2 will be another rerun too--"Field Trip." So "Orison" airs Jan. 9, "The Amazing Maleeni" airs Jan. 16, and "Signs and Wonders," Jan. 23. January 30 is another rerun. :-( The rest of today's update is spoilers.

This is about "The Amazing Maleeni": "Mulder and Scully are on the plane to Los Angeles, and Scully's head appears behind the open passenger's side window. Mulder is talking about the 'neat trick' he made. Scully is wondering how Mulder convinced her to drop everything and jump on the very first plane to L.A. Mulder says something like 'This isn't intriguing enough for you?' and asks her if she had seen the picture of the dead--and headless--magician from the pier. Scully declares that she has seen the picture." More on the episode: "Mulder figures out the final move of a very elaborate ploy. You are going to love the final minutes of this ep.... So, anyway, Mulder 'attempts' a little hand trick which produces the final bit of evidence. If the take is used, Scully just giggles with this wonderful expression on her face. It's adorable. Mulder cracks up in response. It really is a pitiful attempt at anything magical. He explains how he figured things out...she responds with a little smirk, a direct hit in the eyes and a breathy, 'You're amazing.' Cute! And, if they use one of the best of Mulder's responses....he closes his eyes and goes, 'Mmmmm.' Another tidbit: As they are walking down a hallway, Scully gets on her knees in front of him and shows him a trick!" Plus I was thinking that this episode could be the "Humbug" sequel that Jim Rose said would be made, or perhaps have some continuity from it. Well check this out: "Watch out for a reference back to a particular 'magician' scene in 'Humbug.'" The funeral? From a set report on alt.tv.x-files from the "Sein Und Zeit: Aliatope" filming last Wednesday: "On the first take, Scully walks out the front door and around the front of the [Denny's] restaurant toward Mulder, while Mulder is simultaneously wandering forward a few steps, gazing up at the [night] sky. Scully approaches from behind him, and when she arrives Mulder turns over his left shoulder and appears to give her a kiss. I swear on my life that's what it looked like. Then Scully wraps her arms around Mulder from behind and hugs him for a few seconds, then breaks away and they cut. [Second take:] Scully walks out the front door and around to Mulder, coming up on his right side and slightly behind him, standing close as always. They're both staring up at the sky and stay that way for quite some time, apparently conversing. Then Mulder bends over and puts his hands on his knees, as he does when he's in pain (emotional or physical--think the teaser of 'Redux II.' Not that much, but the same sort of movement). He straightens up, Scully puts her hand on his back and then walks off."

Not much news today--just that HTGSC and "Orison" did in fact switch airdates, so we'll see "Orison" on Dec. 26. And, this is from Entertainment Weekly on "Bad Boys":

"Hey, X-Files fans, break out the brewskies and polish up the Pinto, Chris Carter & Co. are working on a special episode that mimics the style of Fox's shaky-cam reality show, Cops. The brainchild of X-Files co-exec producer Vince Gilligan, the episode will follow a rookie cop on the streets of Los Angeles, where he bumps into Mulder and Scully. 'X-Files, in my mind, is sort of a cool and different Cops,' says Gilligan. Still under consideration is whether the Feb. 20 show will open with the familiar Cops logo. 'We don't want people tuning in, seeing Cops, and saying, "What the heck? Our show was preempted this week." We need to try to make clear that it's indeed an episode of The X-Files.' Okay, but can we at least get to see Mulder in a grimy tank top?"

12/8/99

I will start out with the brand-new news: 7X12 is currently called "Bad Boys" (thanks elwood blues!), to be directed by Michael Watkins. And (gasp!) Chris Carter is directing 7X13, which I will soon have the title for hopefully. DeX confirmed that the finale is currently being planned as a 3-parter, but don't hope for a 2-hour final episode. The last 3 episodes would be directed by Rob Bowman, Michael Watkins, and Kim Manners respectively if the current plan is kept, and let's hope it is. He also told me that the Lone Gunmen are in the "Sein Und Zeit" 2-parter! Today's shoot for part 2, which I have listed in the Season 7 Spoilers page, is specifically a Denny's restaurant. Now what does that have to do with the mythology?! Maybe another "Brothers K" restaurant-type thing like from "Talitha Cumi." Here's a nugget on "Sein Und Zeit": "Scully does the autopsy and discovers that Mrs. Mulder had cancer (a very disfiguring sort, called Padgets) and thus, Scully thinks this is why she [committed suicide]. But, Mulder knows his mother was trying to tell him something related to the kidnapping, she left a message on his answering machine. It appears like it may come out that she was murdered (highlight)." I forgot to include this quote from the official magazine, from Lance Henriksen: "David was saying he would do another year if I was on the show." From an article on "Orison": "Reuniting with Carter, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson was great, Chinlund says. But the real surprise for him involved director Bowman, who he says not only helped shape the performances, but also oversaw the intricate special effects required to pull off several scenes in which Pfaster maneuvers in real time as everyone around him carries on in super-slow motion." Sound like "Rush"?? The Bill Davis-written episode (he may direct) may have a flashback with X, and may be 7X17 (unconfirmed). He apparently wrote the script a year ago, and it's Mulder-light. (The ep could work because DD will be doing publicity for Return to Me, requiring a Mulder-light ep.) Thanks elwood blues! Plus from the official site, updated today: The season 1 DVD set "will feature deleted scenes, as well as interviews with Chris Carter, Dean Haglund, and the numerous writers and directors. There are already plans to release the next six seasons." BTW you can also pre-order the set at Reel.com for $89.99 through this site by clicking here. Plus there have been rumors about "Orison" and the 6X08 rerun being switched so the former airs on Dec. 26, but the official site still says it airs Dec. 19 so I'll stick with that for now.

"Rush"? Fantastic! I loved it all the way through. Mulder and Scully were obviously more playful this week, showing some continuity from the kiss. I liked seeing a little more of Chuck's character--the scene was very reminiscent of his first appearance in "The Calusari." The music and special effects were incredible, and quite frankly the story and writing were great I thought. I watched Fire in the Sky before seeing the episode, and Robert Lieberman's directing style (which I liked) was apparent in both. D.B. Sweeney was in the movie BTW. The acting was good, especially Tony. A commercial for stocks or something featured the athlete Cris Carter--that totally threw me off, especially when they put his name on the screen! And who caught the possible reference to the pilot ("the Oregon Vortex") and "Home" (hillbillies in a truck)? "Rush" got a 7.9/11 household rating, which is unfortunately not good at all. There were 12.71 million viewers, ranked #31 for the week! (OUCH) Adults 18-49: 6.9/15. That is the lowest 18-49 (demo) rating since May 1994. But there was no print ad this week (every season 7 episode so far, plus every season 6 episode got print ads--"The Goldberg Variation" didn't get one either I don't think). Also there was some serious cable competition.

Tiny Dancer's X-Files Episode Guide should be online again by this weekend with a different server. Speaking of which, the XF (non) Archive is gone, but Gertie's FredFarm is still up of course. BTW 2 other transcript sites are The X-Files Scripts Archive (transcripts in HTML) and CarriK's Episode Transcripts (thanks to DeX for the latter).

I heard two strange rumors: One is that CC is bringing in the Beastie Boys for an episode, possibly just a cameo. DD was apparently a fan of them in the '80s and wants to meet them. But then again, the BBoys could be the subject of 1013's movie project. The other rumor is of an "episode from season 1 that didn't get shown because Scully's breasts appeared to be erect." Not my words. They're just rumors, but they're interesting rumors at least. Anyway: "The Environmental Media Awards recognize entertainment and media that have broadened environmental awareness. Nominees include Dharma & Greg, The Simpsons, That '70s Show, The X-Files and ER. At the Beverly Hilton Hotel." "Teso Dos Bichos"? And: "TCB-Cafe Publishing's mission is to focus on works of photography, painting, poetry, and cultural criticism, particularly from first-time artists. In July 1999, TCB-Cafe presented the Emerald Eye Award. Over 40,000 online votes were cast for the Sexiest Green-Eyed Celebrity of the 21st Century. The winner, singer and actress Vanessa L. Williams, received over 20,000 votes (50 percent of the vote). She was followed by runners-up actress Fairuza Balk and actor David Duchovny."

"Wondered exactly what X-Files content the recently opened Fox Studios [in Sydney, Australia] has? Clare visted and has all the details: 'There was a bit of X-Files stuff. In the Hall of Cool Stuff, there were props from the movie. Gillian's chair back, their badges, Scully's cross, sunflower seeds, Scully's autopsy equipment, their watches, evidence from the Dallas bomb and a mobile phone to name a few of the stuff. Then in the TV Tour, they have Mulder's (and Scully's) office with an intro by Mitch Pileggi. And if you listen carefully, you can hear the X-Files theme occasionally when walking around the park. They have some X-Files memorabilia, but nothing fantastic.'"

"Though I have no official authority, I am declaring November 14th through 28th the National Shipper Holiday! This holiday will be called Shipperent. Think of it as a shortened Advent, only better. It will be our own spiritual journey with MSR. Shipperent will be a time of the MSR we all enjoy. The two-week celebration begins on the 14th, the death of the Foul One--the woman who had been ruining the whole concept of MSR. On that night (as long as The X-Files isn't on), we should all parade around the streets screaming, 'Death to the Foul One!' in sour commemoration of the passing of Diana Fowley. All, including noromos, are invited to celebrate on that day with us. (I do happen to know a lot of Diana-haters who are noromos.) The celebration ends on the 28th, the day the first kiss between our two heroes aired. On that night, we'll gather around our TVs with friends and reminisce the MSR over a few taped eps that prove the undying love and need between Mulder and Scully. And the time between the 14th and 28th, we'll do whatever we want to please our shippery hearts. You decide. Swap gifts, sing romantic songs in the shower, pick flowers, hug trees. So, if anyone has any questions or anything, e-mail me at scully223@email.com or come chat with me on AOL IM (and my screen name is dkscully223). I love talking!"

FINALLY, thanks to the awesome Dennis X, I have info on unaired Harsh Realm episodes. "'Kein Ausgang' takes place in a simulator program within Harsh Realm, which studies the tactics of the U.S. and German armies in 1944. It is a loop, in which all the VCs within it are destined to repeat their actions over and over again, every forty or so days. There is a glitch somewhere in the software, and it's the only way out, but where is it? Hobbes and Pinocchio inadvertently leave the confines of their titular game; too bad they end up in a time warp fighting Nazis! While looking for a soldier, Sgt. Sommer, who once nearly penetrated Santiago's forces, Hobbes and Pinocchio get stuck in the combat simulation game of a WWII battle. They must find the jump-portal to escape the game, or else be destined to watch the battle scenario repeat over and over with the same outcome. The episode's teaser was based in a farmhouse, where a soldier calmly prepares tea and announces to himself each little event a moment before it occurs. The episode was written by Steve Maeda and it was his first commercially-produced script (he was sooo excited!!!), and it was directed by Cliff Bole." And: "In 'Three Percenters' Hobbes is introduced to a commune of Three Percenters, aberrations no one meant to create. Pinocchio explains that the game designers of HR supposedly had a three-percent error rate in some pretty angry virtual characters. Hobbes, Pinocchio, and Florence find themselves captives of Three Percenters posing as a group of pacifists...."

12/5/99

Sorry for the kind-of lack of updates lately. But it's catch-up time. I got my official magazine (#12) Friday, and I wasn't expecting it at all so it was a great surprise. Plus I bought the yearbook. The next issue comes out on Feb. 15, and it's about the mythology episodes which air before it comes out. Now what is the point of that?? Anyway here is the info from the latest issue. DD has another idea for an episode to be written with Chris Carter (this is the rumored standalone--George Clooney stars?). Plus he will probably direct another one that he will write. Work on the movie will start right after the series ends, i.e. story and writing. The remaining 5 episodes (out of 8 total) of Harsh Realm are being finished in postproduction. Frank Spotnitz said that "I would think they would see the light of day somewhere, sometime, but I don't know." On Nov. 29 season 6 started airing on FX. There is an ad for the M&S movie busts, which are now cheaper and come with original XF art. Volume 5 (season 6) of the official episode guides is here, called The End and the Beginning: The Official Guide to The X-Files. Chris Carter said: "I've had [the series' final episode] in my head for years." Then: "What I haven't had a chance to do are sequels to episodes that I really liked. Next year, if the show were to go on, I would hope that there might be a way to reinvestigate some of the cases that were left [open-ended]." He may write or co-write 10-12, not just 10, episodes this season. 1013 is also developing a movie about a contemporary rock band (the Foo Fighters? Soul Coughing? Filter? the Barenaked Ladies?). The band approached them, and it would be like the dark media satire Network (directed by Sidney Lumet). Carter would produce and possibly write the screenplay. Plus he has thought up some potential storylines (mytharcs) for the 8th season if it happens. In the interesting article about Jeffrey Bell, it said that in the teaser for "The Goldberg Variation" a guy gets thrown off the top of a building and walks away unscathed. Bell also has directed films, and would like to direct for the show but admits that it is probably unlikely. David Amann is "rapidly approaching another story deadline." (I can't wait till "Rush"...especially after reading the article on it!) And that's about all the new info. But there were some blatant errors in the magazine this time around...calling 7X07 "Oricon," saying that TGV already aired and that "Millennium" airs at the end of December, saying that CC has a "hush-hush" series in the works even though it fell through right after HR was canceled (see below), printing the unaired scene from "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" (which the yearbook called "The Sixth Extinction: Part II") after the episode was shown and labeling it as from the premiere...plus the yearbook had the same sort of errors. However both were enjoyable.

The CC/JMS series fell through. Basically what happened was that after the HR cancellation Fox only wanted CC to work on something 100% Carter (the premise of HR was from a comic book). The series was called The World on Fire ("90% mainstream, 10% sci-fi") and would have been executive-produced by J. Michael Straczynski, Chris Carter, and Frank Spotnitz. JMS will probably still continue the project by himself. He said: "The irony of course is that if Harsh Realm had been canceled even a week later, we would've concluded the deal with CBS for the show." Ten Thirteen contacted JMS after his series Crusade (Babylon 5 spinoff) was canceled by TNT. JMS said: "In my years in the biz, I have rarely enjoyed a partnership with anyone as much as with Chris and Frank, who are not only stand-up guys, but in all of our discussions I don't think a single idea got broached that didn't make sense. Their approach is the same we had at B5: you check your ego at the door and do what's best for the story. I have nothing but good things to say about them, and even though Fox felt that they needed to go forth only with 100 percent CC after HR was canceled, I consider the experience a positive one. They're good people over there at Ten Thirteen."

Here's the big news on 7X12, from Autumn T. on SpoilerVille: "So here's some info. The plan is to shoot this thing on video 'gun and run' style, and even try to copy the Cops music, legends [I was thinking that too!], and title sequence [wow]. They'll curse a lot and bleep out what won't pass the censors. The cops in this episode are the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. There is a full moon and a report comes in of a claw monster lurking about. Oh, and Scully? She *hates* the camera. Well, they [M&S] happen to be looking for the 'claw monster' too when the cops being filmed run into them and they join forces." More on "Sein Und Zeit": "This ep involves the unexplained disappearances of a number of children and the subsequent investigations of their parents (a la JonBenet Ramsey). However, Samantha's disappearance is linked here as well. This probably turns into more of a mythology episode for the 2nd part. There looks to be a good Scully/Mulder scene. After Mulder finds out about his mother's death he breaks down in Scully's arms and she spends the night at his apartment! But, nothing happens."

"Twentieth Century Fox Television apparently is minding its Kim Manners, inking an exclusive multiyear pact with the veteran The X-Files director/producer. The deal calls for Manners to develop TV series for Twentieth and Chris Carter's Ten Thirteen Productions while continuing to direct episodes of The X-Files." Now I'll put down some more little news bites. The season 1 DVD set is for Region 1 and close-captioned. You can pre-order it for only $89.99 here. The FTF DVD was the 13th biggest seller this year. In the 1st week of January, season 6 returns to the BBC. "The off-network weeklies saw The X-Files uncover a 4.7 as its first-run counterpart had its season premiere on Fox. The syndicated version was up 12% over the previous week, marking the 100th time in its two off-network seasons that the show has topped its genre (out of the 108 weeks it's been on the air)." In the week of Nov. 15-21, X2 beat out syndicated ER! Dean Haglund and William B. Davis's auction is over. "After a long hiatus XF is back on Hungarian TV [since it was banned] starting Nov. 19 at 22:55 (GMT+1) on MTV1." "The Japanese Fox channel (at Sky PerfecTV or some cable TV) is repeating XF's first season at 8 p.m. (dubbed in Japanese) and 11 p.m. (subtitled) on Monday, Nov. 22." Sorry about this "old news" thing BTW. Anyway starting January 9, XF gets a new lead-in again (when "Signs and Wonders" airs...sounds like another ratings win for Jeffrey Bell!). The acclaimed comedy Malcolm in the Middle will replace Futurama as the lead-in; the latter will be moved to another timeslot. BTW last week's ep was #27 (share), but #19 in number of viewers.

Tiny Dancer's site was shut down by Fox. I tried to get there for this week's Quote of the Week and it was gone--lo and behold, it turned out that it was Foxed! She has decided not to just take out the parts of the site that were "illegal"--since that would leave almost nothing. She is looking into a Canadian server, however, because in Canada the copyright laws aren't as strict. So there may still be hope. Until then CarriK will continue transcribing and sending the transcripts to TD's mailing list. I'm not sure what the address is--does anyone know?

From Dennis X, a possible meaning of "Aliatope": "It is Greek--and the actual physical/chemical term should be 'allotrope'--one of two or more existing forms of an element; charcoal, graphite, and carbon are all allotropes of carbon."

12/1/99

Let's start out with the big DVD/video news first. The X-Files: Season One DVD set comes out on May 16, 2000. All 23 episodes plus the pilot, 12 "conversations with Chris Carter" a la the videos (1 for every 2 eps), 20 Behind the Truth segments, and 1 preview for each episode (cross-referenced) are included. Two interactive DVD-ROM games, Paranormal and Alien Abduction Trivia, are also included, plus Web links. The set consists of 7 discs and is priced at $149.98 (you can find cheaper prices elsewhere--you can preorder it here for $99.95). No word on discs being sold separately. Sound: Dolby Surround (no word on Digital) in English and French, and English and Spanish subtitles. Whew! It will be a long wait but hopefully worth it. Speaking of DVD, the movie will be out in the U.K. (Region 2) on DVD on January 31. No word on extras. The "Biogenesis" trilogy on tape internationally is called "The Syndicate" for reasons beyond me. It will be released on February 7 in the U.K. like I said earlier. On the same day, the Season 6 Collector's Box will come out there (5 videos), limited to around 50,000 and individually numbered. Thanks to David Yeldon for the U.K. info! Oh yeah, more on the U.K. "Dreamland" video thanks to Christopher Wooff. It came out on Nov. 22, price £14.99 including shipping and handling. The number for ordering is 08456 10 22 13, charged at local rate. The "Piper Maru" video (including "Apocrypha") is also available at the number for £12.99.

Now for some random tidbits. Helix Online (home of 24Hour News X) has started updating again. In Australia, Millennium (the remaining 5 episodes not shown) will air soon on Channel 7, and the movie will be shown on Foxtel in February. More awards: "20th Century Fox Television's The X-Files was the top winner in the television category with three [On Location] awards. The studio earned one for production company of the year, and X-Files creator Chris Carter's Ten Thirteen won the California On Location Signature Award." From Dec. 31-Jan. 1 FX is doing a 28-episode Millennium marathon. And, in the latest McFarlane Toys Collector's Club catalog (11/24/99), the X-Files Three-Pack was listed with a picture.

Oh yeah, I thought "Millennium" was classic, very reminiscent of the 2nd season. Of course the kiss was icing on the cake. The love was so obvious, it was flying off the screen! Kinda like PMP it left me with a warm fuzzy feeling, which is cool after an especially scary episode (zombies and red flares!). Henriksen was excellent as Frank Black. Oh yeah--those wondering why there was no mention of Scully's tattoo, which is the Millennium Group's symbol, flipped I think--wasn't the shot of Scully's reaction to the ouroboros a little longer than expected? She seemed a little uncomfortable. Anyway the final ratings were 9.1/13 with 15.04 million viewers, #27 for the week. Spoiler time. A little more info on Vince Gilligan's next episode (7X12): He apparently mentioned at the L.A. Expo a few years back an idea he pitched to 1013 about Mulder and Scully driving around dealing with weird things like in Cops (Bad Boys, like what the official site said). After reading that I figured it was going to be an episode filmed with a video camera, all shaky and stuff like the actual show (and The Blair Witch Project, I just realized). Then the official site (updated today) posted this: "Television cameras catch Mulder and Scully in the act. Find out in episode #12." So we've got Mulder and Scully seen only from the view of a handheld camera like in Cops, possibly with some extra security and news-camera footage too (that would be cool)? Now the episode is sounding a lot like the movie Bob Roberts too (no relation to Rob Roberts). Anyway my friend Sang thought up the same thing for an XF episode last summer (an episode entirely shown through cameras). Great minds think alike.... Anyway, our pal Chuck (last seen in "Biogenesis") is back in "Rush" (hmm time for some more photo analysis...). Thanks Dennis X! BTW DeX also believes that the Bill Davis-penned episode could be 7X17, with the Lone Gunmen ep being 7X18 (and possibly also 7X19 if it's a 2-parter!). The finale may be a 3-parter (and I'm hoping for a 2-hour final episode). Wow, lots of parentheses in this paragraph.

Just two things today. First off, the Dreamland (Special Edition) videos are out in the U.K., only available by mail-order. And second, this is from a CC interview (don't really know what to think...):

"...But never have Scully and Mulder done the lips-on-lips thing as themselves. And before fans of the show think they should be especially thankful this weekend because of the kiss, listen up. X-Files creator Carter says there will be no romantic entanglement mixed in with alien-and-mutant investigations.

"'I've resisted any temptation [of romance] because I don't think it's right for the characters,' says Carter. 'For me, the passion and the protectiveness of one towards the other is something that we all admire and envy because that kind of trust and caring happens so infrequently in life. When it does, it is transcendent.'

"Carter says the relationship between Mulder and Scully has never been about sex or romance. It is the closeness between partners that most law enforcement types share that is at the center of their bond. It is also the closeness of two best friends, which in many cases can be as special and deep as a love affair.

"'Sometimes [viewers] don't realize how protective Mulder is of Scully, and how noble and masculine and good that is,' Carter says. 'They see it as two people who kid each other and are playful and protect each other in the most common senses of the word. But he's very protective of her as a woman.' Carter adds that Scully is just as protective of Mulder."

11/25/99 *Updated*

UPDATE: A new official summary for "Rush": "When an innocent teen recently transplanted from the big city is accused of the gruesome and unexplained murder of a sheriff's deputy in a small Midwestern town, MULDER and SCULLY arrive on the scene to investigate the bizarre crime. The crime has supernatural underpinnings; it appears the murder is linked to people who move faster than the eye can see. A series of frightening incidents point Mulder and Scully in the direction of the sheriff's charismatic, but troubled, teenage son. As MULDER and SCULLY race against time to prevent the sheriff's son from unleashing his 'speed rage' on an unsuspecting town, we see not only how quickly absolute power can corrupt an individual but also how easy it is to prey on the emotional vulnerabilities of impressionable kids." BTW the Mythology section is updated to "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati." And happy Thanksgiving, enjoy/hope you all enjoyed the marathon!

OK, the title for part 2 of the Feb. 2-parter is "Sein Und Zeit: Aliatope." It starts filming next Thursday. The producers are really into this repeated title thing this season. But I love the foreign titles. Anyway part 2 will be directed by Kim Manners. 7X10 airs Feb. 6, and 7X11 airs Feb. 13. Other airdates: "Signs and Wonders" on Jan. 16, "The Goldberg Variation" was moved up to Dec. 12, "Orison" on Dec. 19, and "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" more appropriately on Dec. 26. Confirm that 7X11 will be the 150th episode to film. Plus more filming dates: 7X12 starts on Dec. 14, 7X13 on Jan. 7, 7X14 on the 19th, and 7X15 on the 31st. The winter filming hiatus starts on Dec. 20 and everyone returns on Jan. 3. 7X12 is not written by John Shiban, but by Vince Gilligan. What we know so far: "Mulder and Scully accidentally get mixed up with Bad Boys. Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?" The above is from the updated official site. I will call "The Widow's Eye," by Shiban, 7X14 for now. Anyway, the PlayStation game contest now works. Finally this is from an article on "Orison":

"[Nick] Chinlund says: 'Donnie has been in prison. He's been incubating all of his disease. It's a heightened five-years-in-wait version of him that you'll see. He's stepped up a notch. Orison is a prison preacher who tries to save Donnie, and so you have a battle there. Basically, Donnie and the Devil are released from prison and havoc ensues. There's more religious significance to "Orison" than "Irresistible," and more of the devilish aspect is explored. There was one very powerful graveyard scene we did for "Orison"--which I can't tell you about--that was very difficult for me.' He's extremely complimentary of Rob Bowman, the ep's director: 'Bowman is the most technically adept director I've ever worked with. He really knows what the camera and lighting can do, and he knows his options and what he wants. He got very excited about this episode. It's going to look incredible, especially for a television show. He might be the star of this one. If they want me to do Donnie again, if they want to make it a trilogy, I'll probably be all for it.'"

11/24/99

The big news today is about "Sein Und Zeit" but first the final ratings for "Hungry": 9.6/14 household with 16.18 million viewers (#21 for the week out of 117 shows). Now then..."Sein Und Zeit" is part 1 of the 2-part February sweeps mytharc, with part 2 being 7X11. "The Widow's Eye" is 7X12. Mulder's mom apparently commits suicide (highlight) in 7X10. Previously we heard that it was about parents suspected of abducting children. Now we have more info courtesy of Autumn T.: "There's even a Santa Claus killer named Ed Truelove involved that has done a number of murders in this two-parter that Mulder even hopes a la 'Paper Hearts' might lead to some clues about Samantha." The parents mentioned above abduct their own children. With that said and done (can't wait, wow!!), I forgot to mention that I saw an episode of VIP last Sunday with Dean Haglund playing himself. I found out more about it: It's called "Val Goes to Town" and was directed by Chuck Bowman, that's right, Rob Bowman's dad. Dean and Pamela Anderson (the star of the show, duh) got along fine since they're both from Vancouver. It was a cool episode, plenty of XF mentions and a high-pitched scream from Dean! Now I'm pasting two snippets:

"Thank you for your interest in The X-Files Unrestricted Access. Although we are no longer offering updates of The X-Files for The X-Files Unrestricted Access, thex-files.com has the latest episode guides available. Please check back with us to learn more about our future titles.

"Sincerely,
Fox Interactive"

"After scripts from The X-Files began showing up on eBay before they were broadcast on TV, [Fox] hired [Jeff] Uslen for the newly created job (his license plate reads 'cyberfuzz'). He quickly installed Message Inspector software that monitors all of the studio's e-mail traffic to make sure no more scripts wander off and to block hate mail from reaching its stars' e-mail boxes."

The first snippet was from Fox Interactive to someone who e-mailed asking about updates for XFUA. The second was from an article. Anyway, The X-Files: Season One Gift Pack (DVD set) should be out by 2nd quarter 2000, possibly before. And finally, the official site and all of Fox.com was down today. Hmm.

I'm a little disappointed in all the negativity going around about "Hungry," because I definitely enjoyed it. It basically took away all the M&S investigative work and cut right to the conclusions we already knew they would come to...an interesting and fresh point of view for an episode. Again: This was NOT meant to be a M&S-heavy episode! Both actors were busy with other projects at the time of filming anyway. BTW when Rob got in front of everyone in the support group...hilarious! The prelim Nielsens are good: 16.39 million viewers, 9.3/20 in adults 18-49. Also Jason sent me the print ad for "Millennium."

Now let's all have a collective frown...Bryan Spicer's apparently off 7X13, and won't direct for 1013 again. No reason known. There is another official site for the PlayStation game; click here. With that there's a contest, which currently won't function when you submit your name, address, etc. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. Is everyone looking forward to "Millennium"? ;-) Dick Clark is in the episode, playing himself. (!) Peter Watts won't be in it though. I'm also expecting a new tagline, somewhere along the lines of "The Time is Near" (or "Now"?). What do you think! Thanks to the French Thinker I have an upcoming foreign video release date. A video with the "Biogenesis" 3-parter will be released in France on January 12 (and on the same day in Australia too). I found out on the newsgroup that it will be released on February 7 in the U.K. Also in last update I forgot to say that the fan club contest cards are exclusive to members only. "Signs and Wonders" info from an article:

"Mulder and Scully (played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) will be sent to the fictional McMinn County [Tennessee] town of Blessing to investigate macabre happenings in a snake-handling church congregation, an official with Fox Broadcasting said Friday.

"...Mulder and Scully will be investigating a 'series of bizarre and unexplained snakebite deaths' occurring in a religious context, the Fox Broadcasting official said.

"...Snake-handling, a revivalist Christian movement that started in 1909 near Cleveland, Tenn., could provide ample material for the program, which often explores religious beliefs that fall outside the mainstream."

More on the CC/J. Michael Straczynski series (see last update). JMS said this: "There's nothing that I can say about this at this time, but I will be able to say a little more in about a week...all I can say for now is that it is and it isn't what it seems." I see. Now, THIS is interesting: the original ending of "Amor Fati." People have been criticizing the change in Scully's hairdo due to GA's hairdo change in the reshot ending, and the fact that it wasn't covered up...but may I remind everyone that it *was* "One Week Later"? Finally, Fox is turning the gears: "Though key players on The X-Files have stated they would prefer this to be the program's final year, [Sandy] Grushow called keeping that franchise going 'a major priority, and it will continue to be one until we've secured another season.'"

Some "Signs and Wonders" info: There will be tons of snakes. From Autumn T. on SpoilerVille: "Small town preacher's daughter gets herself in the family way without a ring on her finger. Enter trouble. Some very interesting Scully stuff in this one. At one point she has her hand shoved in a box of rattlers, and in the end even Mulder recognizes that she is a 'righteous babe' for remaining unbitten in the course of the tale." In "The Widow's Eye" the soul sucker is an Asian woman. "Amor Fati" got #21 for last week with 16.16 million viewers (10.1/14; 8.9/18 18-49), and even The Washington Post acknowledges that the show is getting great ratings even opposite Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? XF helped Fox get #1 in adults 18-49 Sunday. Now here are 2 news blurbs:

"While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Schwarzenegger revealed that the main reason he hadn't done a movie in a while was due to his commitment to I Am Legend [Rob Bowman's project] rather than his recent heart operations. Arnold reveals, 'They asked Ridley [Scott] and myself, "Could we do this movie for $75 or $80 million?" The way it was designed, the scope that it had, we said no. We said, "If you're not willing to do the movie for that price, then let's just wait until things change a little bit. It will be done eventually."'"

"Following an especially weak start for its fall season, Fox has a new boss. News Corp. named Sandy Grushow, 39, president of the 20th Century Fox Television studio, to the new post of chairman, Fox Television Entertainment Group. He'll now run both the studio and the TV network's programming division. Fox Entertainment chief Doug Herzog will stay, but he'll now report to Grushow. 'Clearly, the network's performance this season has been disappointing,' Grushow said, 'and the mandate is pretty simply to address the problems that exist. I don't believe Doug Herzog is one of them.'" Our good friend Doug.

William Gibson's episode is scheduled to air Feb. 27 and "The Amazing Maleeni" airs Jan. 9. Thanks to Jason we have the print ad for "Hungry." There is now an official site for the game on PlayStation, here. Go to this site for something weird. It's either the previous or upcoming version of the new official site. The text hasn't been written yet but the design is really cool. It also has the promised Global Mythology Locator plus an unfinished Plot Threads feature, and hints at a QuickTime VR gallery to come. There's even a section for fan sites. I found this preview site (or whatever) by accident. Anyway, Nick Lea will finish filming his movie sometime between December and February, so hopefully he'll be able to return to film the 2-parter in January. Skinner will be in "Sein Und Zeit." Now get ready for this: Chris Carter is already at work on his next series, with Babylon 5 and Crusade creator J. Michael Straczynski. It is for CBS, and is described as "98% reality-based and 2% speculative fiction."

Finally, 4 new cool additions to the Vault. They are an exclusive season 7 poster based on the TV Guide season 7 print ad, a numbered "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" script signed by Mitch Pileggi (limited to 250, and you will get the same number as the premiere and season 6 finale script if you got one or both of those), a "The Truth is Out There" cap, and a numbered sheet of official fan club cards for a contest at a convention (limited to 100, 24 cards per sheet, 6 each of Mulder, Scully, CSM, and Skinner).
