7/28/2000

More like early 7/29 but...no news today--just a notice that I'll be gone for a week. And some more on yesterday's news: GA very likely wanted to renegotiate after DD's contract, and Fox may have required that to do so she would have to add on an extra year. Or maybe she wants a safety net in case a movie career doesn't work out? Well I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

7/27/2000

The big news is that Gillian Anderson signed--or will soon sign--to extend her contract through a season 9. What does this mean? First of all, Chris Carter still is signed only through season 8. Robert Patrick is signed through season 8 as well with an option for another year. We can be sure David Duchovny won't be around for another season. Basically, this could mean nothing at all. Maybe it's just a safety measure, who knows? But in no way does this mean that there will be a season 9. The most important thing to remember is that CC won't return for another season unless he thinks it can work--that means seeing how season 8 turns out. Now lots of people are worked up about this; I don't know what to think about a season without any Mulder at all. But I think, before anyone passes judgment, that we should at least wait until the new season to talk about the season after! I was glad to see that a few posts on the newsgroup attempting to start letter-writing campaigns against a season 9 (the opposite of the usual purpose for starting a campaign) were responded to with remarks telling the authors to simply turn off the TV if they don't want to watch. It's too early now to feel anything about a season 9--whether you are for or against it. But remember that 1013 has brought us this far--to "Requiem" and what looks to be an awesome conclusion to it and a great setup for a new season--and we have to keep our faith. Chris Owens was signed for two whole seasons and was killed off after less than one, so remember, contracts really don't mean anything. BTW--in the article that announced the news, "one of this season's episodes" beginning and ending in the bedroom refers to "all things," not an upcoming episode as the writer mistakenly said.

In other news (thanks Roda93!), it looks like the spinoff will premiere the first Sunday of March, followed by three more episodes on the subsequent Sundays--that is, a whole month's break for XF. That works out because there are only 20 episodes this season, plus that probably means two less reruns! Well anyway, the official site put up its transcript of CC's Comic-Con appearance. Also the Vault has some new episode photos. Finally, just wanted to add that good ol' Mr. Showbiz was speculating when it said that we would get flashbacks of M&S doing the deed, or close to it. We may get flashbacks, but don't be too hopeful!

7/25/2000

Today was day one of filming for probably the last season of the show (well, we thought that last year too). In the aftermath of all the season 8 info pouring in, there are a few more tidbits and CC quotes from the Comic-Con that I'm just going to list. One of the quotes actually confirms one of my mythology theories which some people don't believe, and another denies the allegations of the "Quatermass conspiracy," the (ridiculous) belief some people sadly have that most of the XF mytharc was stolen from a '60s-'70s British sci-fi TV movie series. I'm glad he finally addressed that. So enjoy the extra tidbits/quotes, and read on for info on an official contest NOT for Americans...and how to submit a proposed name for Mark Snow's new record label!

  • Another game is in the works...plus possibly more platforms for the first one!
  • Robert Patrick actually signed a multi-year deal.
  • The spinoff starts filming in October and the pilot will air in March. There are 3-4 storylines set, but no scripts yet. One of the stories is being worked on now. If the change from January to March 2001 is a part of the proposed plan mentioned in last update, that could mean the pilot will premiere in the XF timeslot, after which the series will move to Thursdays at 8.
  • CC hopes and has an idea for Frank Black's return.
  • In a continuation from another CC quote saying that Samantha would be dealt with a little more next season, he dropped (unintentionally?) this: Mulder believes that Samantha "will be perhaps returned from the starlight people."
  • Continuing CC's brief reference to a Millennium movie in his UCSB appearance: "I would like to make a Millennium movie. I think it would be a great movie, and I would go back to the pilot, what the pilot was, what the whole show could have been, and I would kind of like to go back and start all over again and do that as a movie. If I knew that there were people who would go out and watch it, because I would make it good. I think that would be something I'd spend some time on."
  • Interesting quote: "Something I learned with Harsh Realm is not to introduce [the mythology] too soon. Give people a chance to get to know the characters and setup...before you get into the heavy stuff." He added that eventually there would be a TLG mythology.
  • CC is still working on his Riptide screenplay, and he and FS are just starting on The World of Ted Serios.
  • CC talked to Mitch Pileggi about expanding Skinner's role, but he was quick to say that he will keep true to the stories, i.e. he will not give Skinner an uncharacteristically large role.
  • Season 2 DVD set status: They're currently doing the "second printing of the first batch."
  • "We just won't be doing those big, slapstick-y, slaphappy episodes."
  • "There was a point last season, it was actually distressing, where it was right around Christmastime and I came into Frank Spotnitz's office and I was kind of excited and I said, 'I've got this idea, and it'd be really great if we could do this and this and this.' And he said, 'You know, we only have ten more episodes left to go.' And that was when we thought the show wasn't coming back, and it was like, wait a second!" Wonder if that idea, whatever it was, will be used this season....
  • On the "Quatermass conspiracy": "No. That's somebody that's really working hard. But if you start the show with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon...."
  • On Darin Morgan: "We call him every year, several times a year. I think the last conversation someone had with him, he said that he had a ghost story he wanted to tell. He saw the movie The Sixth Sense and he said, 'Oh, they took my idea.' He went into a state of depression, or so he said."
  • "We really hinted at an Area 51-like base in the 'Deep Throat' episode, which is the first one past the pilot. I don't know if we'll go back to that base particularly, but we may actually explore that area because we're actually back in UFO territory and alien territory with the abduction of Mulder."
  • "There are actually several alien races, and of course there's the greys and there are the faceless aliens, who are another race, and then there's the Alien Bounty Hunter who is a renegade; he left the faceless crew. So these things are actually all going to be explored this year, because I know people have big questions about that." He calls them races while I never used the term (meaning, different races of the same colonist species), and he kind of explains the ABH-rebel connection the reverse of my way (the faceless aliens broke off from the BHs), but hey we mean the same thing.

Now this is news--from Mark Snow's manager Robert Urband to the webmaster of Encore: The Ultimate Mark Snow Site: "I would like to thank all the fans out there who raised my awareness of the need for a Millennium CD. With that ammunition I have been successful in getting the usually apathetic bureaucracy at Fox to grant Mark and myself a license to distribute the record. This will be the first release on the label and we have not even named the label yet. Any suggestions from the fans?" E-mail the webmaster here with suggestions; he will pass them on. Anyway the official site began a new contest today, and this one is only for U.K. fans. The info is here. Dean Haglund's site has an official mailing list; click here to sign up. The thing is, I only found it by accident in the source code because I noticed some weirdness on the front page. The signup page is supposed to pop up but it doesn't, so just use the link. In Emmy-related news, Kathy Griffin from "Fight Club" was 1013's submission for Best Guest Actress--the ad is here. Finally, I found out about a merchandise cancellation, something I didn't even know existed--a Mulder & Scully poster published by Import Images in January. The company stopped production. Also the pilot, "Memento Mori," and "Triangle" scripts are being released to comic/merchandise stores.

7/23/2000

I can't believe how many articles, transcripts, etc. have been going around in the past few days on season 8 and Doggett. I'm only going to put here what I didn't put already in the new Season 8 Spoilers and Lone Gunmen Spoilers pages. Check both for all of the info from the barrage (including CC's Comic-Con appearance) we've been getting lately. Be sure to check the latter page for an interesting spinoff scheduling possibility. Some shooting info: The rumored location for the premiere episodes' filming is Death Valley! Apparently the crew will be shooting there for the next 2 weeks. Also the spinoff is confirmed to begin production in Vancouver, possibly as soon as next month. Anyway, the character listing a while back was legit, and I was also right when I theorized in the Mythology section that Gibson would be the last hope! Anyway something interesting is that Chris Carter "was actually thinking about the first post-series movie's storyline on his way down from L.A." to the Comic-Con yesterday. A nice CC quote: "Everyone is afraid of change. Mulder and Scully--David and Gillian--are the reason for the show's great success, but that doesn't mean you can't threaten the paradigm or model of the relationship every once in a while. In fact, dramatically, you better do that every once in a while or you're going to have a very stale show." And: "In an often lively question-and-answer session with reporters, Carter strayed from his normal public persona of reticence and startled many of those present with his candor--even admitting that last season was not the show's finest--and used wry humor and witty comebacks to deflect questions about sensitive plot points." "Carter said he and Duchovny have had lunch 'two or three times' in the past 10 days and are well on their way to patching up their differences." Sounds like a top-secret meeting to me! And the highlight of all of the recent CC quotes, answering a question asking who's the father: "I am. I'm the baby's father, and its mother." BTW--fun fact--Robert Patrick is the brother of Filter's lead singer! That band was on both the series and movie's soundtrack albums and has had at least one song in an episode ("D.P.O." comes to mind). More on Patrick from CC: "Robert had actually come in a couple of years ago to read for something else. He wasn't quite right for that part, but I knew I wanted to work with him." What could it be? "Drive"? One article said: "More than 100 actors were considered to help fill the gap soon to be left by Duchovny's departure, though only 10 were serious contenders, according to Carter."

After all this, could there be anything exciting left going on? The answer is yes. A few things, actually. First, this is from the official McFarlane Toys site: "What follows is a list of insider information flowing through the McFarlane offices. Some of these toy lines might not ever see the light of day, but it's still fun to talk about them. And for the ones that do get produced, well, you can say you read it here first.... How about the McFarlane Toys Collector's Club? A couple [year] 2000 exclusives for members could be a certain X-Files character [Flukeman] hidden away at Toy Fair and a certain nasty-tempered cigar[ette] aficionado." And, who would think that it would happen, Fox has agreed to let Mark Snow release an album of his Millennium music (thanks Drew Pearson!). Also remember the 2001 calendar is out next month, and a picture of it is here. Finally, the official site put up a streaming video of the X-Props promo TV spot here.

7/20/2000 *Updated*

LATER UPDATE: Yes, we have the NAME of Scully's new partner! From the below source: "FBI agent John Doggett [is] a former Marine and NYPD cop and a 'man's man' with a working-class sensibility. And now that Scully has had too many brushes with the paranormal to believably pose as a non-believer, Doggett may assume that role. 'Unlike Scully though, who had science as her argument, Doggett's a sort of knee-jerk skeptic,' Carter said at the annual Television Critics Association Press Tour [today]. 'He needs to see it, touch it, taste it, smell it to believe it.'"

UPDATE: From Roda93 and her reliable source, "DD back [for shooting] week 2 in January for February episode [part 1]. End of first ep in February is Mulder's return."

Today was a big news day. Just after rumors originating from Fox this morning that Kyle MacLachlan was being considered for Scully's new partner--IF she was going to get one at all--Chris Carter announced that Robert Patrick was chosen as the newest cast member. That's right, the guessing game is over. The strange thing? He is signed for the entire season. So when Mulder comes back, there will be two people in need of a desk? The other exciting news today was the announcement of the Emmy nominations. Well, not so exciting for X-Files fans. The show got 6 nominations, but none in the major categories. I'd guess that because of the new system where voters are supposed to watch all the submitted videos at home instead of at a group viewing session, they're only watching what everyone else says is good, namely, The West Wing (which I have to say is good) and The Sopranos (never seen it). But not even a writing or directing nom? That is called "bias." "First Person Shooter" got three, for sound editing and sound mixing, and visual effects. "Rush" was also nominated for best effects, and "Theef" got the other two for musical score (yay Mark Snow!) and makeup. And now, both Frank Spotnitz and the official site confirm the July 25 date for the start of production and the Nov. 5 premiere date. In fact, the first episode/premiere is in preproduction right now, which the official site confirms is written by Carter with Kimmers directing. No out-of-order stuff this season. Even more confirmations (correct rumors? what?):

"On the Central Casting hotline (Central Casting books extras for television shows and films), there was a call for real-life deaf-mute kids and an instructor who knows sign language. Also, there was a call for a David Duchovny look-alike/stand-in/photo double."

So that character breakdown is probably real (scroll down). BTW the "M&S love scene will be shown in the premiere to keep fans hooked/DD & CC had a secret meeting with coffee/etc." rumor is making the rounds again. Beware! Also, the official site put up another rerun date--check Season 7 Spoilers, where I still post the upcoming primetime and X2 episodes. I'll of course move that to the Season 8 Spoilers page as soon as I put that up. Soon! (Season 8 info is in the previous season's page until then.)

At Frank Spotnitz's recent panel appearance, he mentioned that they cast a black woman in the spinoff. I don't think that's the female lead--another character? He also said that the writing staff is not entirely composed of white males. I thought this over, and that doesn't sound possible, unless Steven Maeda is still on staff (it sounds like a foreign name). Someone was pestering him with those kind of awkward questions. Just thought that was interesting. Now I've got some surprising merchandise (movie even!) news: FTF is being re-released on DVD, on an anamorphic transfer and in Dolby Digital 5.1 AND DTS sound! Expect it later this year. Also, if Millennium's first season is released on DVD, then it will come out sometime next year. More Web banners and I'll end with news that will have interesting repercussions on the official site. I found 6 more banner ads for the X-Props contest: another small one, two regular-sized ones (1, 2), two medium-sized ones (1, 2), and a big one. And the final paste:

"News Corp.'s News Digital Media is readying to reveal Fox.com's facelift, showing more signs of original programming than promotion. Long chastised for its un-Net-savvy nature (considering the Web-savvy demographic its films and TV shows target), News Digital Media group shows strong signs that Fox is finally finding its way out of the fog. Fox.com plans to create Web destinations for Fox's library of properties (The Simpsons, The X-Files, Ally McBeal), original content based on characters or plots from Fox's shows and completely original entertainment projects. Site will bow in the fall. News Digital is working with all its divisions--Fox Broadcasting Co., 20th Century Fox Television, Fox Television Studios--and lot-based production companies such as Chris Carter's Ten Thirteen Prods. and David E. Kelley Prods. to develop Web programming. Should they prove successful, Fox.com projects could migrate back to TV. Goal is to make Web programming part of the production process for every film and TV show Fox produces."

7/17/2000

Here's the latest on Scully's new partner:

"The search for a new partner for Gillian Anderson in the new season of The X-Files is heating up. Bruce Campbell (Jack of All Trades), Hart Bochner (Anywhere But Here), Lou Diamond Phillips (Picking up the Pieces) and Robert Patrick (The Faculty) are on creator-executive producer Chris Carter's X list of special-agent hopefuls, sources said. The four tested with the Fox Network on Friday for the role described by observers as a blue-collar type to contrast with David Duchovny's Fox Mulder persona. X-Files was picked up for an eighth season by Fox with Duchovny committing to do up to 11 episodes. 20th Century Fox Television declined comment."

Lou Diamond Phillips?! Now THAT would be something. Anyone see him in Stand and Deliver? I oppose Bruce Campbell only because he's been in an episode ("Terms of Endearment") relatively recently. And a Hispanic regular is something new for the show and exciting. Having Patrick as Scully's partner would make me crack up every time I see him (see the Wayne's World spoof of his T-1000 character). There are my two cents. That blurb came on the heels of this one:

"RUMOR: Stephen Rea (The Crying Game), Chris Noth (Sex and the City), or David Caruso (um...) will 'X'-mark the spot as Scully's new sidekick. False. A source at Fox nixes all three candidates, though he notes that Rea and X-Files creator Chris Carter did talk last year about a multi-episode guest spot ['The Sixth Extinction' and its sequel--CC confirmed this a while ago]. RUMOR: Casting directors are looking for a 'blue-collar' type for the part. False. While the producers aren't looking for another 'slickster' like Mulder, they're not out looking for Tom Arnold, either (thank God). [Interesting, because the newer article above confirms the blue-collar description.] RUMOR: Duchovny will appear in only two episodes of the new season. False. While the Fox source confirms Mulder will 'disappear' after the first two segments of the next season [also questionable--he has already been abducted and won't be seen until his return, unless the extra ending of 'Requiem' was filmed and will be used in the premiere episodes, or some other flashback will; maybe this comes from the rumor Bill Davis started?], his absence will last only 8 or 9 episodes--after which he'll return to finish his 11-episode commitment."

Thanks Roda93! In other news (MAN he is busy!):

"Rob Bowman has signed on to direct Spyglass Entertainment's science fiction-fantasy-action project Reign of Fire. According to Variety, the film, which will be released through Disney, will tell the post-apocalyptic story of a future Earth that finds an American teaming with a young Brit to defeat a brood of dragons that have come back to take over the world. The film's script was written by Gregg Chabot and Kevin Peterka with a rewrite by Matt Greenberg. Richard Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck will produce. Plans are to start production in February or March."

Already--some general info on a possible standalone episode for the new season! Jeffrey Bell apparently told someone that he "hopes" to write an episode about "aliens but in a surprising way." Let's hope it's not aliens in clown suits. On to some awesome merchandise news: Millennium and Harsh Realm on DVD! That's right, the shows that didn't quite make it on TV are getting another chance on DVD. Fox is "heavily considering" releasing all 9 HR episodes and the first season of MM (the other 2 to follow) in sets similar to the XF sets. The information that is known: the first Millennium set will have 6 discs, probably with not too many extras since there aren't many out there. The Harsh Realm set will be on 3 discs with more extras but it will be a more limited release, more for the fans. Possible extra features are conceptual artwork for the pilot and the original CGI animations for the FX on the show. Remember, this is all IF they are released. Thanks to ScarpX for the heads-up! On an unrelated topic, I've heard that Téa is pregnant again! If this is true then congrats to she and David! Finally, don't forget to enter X-Props every week! There's a mini banner ad out there plus a TV spot for it was shown during the "First Person Shooter" rerun! No LG ads yet....

7/13/2000

In today's Washington Post there was a blurb on Gillian Anderson's D.C. NF Inc. benefit event. The story mentioned that she would return to film The X-Files in "about a week." So that means the date that's been going around is probably right, or maybe they're starting even earlier. The date I previously posted was July 24, but I've heard July 25 lately, which is strange because it's a Tuesday. Anyway, we can assume that the premiere has been written. Which makes me wonder if the character list for the premiere posted yesterday on the newsgroup might just be legit. According to the post, which verifies the July 25 start date, we're getting another 2-part premiere like last season. It says Chris Carter wrote the script with Kim Manners directing, but no info on who's directing the second part or whether CC is also writing the third part (including the finale) alone. Here is what the post alleges (the source is apparently an unnamed Hollywood insider):

  • All-Business Agent: Male, 30s. An FBI agent who treats Skinner and Scully as suspects: guilty until proven innocent. He follows his orders as they are given to him and never questions authority. Role may appear in part two.
  • Dr. Beth Siegler: Female, late 30s. An attractive woman who has an uptight quality about her. She is Mulder's doctor. Guest star.
  • Principal: Male, late 30s. Tall and skinny and gets a bit flustered when the FBI investigates. Will appear in part two.
  • Teacher: Female.
  • Roque Arellaga: Male, 13. Deaf student.
  • FBI Agent 1: Male, 30s. Strictly-business agent.
  • Dog Owner: Male, 30s-40s. A startled jogger Scully encounters while she pursues a suspect.
  • Order Taker: Male. An employee of Last Chance Burgers.

Everything seems to add up: the unique name of the boy, the description of who appears to be Scully's new partner, the teasing name of the restaurant. This could certainly be yet another hoax, but the info has the look of a real character breakdown. Or it's just a good imitation. Time will tell. BTW "part two" above is actually part three including "Requiem." If this is true, I wonder what a school and Mulder's doctor have to do with what happened in the season finale. And, is FBI Agent 1 the same as All-Business Agent?? When will we find out the new partner's name anyway?

The official site updated with info on the "X-Props" contest and behind-the-scenes photos from the "Requiem" shoot. Also I updated the changed rerun schedule. In merchandise news, the season 2 DVD set was apparently delayed a few weeks, but it will include "even more supplements" than the season 1 set. The movie Thermos has apparently been delayed again to mid-August, and the U.K. "Millennium" video was delayed to August 30. The season 1 set will come out in France on October 18 and in Australia and the U.K. in early November (yet another delay). Finally: "Cops creator John Langley [who was a consultant for 'X-Cops'] is the latest to accuse the Fox TV empire of shortchanging its profit participants through sweetheart deals with Fox-owned TV outlets around the world."

Some of the coolest news this week was script differences from "Requiem"--how the original script differs from the aired episode. You can see them here, but the neatest part has been removed from the page. That is, the original Mulder abduction scene and the ending that was left out. A description of the former is in the new Cool Fact above. Stop reading this paragraph if you don't want to find out the original, intended ending. After Scully's last line we cut to a scene inside the spaceship. Mulder is lying on a table of some sort. A light comes from far away, and a being comes from it toward Mulder. We don't know if it's an alien or what. Cut to Mulder's face, and we see a human hand touching him. Mulder wakes up. The man standing beside him calls him "son" and Mulder realizes that he is his father. The script never says who the man is, except that he's in his early 60s and is in good health (not specifically stated--but shown by the fact that he walked to Mulder). I'll bet my left arm that it was intended to be CSM (if the scene was to be filmed), and (this wasn't specified) that the Bounty Hunter healed him after his fall. The man says "We have a lot to talk about" or something to that effect, a whining noise comes from the light, and they both walk toward it. TO BE CONTINUED.... And the script does say that, so that ending was intended to be used if the episode was a season finale. Now I wonder if there isn't something to what Bill Davis said about the two filmed endings. Maybe this cut scene was filmed, and it will be used in the season 8 premiere! If so I'm excited already. It would make a great teaser.

Anyway, there are yet more rumors going around about season 8, specifically those saying that M&S wanted to have a child, CC and DD had a "secret meeting," the first two episodes of next season will have Mulder flashbacks, and the premiere will feature the actual love scene left to our imagination in "all things." These are not true. They originate from "sources" who claim to be in-the-know on the official message board, but nothing they have ever said has been proven true, and the "facts" they have been posting are nothing but the delusions of bored shippers. But on to real news...Chris Noth may not work out as Mulder's replacement since he's in a Broadway show starting in September, and that means rehearsals starting next month. Major scheduling problems this season! Thanks Dennis Sung! One thing I forgot to mention is that Chris Noth is in Daniel Sackheim's upcoming movie, The Glass House. Maybe that's why 1013 is looking at him. But Noth isn't the only name going around. Apparently, former NYPD Blue star David Caruso is a candidate as well. Filming, according to many people, should start July 24. Now this is info on the cross issue from someone within 1013:

"It's something that the producers are aware of--in other words, the guys know the fans think Mulder is wearing Scully's cross. They won't say if it's true or not, it's just something that they might play with at the beginning of the season. Kinda like Mulder's wedding ring in 'Travelers.'"

Thanks to Elwood Blues: Stephen Hawking is in the Lone Gunmen pilot, wearing a shirt that says "BLACK HOLES SUCK"! Speaking of which, I've heard rumblings that the spinoff may already have been canceled because of bad test audience reactions and that the pilot will air as a special XF episode. I'm hoping this is not true. And thanks to Roda93 for this info: the official mag preview cover pic I posted here is actually a mock cover that the fan club produces for Diamond Comics and other such distributors. And, most importantly, the headlines are completely made up. So the new exec producer thing was probably just some kind of joke. Also the next issue should be out in mid- to late October. Well anyway, the official site came through with a new episode guide, same text and content but fitting in with the new design. In fact, the "One Son" summary is no longer cut off and the episode numbers are now correct! Another new feature on the site is showing fan pages, which is really cool.

Chris Carter will be appearing at the San Diego Comic Convention Saturday, July 22 at 1:45 p.m. in some sort of a panel. The official mag will be there for a possible exclusive interview, and hopefully he'll give out some cool tidbits. The X-Files Merchandise Web Site has moved to its own domain name, www.x-filesmerchandise.com. Check it out! Also don't forget to participate in Mission Possible: The Season 8 Campaign. Well I'm going to end this update with a few pastes. And that is all the news for the week.

"The California State Labor Commissioner has sued 20th Century Fox for failing to apologize for anti-gay remarks and actions made by Fox Television Entertainment Group chairman Sandy Grushow [against Randy Stone, who was instrumental in the casting of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in The X-Files]."

"Danielle Gelber, head of drama development for Fox, is leaving the network after eight years. The move is a result of the recent appointment of Gail Berman as the president of Fox Entertainment. Berman is expected to make several changes in the programming ranks to prepare for upcoming development. During her tenure, Gelber oversaw many of Fox's signature dramas, including The X-Files and Party of Five. She also helped develop five new dramas which are debuting this fall on the net, including The $treet and Dark Angel."

"Part of Canadian film and TV history went up in smoke last week as most of Shavick Entertainment's Vancouver studios were gutted by a fire that consumed everything from standing sets seen by millions to priceless mementos of a quarter-century career. A courtroom, police station and a make-believe alley familiar to viewers of The Commish, The X-Files and other television shows, original Ninja Turtle sets, a huge costume department that included authentic L.A. police uniforms, two sound stages, fake signage, phony tombstones, a green screen facility for special effects, a video library of stock shots and $100,000 worth of newly built sets were incinerated. Some 50 films and hundreds of hours of television series have been shot in the buildings clustered in the warehouse district at Second Avenue and Quebec Street. The June 25 fire was an uncommonly spectacular three-alarm blaze that drew the 38 firefighters on duty and another 20 called from home. Investigators have determined the blaze was most likely caused by the improper disposal of stain-soaked rags."

From Gillian Anderson's mother: "It has come to Gillian's attention that someone (or possibly several people) are going to great lengths to maintain Web sites devoted to her 5-year-old daughter. These sites have dozens of unsanctioned photos--pictures taken without permission by opportunistic photographers out to make a buck. Now the Web sites are being moved from place to place. Each time they are forced to shut down they pop up somewhere else. The owner or owners are carefully disguising their identity. Please help Gillian in her efforts to protect both her daughter's personal security and her privacy by not visiting these photo sites and by discouraging others from doing so. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. -- Thank You."

7/2/2000

Not too much has been going on. There's a "summary" of the season 8 premiere floating around, but it's completely fake so don't worry. The biggest news lately is word that 1013 has an actor chosen for the role of Scully's new partner:

"Mr. Big: The Xiest Man in Prime Time? From the casting grapevine, here's the most fun scuttlebutt my sources divulge: Law & Order and Sex and the City star Chris Noth is being sought after as the new character to fill David Duchovny's airtime on the new season of The X-Files.... As for Noth, who--despite his alleged dalliance with the, uh, socially active Winona Ryder--remains the sexiest man in prime time, he certainly has the ability to make even the most rabid X-Files fans mutter 'David who?'"

Check this out--a preview of issue 15 of the official magazine (picture of the special--not newsstand--cover here): "In this issue, definitive reports clear up the rumors concerning the fate of the series, and shed light on the next X-Files feature film. And as always, you'll get a first-hand look at the internal workings of The X-Files' mysterious world with a behind-the-scenes visit to the Los Angeles set featuring dozens of new, color photos and revealing interviews with the show's award-winning creative team. Plus, don't miss the detailed Season Seven episode guide, packed with plenty of insightful commentary from the cast and crew[, and a preview of the Lone Gunmen spinoff]." Now the interesting (disturbing?) thing is...if you look closely at the picture of the cover, one of the headlines talks about an interview with "the series' new executive producer." What??

More on the movie Thermoses...the license has apparently been taken care of and they've already been made ready for release. Apparently that will happen sometime this month; only a limited number of them was made. Anyway...I totally forgot to post this: Chris Carter's wife Dori Carter (a.k.a. Dori Pierson) is coming out with a new critically acclaimed book, Beautiful Wasps Having Sex. Now it doesn't have to do with FTF, but rather an aspiring screenwriter in Hollywood (i.e. Dori; the book is semi-autobiographical). Finally, Bill Davis's comment on the "new mytharc" referred to next season (in addition to the next movie?). So he means that next season will deal with new mythology concepts. That's it for now.

Back again. There was quite a bit of news while I was gone, so here I go again making up for it. William B. Davis was at a recent convention and Jason told me some of the interesting things he said. WBD "understands" that Mulder will be in the first 2 episodes of next season, then he will come back toward the end. I've also heard that the initial appearances could be flashback scenes already filmed. Remember, major grain of salt here. Davis is not currently contracted for season 8, but he said that he is in the rough writing stages of another episode. That will certainly bring back his character in some form or another. Also on the second movie, he said that it might involve a "new mytharc." More doubtfully, he also said (Jason swears he was serious): "As far as I heard, there are going to be more seasons to come. 10 seasons I heard." The crowd apparently cheered after he said this. I for one don't believe it for a second, and remember, WBD has in the past shown that he knows as much as we do. Jason also found out about a fan club kit peculiarity: "selected kits" additionally included a magnet and an extra poster of Mulder's office, no reason given. Lucky bastards!

More news still. Frank Spotnitz said that there will be 20 episodes next season. He is also "making an appearance on a panel at the Universe 2000 Expo in Pasadena, CA on July 15-16." The panel is a discussion on "Visioning the Future." And he had this to say on the next movie: "I don't know if there will be another movie if things aren't successful this year. It all depends on what happens." And finally, we get some info on Scully's new partner: "Rick Millikan has sent out the casting breakdown for the new series regular on The X-Files. Male, 30s to 40s, ex-police officer, blue-collar, masculine." Wow. Also I have heard rumblings that Scully's baby will turn out to be two babies--twins. Now this is from the webmaster of the official site, posted on the official message board:

"I asked the producers about [the necklace]. They said they'd read that somewhere and couldn't figure out where it came from. He was not wearing it. There was no cut scene where she gives it to him. JS thought it might seem like M's jacket zipper was something. But it was not intentional, and not a cross. Does that help? Also, there is no 'missing' kiss scene. I've been reading all over the Net that someone supposedly heard it or saw it. Doesn't exist, never has. Not in the script. I saw the rough cut and it wasn't shot. What's on screen is what was intended."

I'm thinking maybe Kim Manners or David Duchovny added in the cross thing like DD did Mulder's wedding ring. From someone who read the post: "He/she also reported that the writers came back to work this week [I guess last week now] but that the rest of the behind-the-scenes crew is still on hiatus." Anyway here's an interesting quote from GA: "I was interested in directing and got some offers from cable networks but I thought the best thing would be to start with our show because it's familiar." Don't forget to check out the auction celebrating Nick Lea's birthday and benefiting the Red Cross. And, did I miss this? "In a recent Entertainment Weekly reader poll, The X-Files was voted best dramatic series, while David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were chosen favorite TV actor and actress." Now I'm going to paste parts of two articles:

"X-Files actress Gillian Anderson is believed to be in talks to star on the London stage. The actress, who plays Dana Scully, is said to be in discussions with several theatres including the Almeida. Gillian, 31, also checked out the Gainsborough Studio on Tuesday night, where actor Ralph Fiennes stars in Coriolanus. 'The place is amazing and the actors are so wonderful,' she said. Gillian Anderson has ambitions to star on the London stage. The actress, committed to an eighth series of the TV show, is a big fan of the capital, having lived in Crouch End, North London, as a child. She would join the growing list of Hollywood stars to have performed in the West End in recent years."

"The X-Files, one of the only U.S. television shows to succeed in Japan, will return to the land of the rising sun in December after a two-year absence. Satellite broadcaster BS Asahi will broadcast the show weekly in a high-definition format in its primetime lineup. The series will start from the fifth season and is billed as a major feature for the broadcaster, which is trying to build a core audience of company workers in their 30s and 40s. The sci-fi thriller ended its successful three-year broadcast run in 1998 as the only U.S. program in a regular primetime spot on a Japanese network. When The X-Files first hit Japan, it was the No. 1-rated show in its time slot, although ratings subsequently tapered off."

David Yeldon has informed me that the latest date for the U.K. season 1 DVD set release is October 16. Also, accompanying the long trailer of X-Men, the new long TV spot also has clips from the FTF score. And, according to the X-Files Merchant: "The license expires at the end of this month for the movie Thermos, and if it is not renewed chances are it won't be released." Sigh. Finally, just clearing up the (my?) confusion on the Roots of Conspiracy game at the official season 1 DVD site and the game on the actual DVD. The DVD game is different, with a different name (Seeds of Deception).

I have some more news before I go. The spinoff pilot is done and I've heard some good buzz on it. You can even download the opening sequence, which I guess is included in the pilot (unlike CC's other pilots), here. It looks really cool. Also the official site now links to the Roots of Conspiracy game on the season 1 DVD box set Web site. It might be just a demo of the real game that comes with the set, or the whole thing. Also the site has a transcript of sorts of the fan chat event for "Requiem." And it put up the July rerun calendar; I added the dates to the Season 7 Spoilers page. Finally, there will be an official contest called "X-Props" starting on July 14 at the site.

Just a few things today. I've heard that Wave 9, or whatever it will be called, is coming out later this year. It would have episodes from the first half of season 5. Also (thanks Terry Vaughan) the "Millennium" video has been delayed in the U.K. until July 3. Finally, I have two Emmy consideration trade ads for the show here (2000) and here (a previous season, not sure which). And that is all. I will be away for about a week, maybe longer, but I promise I will catch up when I get back.

There is more floating around about the cut kiss scene in "Requiem." And in addition to that, some lines were cut from the M&S bed scene too. Read on:

"It has Scully and Mulder, instead of hugging in that hall scene, clutched in a tight and passionate embrace. In one version, Skinner walks out, sees them kissing, and immediately walks back into the room where everyone was. In the other, it is just the two of them kissing. Scully walks out into the hall (I couldn't actually see it but from the sound, I'll be as accurate as possible). From what it sounded like, I know for a fact she gets dizzy again. She kinds of lets out her breath in a whoosh and it sounds like she grips that bench outside for support. Mulder comes out, and, seeing Scully, quickly walks over to where she is sitting/kneeling/lying (can't tell from the sound) and my guess is he hoists her up on the bench there. He then says 'I'm taking you to a doctor' and kind of pulls her up onto her feet. But here it sounds like she stops him and says, 'Mulder, I'll go as soon as we're finished here. You need me here right now.' And he says, 'Scully, you ARE finished here.' She says 'What? (a little choked up) Mulder, what do you mean? You need help on this case' and then the regular dialogue starts up, the whole spiel about 'I don't want to risk...losing you.' THEN, the good part. She says: 'Dammit, Mulder, I'm just as worried about losing you as you are about losing me! Don't you realize that I go to bed every night wondering if I'll have you as a partner for the next day? (This last part was paraphrased...it goes something like that but not exactly. You get the general idea.) What you said about the personal risks, they're too great! Mulder, stop worrying about me! (she tears up here) I don't know what I would do if I lost you.' I guess she's crying at this point here. There's a sort of choking sound, like a sob but she holds it back. But the music starts up, similar to the music at the end of 'Amor Fati.' Then, since I can't see it, I hear them kissing. (By the way, here are my thoughts on this part. It's not an 'eat your face off' kind of kiss, but from the sound of it, definitely not a 'Millennium' kiss either. It's very passionate.) Unfortunately, it only lasts for about seven seconds before who I assume was Skinner, judging by the heavy footsteps, comes out of the room to see if the two of them are OK. I guess then (because I still can't see the screen) he walks back in, closing the door behind him. I don't know if he was smiling or what. The second clip is just of them kissing. This is a blooper (no swelling music). They do all the same things up until they kiss. You hear them kissing and someone says 'Hey, cut! What's wrong?' and Mitch Pileggi yells that the door is jammed."

I have heard also of another take, or possibly the same one, in which the kiss lasts 10 seconds and there is tongue involved. Here's the deal on the other cut scene: "Well I shouldn't say this but there was a cut reference to something along those lines in the bed scene that was not shown, that really did say point-blank that they were together in a big way, remember if this was to be the last season they would have left in the hallway kiss and some added lines in the bed scene but they were not used, if you look you can see Scully was a little uncomfortable because they agreed no messing around on cases." The scenes exist on film and some people had them on video, but it hasn't surfaced on the Internet yet. Which brings me to another cut scene that I just heard about from "Arcadia": "It was an improvised [kiss] scene David and Gillian tried to get included." Anyway, I was sent this information:

"FOX.com is looking to build a Los Angeles-based team to expand The X-Files Official Site. In addition to building content features for OS, the team will be responsible for developing original Web properties for other shows in the sci-fi genre, such as The Lone Gunmen, Dark Angel, and Fearsum. Those interested in the following available positions should send their resumes in an attachment to ejobs@newsdigital.com. Put the words 'X-Files Jobs' in the subject line. No phone calls please."

Now then, Ten Thirteen has sent out its Emmy consideration submissions: "En Ami" (William B. Davis) for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (see the eBay auction with a picture of the tape) and "The Amazing Maleeni" and "Closure" both for Best Drama (tape). Also for those without Flash, check out this address for an HTML-based version of the official site home page. But I think it links to the regular Flash pages. "From June 17-19, webmasters and fans will be protesting outside the Fox headquarters in Los Angeles, CA" in Fanstock 2000: check out the site. More links still: I've always been looking for a transcript of the DVD commentary, and here it is. And support the campaign in the U.K. for the BBC to start showing season 7 episodes from where it left off midway through by going to this site. Anyway, the Australian "Closure" video came with a character puzzle card, and a promo flyer that includes a picture of the movie video's puzzle card. The "Millennium" video came with neither a card nor any special interviews. Finally, the latest trailer for X-Men features music from the movie.

Latest on David's number of episodes: He has apparently signed for 3 months of filming, not 11 episodes, meaning anywhere from 6-11 episodes next season for him. As I see it, 3 months (I assume the last 3 months of the season, all at once) is max 92 days, leaving enough time for 9 episodes, 10 at most. That's counting weekends, too. Eleven is plausible if there are some Mulder-lite episodes. But if DD wants to direct again, that will also take up time. Only time will tell.

No news, just wanted to put in my two cents on the apparent consensus that the boy on the beach in "Amor Fati" is Mulder's son. I completely disagree with that. He is nothing more than what he is shown to be, and people are reading way too much into it. The boy says, "It's your spaceship. You're destroying it" to Mulder yet after the episode first aired people wondered who he was. He symbolized the "boy" in Mulder--the stubborn Mulder who wanted his sister back and who played the hero. This is shown throughout the whole episode as CSM chides Mulder for being "Prince Hamlet." After "Requiem" it seems that everyone thinks the boy is Mulder's son and that the baby will be a boy. No, he was just used to show Mulder's choices and the consequences of them (destroying/rebuilding the "sand ship" etc.). I also remember that there was a line cut from the episode that supports what I'm saying even more--I double-checked it: The boy says "I am the path not taken." The other thing that is being used a lot as support for the "boy=son" theory is the brief shots of the toddler walking from his mother to his father. That's nice, except the only purpose those scenes have is to foreshadow that CSM is Mulder's father. The toddler is with his mother when Mulder is in the hospital room with Teena; she leaves and CSM enters in Mulder's dream, right after the toddler goes to his father.
