11/21/2000

Let us wish Dori Carter a happy birthday on this 11/21. Well, the first MOTW was last Sunday, and although the monster wasn't all that interesting, it was good to be back to good ol' standalones--no cuteness, all darkness. The monster effects and makeup were outstanding of course, but the problem was that it had no personality! It was just out there killing people. And, it was a combination of several other XF monsters. But the monster wasn't the main point of this episode; Scully dealing with Mulder's loss is. The nameplate scenes and Scully dealing with Doggett and her "believer" status were the best parts, although the attack scenes were wonderfully gruesome. The story was a little thin. I did like the whole radar system though. Everyone probably noticed the OTHER new opening sequence, without Mulder's badge and instead of the Mulder/Scully scene from "Squeeze" we get a Scully/Doggett one from "Patience." BTW the ep got a 9.2/13 rating. Now see if you can believe this info on 8X12: "I'm not making this up. This is a monster-of-the-week episode that has to do with a beggar from India with no legs who gets around on a squeaky cart and has powers to alter perception." Could this be a Shibes episode?? In OS news, X-Props II is over (my bets are still on the nameplate as the secret item). New Mitch Pileggi interview clips are also up, plus the Mytharc Tracker is finally online! This thing, although a little slow, is amazing. The interesting thing is that the site says the background graphics for the Tracker are taken from FTF's black oil opening sequence. The thing is, it's completely different! A previous version made for the movie but never used? There are also two neat clips that show how the Mulder leap from "Without" was filmed.

For clips of deleted "Within" scenes, check out this site. Also a picture of the season 7 episode guide (which will not have a tagline title) can be found here. Now I have some news (kind of) on an item much in demand: "Many people are wondering where are the season 7 bloopers!? I have heard conflicting reports that they were done, and that they were not done. Until I actually have them in my hand, I will assume they were not done. Strange since they did bloopers for the first six seasons. I will update everyone as soon as I hear anything." This is from Emerald City Poster Company (treegate@aol.com). In other merchandise news, the season 2 DVDs are already out in some Virgin Megastores. Some details on the FTF rerelease: the official release date is now January 23. There are reports that it will include the missing CSM end scene (in addition to the other extras)! Tracks: English (DTS), English (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), French (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), English. Subtitles: English and Spanish. The packaging is a Keep Case. Banners, banners, and more banners: ScarpX found another one, promoting the premiere. Click here. Also here's an interesting CC quote: "Carter had planned to do less mythology episodes this season, but now he realizes that any show that has Mulder in it 'becomes a kind of mythology episode.'"

From an interview with RP: "Patrick's brother, Richard Patrick, is the lead singer for the rock band Filter. Will the band ever do a song for X? 'You know,' says Patrick, 'Chris [series creator Chris Carter] and I have talked about it a little bit. I talked to my brother about it. I said, "If they come to you and ask you to do a song, will you do it?" He said, "Absolutely." He's a big X-Files fan. He loves the show.'" Of course Filter had a song in "D.P.O." plus was on both XF soundtracks. Finally this is great Rob Bowman news: "From an unnamed mailing list, passed on to the xf-news list: 'X-Files director Rob Bowman has signed on to direct Bruce Willis in the 4th Die Hard movie! Bowman, who directed the X-Files movie [in 1998], has agreed to follow John McTiernan and Renny Harlin and direct Willis in his most famous role as Detective John McClane. It's reported that Bowman and Willis have already agreed [on] the story to the 4th film, [in which] Willis will pursue mercenaries that have kidnapped his son.'"

Psyched for season 8! I enjoyed "Without," but for some reason I liked "Within" a little better. The Bounty Hunter storyline was the highlight of course, like "Colony"/"End Game" on a larger scale. The last scene was fantastic, and I'm liking Doggett even more now. Is it me or were TLG supposed to be in this ep? I had a few problems with it: I still can't take the "Scully's Theme" music, it's too much for me. Moby's "My Weakness" in "Closure" was no problem, I loved that...but not this. (Mark Snow may have written this music BTW, but I'm not sure either way.) That goes for some of the other music too, such as while Scully was "chasing" Thea on her bike. Overwrought. (It wouldn't have hurt to make Scully run a little right? That part dragged on.) Other than that the music was exceptional. Well at least the location text is back, with a hospital named after co-executive producer Michelle MacLaren no less. (Speaking of which, Mat Beck's official title is visual effects producer. There is also a new associate producer; I have no idea who it is or what the job is for.) We also saw the shortened version of the new opening sequence (and the shortest teasers ever in the past two episodes) for the first time, and it seems that this season Ten Thirteen Productions' "I Made This!" screen at the end is back to a bigger logo--the smaller one started last year with the HR episode "Inga Fossa." Mythology note for "Without": How did Skinner survive his exposure to the green blood? Scully told the doctors to submerge him in cold water like she did with Mulder in "End Game" and I think this came up in "Emily" too. Why was this not shown? Either a cut scene or it wasn't mentioned at all to not confuse people. FS said somewhere that they are trying to make it as easy as possible for new viewers to understand eps without knowing the background of the show. (Like not showing that the ABH healed the abductees exposed to purity control in "Requiem.") Why didn't the green blood affect Scully or Doggett? Ever since it's been around, if it comes out of a dead hybrid or shapeshifter it is harmless. This whole 3-parter is a fantastic example of continuity (no matter what people say). I will update the Mythology section as soon as I have time to the premiere episodes.

From the Robert Patrick chat transcript just posted at the OS, we have some info on 8X10 (now shooting; which episode is currently filming is always listed in the Season 8 Spoilers page): "It involves a man who's been exposed to some 'smart' metal. We're basically dealing with a metal man." RP's enthusiasm is contagious--what a great guy! Also check out the Haven for screen grabs of the storyboard (in the 1013 offices) for 8X08! It's from the BBC documentary. Also at the site are even more clips from it. Anyway, the print ad for "Patience" is here. In ratings news, "Without" finished at #33 with 9.0/13 from last week's 9.5/13 BUT: "The second week of new episodes for Fox Broadcasting's The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle and The X-Files led the network to a win in the adults 18-49 demographic Sunday night, according to overnight ratings data from Inside.com. X-Files was the highest-rated show of the night in the key demo with an 8.5 rating/18 share, good enough to top ABC's celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire by half a ratings point." BTW "Within" finished #20 for the week not #21. Canadian fans weren't left out: the Nov. 18-24 TV Guide will be out in both Scully and Doggett covers! Finally, last Saturday's VIP featured not only Dean Haglund who played himself in a previous episode, but also Brian Thompson as a serial killer! That's it for now.

11/11/2000 *Updated*

UPDATE: Sad news. The Alph recently posted its last update ever. It will go offline at the end of January so check it out.

Courtesy of the OS, we have the title of 8X11 and more info: "The mythology-laced episode numbered 8X11 follows Doggett's intensive pursuit into the truth behind Mulder's disappearance. He gets a helping hand from Skinner and the Lone Gunmen. 'The Gift,' written by Frank Spotnitz, tracks a mysterious creature with unique capabilities in Squamash, Pennsylvania. The episode, directed by Kim Manners, is scheduled to air on Sunday, Feb. 4th." Also according to the OS, the current airing sequence after "Redrum" is 8X09, 8X10, 8X12, then 8X11. 8X08 is not mentioned! And there's even more detailed info on "The Gift" here: "This is the episode that seems to explain the car rental receipts, and they were not for Raleigh. Scully is for some reason laid up in bed [because of her pregnancy], and Doggett is sent out to investigate an Indian folklore soul-eater beast that it appears Mulder was investigating in the spring. Mulder does appear in this episode in flashbacks to what he was doing during that trip. Skinner is featured prominently in this episode as well. At this time the whole episode is not yet written." And: "From what is written, and that is an early draft, it does seem this episode brings back Doggett's promise to Scully to find Mulder; whether he's successful or not is unknown at this time. Through the course of what is written it is not crystal-clear, but it seems Doggett believes Mulder shot (and killed?) a transient soul-eater in May 2000. It also seems that if he did so, he did so to protect someone. There are flashbacks of Mulder written; one is of Mulder questioning Marie and Paul Hangemuhl. Marie had gone missing for a few days and Mulder tries to figure it out. Doggett questions both in present day as well. Sheriff Frey is also present in both flashback and present day. At one point the Sheriff says his first name is Kurt; I'd imagine this is no reference to the Kurt Crawfords--however I have not seen enough to know. None of the episode that I have information on contains Scully or any scene with Mulder and Scully in the present or flashback. Skinner is featured in this episode--and it seems he may lie to Doggett, though the reason is unknown at this time. It is also interesting to note that it seems Mulder didn't mention this case in any of his files." And there's even some preliminary info on a NEW CHARACTER to be introduced in 8X14: "...A new female FBI agent character is planned to be introduced. Carter is starting to audition next week for someone '30s and attractive'--it's been made clear that the character is not meant to replace Gillian." "Without" hasn't even aired yet and I can't wait to find out what could possibly be going on in the Feb. episodes and beyond! Another interesting note is that Mat Beck has returned this season as visual effects supervisor. He left after season 3 (I think) to do movie FX (including Volcano and FTF) and also wrote "Wetwired." Bill Millar took over after the move to L.A. but apparently he left.

I guess it's been around for a while, but the official site for TXF on BBC is at www.bbc.co.uk/cult/xfiles/. Posted there now are video clips and transcripts of CC and FS in the documentary just aired there on Chris Carter and TXF. The OS has more info at its news page, plus other video clips. In other news, ScarpX has finally found the Internet season 8 promo banner we've been scouring the Net for. Check it out here. Finally, the "Requiem" trilogy will be released in Australia in a currently untitled video Jan. 16.

Back again! I am still recovering from the shock of "Within" (in a good way). The fact that there were surprises and a great new look (but still keeping the old-fashioned feel), after 7 years, was astounding. Where should I start? How about with this: Robert Patrick gave a fantastic performance! Sorry, and this is not meant to slight Mulder or Scully, but Doggett rules. I'm a fan of his already. Now I'm sure everyone saw the new opening sequence. I'm glad they stuck to the original with a few cool exceptions. Was it me or were Mulder and Scully's new pictures a little odd? And was I the only one waiting for a "Mulder is Out There" tagline? But I need to move on. CC did it again. This episode was the perfect mix of character development, action, surprises, mythology, scares, gore--you name it. He started out slowly after the paralyzing finale, then worked up to one of the best climaxes ever. Who expected Mulder's continuing illness or gravestone? Or that the aliens have been covering everything up all along? Kim Manners, BTW, did some of his best work with this episode. He came up with a very distinctive look, combining slow-mo shots (sometimes mixed in with that vocal score which was a little over-the-top, and was not written by Mark Snow) with a handheld style. Put together, it fit the ep perfectly. Take my favorite shot, a disturbed Doggett slowly running his hand through his hair looking at the Gibson file, then turning to the other FBI agents. Snow's music during this and during the desert scenes was wonderfully disturbing and heart-pounding as well. What else can I rave about? Gillian Anderson's acting, the startling Mulder-torture scenes, and the last shot--Mulder's face looking strangely sinister. Even though we all knew it was coming up, it was still shocking. So my theory of what's going to happen next, even if it is a little crazy? What if not only Mulder morphs into the Bounty Hunter, but Doggett also morphs--into a rebel! That would explain the mysterious file, if the rebels used Doggett to find Gibson for his immunity. Hint: Don't forget the "mirage" Scully saw at the gas station, and that we subsequently saw again behind the stop sign.

There are even more things of note, most interestingly the complete lack of location/time info at the bottom left, something we've all come to get used to. Notice CC wrote the necessary info into the dialogue, with Skinner mentioning "Requiem"'s events the day before to take the place of "One Day Later." Also there was a sign in front of the school to take the place of text. But such text wouldn't have fit anyway, with all the slow-mo and dreams. And I bet those are more than dreams, and that this is a continuation of Mulder & Scully's subconscious link from "The Blessing Way." Some other interesting things: Tena's name is spelled with one E on the gravestone, the date of Samantha's death is 1979 on it which agrees with "Closure," Gibson's middle name is Andrew...what else...we saw more of Scully's apartment building and her landlord, which was nice...and there was a goof: Gibson first appeared in 1998, not 1997. That crazy CC! From the credits, we know that Jeffrey Bell and Greg Walker are executive story editors, and Steve Maeda is story editor. Why isn't JB co-producer already?? Another thing I noticed was that the movie music still hasn't run its course yet--some remnants of it were played in the first meeting with Kersh. At least the music fit the score for the ep. This is one you can watch over and over again. Perfect balance of questions and answers. They've done it again, and I can't wait until next week!

Now to the NEWS. First off, more "Requiem" cut scenes can be found here. In upcoming episode news, 8X11 is written by Frank Spotnitz with Kim Manners directing. And CC confirmed FS's old quote that we'd get more on Skinner's nano-problem and Krycek this season. At the OS, the "Within" synopsis is already up, and there are "Without" pictures and a video clip. The CC chat transcript is also up, and there's another X-Props II promo banner. Speaking of which, I'm changing my bet to Mulder's nameplate for the secret prop. BTW here's the neat "Without" print ad. The auction has some amazing stuff up, including a rebel fire starter and Scully's machete from "The Sixth Extinction" (rubber of course). RP's chat is also Nov. 13. I noticed one more new premiere promo TV spot before "Within" aired, so that makes 7 in all plus the Fox preview. Ratings news: the final count is that XF ranked #21 for the week (:-/) with 15.9 million viewers. Fortunately: "Although the season premiere didn't beat last year's numbers in households (9.3/13 this year vs. last year's 10.6/16), it did beat last year's average once Who Wants to Be a Millionaire moved into the same timeslot (9.3/13 vs. the season-average 8.0/12). In adults 18-49, the season premiere outperformed Millionaire, as well as in adults 18-34, men 18-49, 18-34, 25-54, women 18-34 and teens. The paranormal FBI drama was also the highest-rated program overall for the night in adults 18-49, 25-54, women 18-49 and men 25-54." It "finished 10 percent below last year's premiere rating among adults 18-49 (a preliminary 8.8/18 vs. last year's 9.8/20). But the veteran Fox series still managed a rebound of sorts with the show's highest 18-49 score since last November."

From the OS people, more info on the Carter Foundation: "The Carter Foundation, set up by Chris, is brand-new, and will benefit science education. They will soon be putting out a press release, and we'll provide that information on the Ten Thirteen page once it's announced. We had to jump the gun with the auction to coincide with the season 8 premiere, but we will have more on the Foundation soon." From Dean Haglund about the official LG site: "There's going to be a really cool, interactive site with cutting-edge technology, if all the deals come through. Of course, my own site, I had a webmaster on it, but it's sort of languishing in its updatedness only because of big, fancy contracts. I'm restricted to what I can do. I used to just be able to blab about anything, now I'm beholden to Rupert Murdoch, and I have to run everything past him before I can post it. But there's not a sympathetic ear in the house, so it's no use complaining." :-/ Finally:

"Tobacco use is responsible for nearly one of every five deaths in the U.S. For this reason, Discovery Health Channel is taking part in the annual Great American Smokeout by dedicating a block of programming to discussing the addiction that claims more than 400,000 lives a year. Discovery Health Channel stands behind the American Cancer Society's campaign aimed at helping smokers curb the addiction for at least one day, in hopes that they will quit forever. To help with this mission, William B. Davis, best known for his role as the Cigarette-Smoking Man on the television series The X-Files, will narrate the special I QUIT! which premieres on the Discovery Health Channel on Thursday, November 16 from 8-9 p.m. (ET)."

Also a note: There are a bunch of pictures linked to in pages on this site that FortuneCity won't display because it doesn't process links from other service providers such as GeoCities. So I am working on making these pics available again.

Tomorrow is the big day! And today we have some more info on 8X09 and 8X10. The latter "takes place in Muncie and has to do with robotics." I'd bet that is Jeffrey Bell's invincibility episode. CC said on the radio yesterday that he is working on the episode. I don't know if that means rewriting/editing or actually writing or cowriting but we can probably assume the former. In fact, in an update on CC's work this season: "Carter has stepped in to write or rewrite six of the show's 10 episodes thus far." RP also said that 8X09's weirdness about seeing targets through walls has to do with the eyesight of the brothers in the ep. CC has further confirmed some info on the next movie also: "The story is kind of developing right now. We have a big idea, it will be a standalone, rather than a mythology episode like we did in the first one." And from CC also, this is a development no one saw coming: "Well, there was an explanation but you didn't actually see the death [of Spender], but his father actually did him in. And uh...he'll be back but it will be in flashback, but he will play a part." All right! Even more season 8 info is that 8X08 will air in February, supporting my theory from last update. From Kim Manners on the episode: "Her pregnancy is going to be a conspiracy." And from Frank Spotnitz: "I suspect [season 8] will be the last year for us--for this creative team. I never say never. I never thought we would last this long. I don't know what will happen beyond this year. We definitely have a plan of what will get us to the end of this season and where the characters will be. It can certainly go beyond this year. Whether it will or not, I don't know." This is getting scary...another creative team?? No way. BTW FoxFlash has a "Roadrunners" pic up.

The Mark Snow chat yesterday ended up being a Jeff Charbonneau chat (MS had a family emergency). He is Snow's music editor. He said some interesting things about the music this season...for example, it is a mix of ambient and melodic scores, more orchestral, and there is a new Scully theme. He also said that CC himself chose the Moby song "My Weakness" for "Closure." One thing JC wants to try is doing an episode with very little music to see how it plays out. And it doesn't look like another XF score album will be coming out. Anyway, the Mark Snow chat will be rescheduled. In fan club news, the site was updated and there will be even more there immediately following the premiere: new features and merchandise, t-shirts, posters, photos, and scripts (including "Within"). Already added recently are new merchandise and issue #16 for preordering. The two covers will be of Doggett (fan club) and Scully, Skinner, and Doggett. The OS, BTW, has info on the special screenings across the country of the premiere episodes. Also the episode guide is updated to "Within" with pictures and a video clip, and the new Flash intro is up. The countries represented by the CC chat Monday: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Caribbean, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Wow. In other merchandise news, the rerelease of the FTF DVD has been moved up to December 26. The original DVD will no longer be made available after that. All of the original features will be included in the new version, but it doesn't look like we'll get anything new except as previously noted, DTS/DD 5.1 sound and anamorphic widescreen.

Howard Gordon news: "Fox Broadcasting Co. has ordered a pilot for a live-action take on the comic book series Ball and Chain, a Moonlighting-meets-Buffy the Vampire Slayer vehicle about a couple who are inadvertently endowed with superpowers just as they are about to get a divorce. Fox Entertainment president Gail Berman has put the project on the fast track for production to begin in January. The show, based on the comic book by Scott Lobdell, is a co-production of 20th Century Fox Television and Regency Television. Howard Gordon (The X-Files) and Molly Newman (Maximum Bob) will co-write and executive produce the pilot with Lobdell. Todd Holland, who recently won an Emmy for his work on Fox's Malcolm in the Middle, has signed on as director." Click here to download portions of the premiere electronic press kit. Finally, thanks Frank, Conspiracy FreeK for the code, and keep 'em coming!

Sorry for the lack of updates. Well there has been plenty going on. First off, THIS SUNDAY is the premiere! For spoilers I will start with 8X08/8X09 info. 8X09 will air on January 7, meaning it will air before 8X08 (which it has been confirmed will air in January also). One thing that would explain this is that 8X08 is part 1 of a 2- or 3-parter, shooting out of order because of DD's movie Evolution filming right now. 8X10 might still not be part 2, and it could air after 8X09 and then we'd get the multi-parter. If 8X10 is not a mythology episode I'd assume it is Jeffrey Bell's invincibility story. Which makes me wonder where John Shiban is, since he's the only writer this season who hasn't written an episode. He must be working a lot on the spinoff, but I hope he gets in a last solo ep. On the subject of the spinoff, does anyone have any info on the episode currently filming (1LGM01)? Or any others? Back to 8X08, there were some set reports. Details on the teaser are out there but those are, well, too detailed for me. From the reports we got this info: "Scully, Skinner, and Doggett have a clandestine, nighttime meeting in a Washington, D.C. deli/diner.... Doggett arrives driving a silver Ford F-150 with a double cab.... In a sequence outside the same restaurant, I would guess it's when they're all leaving, Doggett has a mild confrontation with Scully outside by the car with Skinner seeming to back her up.... A woman was waiting for Scully in her car all along, and when we saw her on set and out of the car, she was wearing a pregnant lady costume.... The PA also said that after they finish filming this one, they have a break for a while, and then they'll shoot the eps in which Mulder will appear. Mulder should be back in time for February sweeps.... Plus, I read today that CSM has signed on to do 4 episodes this season." Wow! BTW the "break" above does not mean winter hiatus (obviously since 8X09 is shooting now); it must be referring to the MOTW(s) between 8X08 and the concluding ep(s) in which Mulder returns. BTW DD is not in 8X08 as I speculated last update. He was spotted on the set of his movie not TXF! :-| Now some info from Frank Spotnitz on season 8: A lot more will be learned about Mulder later this season and in the premiere episodes; there will be a flashback episode to last season; this season will show more emotional sides to Scully; there will be more about alien DNA in humans toward the end of the season; and Mulder will be in all of the last 6 episodes. Now this is interesting: the latest TV Guide pronounced that Mulder will appear in "Redrum"! I will assume, however, that this is some sort of mistake. The official magazine made it sound like it had absolutely nothing to do with him. Or maybe that was done on purpose to surprise us??

In interesting CC news, he accepted the invitation of two X-Philes and went to their wedding on 10/13 in Las Vegas! Entertainment Weekly gave "Within" an A-, citing lots of action scenes and an "increasingly forceful" Scully. Time for OS news. You can now send questions for the CC chat Nov. 6 in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. There is also a new Doggett/RP bio up, and the auction now has a beefed-up XF design. There are also names for the mythology guide (Mytharc: A Pathfinder to the Conspiracy) and the new online game (Pathogen Unknown: The X-Files Interactive Adventure), coming soon. The "fan forum" is an unmoderated chat Nov. 1 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Here's a better description of Mytharc: "A visual representation of the tangled conspiracies that make up the X-Files plotlines looks like the tentacles of an alien--at least on the flashily redesigned official Web site that debuts Nov. 1 [I think it's still the same design we know and love, with new stuff added, but I could be wrong!]. The site includes The Mytharc, a multimedia guide to the entire conspiracy, dating back to 1946. Ingeniously built by 17-year-old art student Bobby Radboy, The Mytharc can be reorganized to show every instance of, say, Mulder encountering black oil, or what happened in Area 51 in 1975. We're not sure if the site required special knowledge of physics or math--but it looks like something the Lone Gunmen might have concocted." There are also pictures up at the OS from the XF premiere premiere (!). The FX site for the eBallot Sweepstakes is now up here. Finally in this category, a walk-on role in an episode this season is up for auction here!

GA won Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards for House of Mirth! Back to TXF, there is a new promo out, here. Also the promo that was shown after "Requiem" is the same as promo #4 except the end Mulder torture scene is different. That can be downloaded here. Promo #4 (also new) is now available here. Plus check out this Fox public service announcement by Mitch Pileggi. There are also 2 banners advertising X-Props II out there, here (small) and here.

More pics. I found two more XF movie phone cards (!) from Japan, here and here. There is a print ad for the premiere, and I also have more detailed pics of the season 7 video box set thanks to David Yeldon: video 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. David also told me that the U.K. version of the season 2 DVD set is rumored to be out in March 2001. Also a pic of the Flukeman action figure packaging is up here. That's it--also some pictures on the site may be down. I will have this fixed soon.

Thanks to Mulder_Fan001, the Cool Fact from last week is now more accurate. See above. And finally, we now have details on the new opening sequence, starting with "Within": "What we know and love at the beginning and then [it changes] when the badges come up. New photos for Mulder & Scully, plus a Doggett badge. We then see a fetus, Mulder falling into the eye from the end of the credits, only the eye is now Scully's. 'The Truth is Out There' [as always]." And more info on 8X09...it is now more obvious how what we heard before ties into what FS said in the official mag: "Folks are being shot through walls with no means of seeing the victims (for instance, a shot fired from a rooftop goes through an attic and vents to kill a man). And it appears that a brother-run exterminator company in Worcester, Mass. is killing rats of more than the rodent variety." Also someone who saw 8X08 shooting said that DD is in it! Changing the subject to TLG, John Shiban leaked this neat "what to expect" info in the official fan club site's latest news update: "The Gunmen are going to be facing the bad guys of the new economy, the dot-com evil trying to steal your personal information or trying to manipulate your computer at home. The new villains of the new millennium, rather than the old conspiracy, X-Files people. And so you get the impossible, thrilling mission and the nail-biting tension, but at the same time, you can't help but have fun with these guys." And now, here is a listing of all that we can expect in the next few weeks from the official site, from an e-mail sent out to people on the OS mailing list:

  • The new contest is X-Props II, which started yesterday. This time the prize is an actual prop, and each week they give away another clue as to what it is. There are 4 weekly winners and a grand-prize winner. I'm guessing the prop is the "I Want to Believe" poster, and from the first clue that could be right...so far. What's interesting is that they say the prop will have a big role in season 8...hmm....
  • The auction (Oct. 27-Nov. 12). One of the items will be Mulder's gray t-shirt!
  • New Flash opening coming soon.
  • On Nov. 1 the Fan Forum opens. Since there is already a message board, could this be a chat room? Or a better board?
  • Like we heard before, there will be a conspiracy timeline. What we didn't hear before about this "multimedia tracker" is that it "charts the mytharc through time, theme, character, location and episode. And it looks pretty cool, too."
  • We heard about the CC and RP chats (Nov. 6, Nov. 13). What we didn't hear before is that the CC chat will be broadcast in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
  • A new Web-based role-playing game in which you can "go through training and get assigned to a case as a rookie agent." This is either separate from the new game CC mentioned or this is what he was talking about.
  • A video of the first X-Props contest winner's set visit.
  • Mark Snow (Nov. 3) and Vince Gilligan chats.
  • The Episode Guide Brain, which "will assist you in mapping all 161 shows by character, theme and set location."
  • Online tools to help fans make their own unofficial XF pages, and free Web space (at thexfiles.com?!)! This idea was first proposed by the original thex-files.com webmaster, Reaper. At that time, there was no Fox Internet budget, and he quit out of frustration. He was ahead of his time.
  • Photos, video clips, and teasers from the two premiere episodes.
  • Updated help section on plugins, Flash, etc. This is already up.

The OS people have really outdone themselves this time! Anyway, in an interview, Mitch Pileggi said that he just signed a contract for the next two years--that is, through season 10! He also said that he will be in a limited number of TLG episodes, and that Skinner is in "Patience." Speaking of which, FoxFlash put up 3 promo pictures for that episode. The picture the OS had up for a while with Scully did turn out to be from that episode, then. Those doubting that there will be another XF movie read this quote from CC: "I still think we're going to do a movie, probably two summers from now." Note: This is the last time I will mention it, but just to set things straight, the Roots of Conspiracy game at the season 1 DVD site is the full version, identical to the game on the 7th disc. Finally, more info on Rob Bowman's film Reign of Fire: the script is by Gregg Chabot and Kevin Peterka, Richard Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck will produce along with Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber of Spyglass Entertainment, production starts early next year, and Matthew McConaughey is set to star. BTW I read an interview with RB in the latest Cinefantastique magazine, and it said that he filmed Riptide already during XF season 7. This would conflict with CC saying that he still hasn't finished the script, and I wouldn't take anything that magazine says seriously. ...And the last Dark Angel ep makes it 3 for 3: XF directors have done all the eps so far, the latest by Terrence O'Hara, who happens to start filming 8X09 on Tuesday.

This just in--titles for the premiere episodes! Continuing the trend of one-word titles this season, 8X01 is "Within" and 8X02 is "Without." Apparently the promo tape of 8X01 sent to critics had the title as "Third Party." Probably a good move to change it...I can hear the fans loading their guns already. Anyway, the Vault now has the script for "The Unnatural" for sale together with 3 behind-the-scenes photos. And there's more info on Greg Walker's episode, which is 8X09. I wonder, then, if 8X08 really is a standalone mythology episode or if maybe it will be part 1 of a multi-parter shooting out of order? Terrence O'Hara (The Pretender, Brimstone) will direct 8X09. In addition to what Frank Spotnitz said about the ep in the official mag, we have this (which seems to have nothing to do with it...): "Plot centers around two spooky brothers who run an extermination company." It will start filming Oct. 24. Also TLG info on the "Max Malone-type character": "Stephen Snedden [will] play their good-looking jock pal Jimmy." BTW I really thought I saw another Jimmy, Jimmy the Geek (from "Three of a Kind") in the Fox TLG pilot promo shown at the fall showcase preview. We will see. BTW those who can't watch the streaming video on the OS can download promo #2 here. I'm pretty sure there are 3 in total now not 4.

I haven't seen The Fugitive (another remake?! come on!), but the following XF alums are on staff as producers/writers: Valerie & Vivian Mayhew ("Sanguinarium"), Kim Newton ("Revelations," "Quagmire"), and R.W. Goodwin. This message is from the OS people on the promo pictures: "David Duchovny was not in that particular photo shoot because he was unavailable. He took some photos at a later date, which will be used to promote Mulder's return." Nice. The OS also has more info on other FX theme weeks and a new featured fan page (XF pumpkins!). Also the Ten Thirteen official page is finally up, here. No new info though. Finally, Mike Liedtke of X-Cursions left this message on their new message board: "And, in news that I hope will most people will [sic] consider happy news, I wanted to let everyone know that we were able to iron out the final details on the column's return this week and it all worked out. It looks like X-Cursions will be back for another season. Look for our return in the next couple weeks."

It's a great feeling to type up an update and find out that it wasn't saved. So here goes again. Got my official magazine #15, and there is a bunch of new stuff in it: www.fox-auction.com will have the first-ever official auction of X-Files props etc. starting Oct. 27 for 3 weeks. No info on the site yet, but I do remember talk of an official auction back when the first OS redesign came out during season 7. Now it's finally happening. The cool thing is that part of the proceeds go to The Carter Foundation, which promotes science education. Yes that's Chris Carter. Also coming up is The X-Files eBallot Marathon a.k.a. the 4th annual Thanksgiving marathon on FX. Check out www.fxnetworks.com soon to vote etc...the site for the marathon isn't up yet though. Voting will be from Oct. 29-Nov. 22; also, clues for extra prizes will be shown during the season 7 reruns on FX (Oct. 30-Nov. 22; 3-4 eps won't be shown & will be held over until early 2001 because Fox hasn't rerun them yet). Also the eventual site will supposedly have an "enhanced online experience" and more prizes. The grand prize, as always, is a trip (for 2) to the set. Everyone votes for 3 episodes each; the top 12 will be shown on Thanksgiving from noon to midnight EST/PST. And at midnight, the bonus 13th episode will be aired with the winner's name shown before it, like last year. Anyway issue #16 comes out Dec. 5 and the 2000 yearbook should be out Nov. 28. For those not in the fan club, the official release dates for #15 are Oct. 17 everywhere and Oct. 14 for Barnes & Noble, Borders, and Suncoast Video stores (this is from the OS--speaking of which, it has the regular & Diamond Comics covers up for #15 plus the summary of "Requiem" on the 7X22 page). The Vault also has some new items including a neat cast poster (yes Skinner is on it, no Doggett). Also don't miss the monthly FX mail-in contest at the back of the mag (to win unspecified merchandise). You have to find clues to different season 7 episodes in the artwork for the ep guide. They gave away one of the 11; you have to send in the other 10. So why did I find exactly 11 not including the one they gave away? Other info gleaned from the magazine includes the 4 season 2 episodes that will have cut scenes in the DVD set: "Anasazi," "3," "Sleepless," and "Humbug." The "Requiem" article was neat--12 minutes were cut from the episode! Now I REALLY want to see the full script differences for this one. The article also confirmed that Vince Gilligan is now a full executive producer and that Paul Rabwin is still a producer (I speculated a while back that he is now a supervising producer). Finally, Frank Spotnitz had some quotes as usual. On DD's 11 episodes: "...There's a good chance it'll be less." REMEMBER: This was before the Cinescape article that had the exact breakdown adding up to 11 episodes! He also said that DD & GA are not likely to be able to direct this season. Krycek and Covarrubias won't be seen in the season until after Christmas. :-( About the pregnancy: it won't be addressed in every episode, at least for the first half of the season. FS also gave info on two episodes that we haven't heard about yet. Greg Walker is still on staff, and is writing an episode about "a woman who is saved from a murder and believes she has a guardian angel who's watching over her shoulder protecting her. But she's wrong. It's not what it seems to be at all." Jeffrey Bell is also writing one, about "a man who is seemingly indestructible." Heh, reminiscent of TGV? And that's everything from the magazine.

FoxFlash put out a whole bunch of promo pics for season 8. There are solo shots of Scully and Doggett plus group photos with Skinner. Cinescape Online has them up also. According to FoxFlash, the premiere episodes are still untitled! There is also a season 8 Internet banner floating around somewhere apparently. Anyway...there are screen caps for promo 2 up here, plus there is a third (and very unrevealing) promo out--download here. I'm pretty sure there's a fourth out there with new footage too. OS/new computer game news: "Finally, The X-Files is ushering in its eighth season with a revamped and interactive site (http://www.thexfiles.com). Starting Nov. 1, users will get to preview a new role-playing game in which they can create their identities as FBI agents and begin investigations parallel to the ones on the show [the new game we heard about!]; follow a multimedia timeline of legendary conspiracies dating back to 1946 [the 'Mythology Guide' promised when the first OS redesign came out during season 7?] and participate in live chats with series creator Chris Carter (Nov. 6) and new cast member Robert Patrick (Nov. 13)." ...Off-topic but another X-Files director did yesterday's Dark Angel episode--Michael Katleman ("Shadows"). Two for two.

Alert: the rumor about DD not taking a role offered to him by George Lucas for Star Wars: Episode 3 is false. It came from a French chat with DD in which he said that if asked to play in the movie, he probably would decline because although he is a fan he wouldn't have time. Something was obviously lost in the translation back to English.... Mark Snow news: he did the score for two upcoming episodes of the TNT series Bull. Now GA news thanks to Christopher Wooff: "Could Gillian Anderson be the next U.S. star to make her bid for success on the London stage? In an interview with The Observer this weekend, Anderson revealed that she's currently in talks about doing theatre work in Britain and looks 'certain' to hit the London stage in the near future. What's more, the actress who spent part of her childhood in North London now plans to live part-time in this country." Someone please explain the ramifications of this on TXF??!

In merchandise news, the season 7 episode guide (now untitled) will be out Jan. 2, 2001. It's 288 pages long and written by biographer Marc Shapiro--new guy. Also I learned that about 1,000 movie Thermoses were made, 300 of which have been released--the rest will be sold in the future apparently. There are apparently only 3,000 movie lunchboxes in existence also. Finally (!), the latest McFarlane Toys catalog (with Flukie) also has a deal on the movie action figures. Mulder in Suit, Victim and Stretcher, Scully in Suit, and Alien Pod are available together for $10 in one of two combinations (you can't choose which): Mulder in Suit/Victim and Stretcher plus Scully in Suit/Alien Pod; Scully in Suit/Victim and Stretcher plus Mulder in Suit/Alien Pod. Notice that this is actually just two of the original packages sold together.

Lots of news today. First a tiny warning: MULDER WILL NOT BE KILLED OFF BY A BRAIN TUMOR AT THE END OF THIS SEASON! Thank you. Anyone who believes this fabricated crap as the real deal obviously forgets that there is a movie series to preserve. And anyone who thinks 1013 would "ask around" to see if that ending would appeal to fans (as the rumor says) doesn't know how 1013 works. And finally, anyone who is sending letters of protest to 1013 about these false rumors is making himself look ridiculous and will also make legitimate letter-writing campaigns going on right now look stupid as well.

Back to the news. This just in--news on 8X08 already: "Just found out that ep 8 is written by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz. Kim Manners is directing. Shooting begins October 12. Story centers around Duffy Haskell, an ex-military man who goes to Scully & Doggett to investigate his wife's death during childbirth. They discover he is the president of the Ohio Mutual UFO Network and that he wrote threatening letters to Mulder. This man believes that his wife was impregnated by aliens--she was a multiple abductee. Also, Scully finds out that her trusted obstetrician is in on a conspiracy. The casting breakdown states--NOT MY WORDS!--that Scully has been consulting him for the past year and that he was helping her to conceive--that's what the breakdown says." WOW. Can this really be true? Or a planted rumor? The Haven is usually very reliable. Time will tell. The Fox Fall Preview aired in some places already in other news. The XF montage can be downloaded right here. A transcript is here. Speaking of which, a second promo trailer is out, and it aired during that Fox bachelor special and the Dark Angel pilot yesterday. The OS has it online already. Speaking of DA, at least 3 actors from TXF were in it, Stephen Mark edited it (he did the XF movie and some episodes), and David Nutter was the director. Why didn't we find this out earlier? Maybe because Fox was screaming James Cameron's name at us so much! (I will say that it was a very entertaining two hours, but I lost count of how many shows/films it copied off of, including TXF. And the teen stuff was incredibly unnecessary.) Anyway. Another thing the OS recently posted was info on two FX themed XF marathons--see the site for more info.

More season 8 info...in the form of Frank Spotnitz quotes. Here we go: "You'll get more information [on the pregnancy] early in the new year, probably some time after Christmas. Since Mulder is missing, I think it would be difficult for Scully to get real hard answers." This must be 8X08. FS also hinted at the possibility of the answer to when colonization is coming being revealed in the next movie if one is made. DD did a chat recently and some quotes came out of that too. On more XF movies: "I think sometimes you have to leave a character and move on; X-Files is stuck to my skin, and I think if I return for another movie, I'll definitely be classified as not able to portray another character while I believe I am well able to do many other roles in other films.... ;-)" ...Nooooooo.... Also apparently he said that his participation in a season 9 depends on negotiations...again changing his mind so it's not ruled out. Jeez. Now courtesy of Dennis Sung, I have some details on the production of TLG. John P. Kousakis is co-executive producer, Kathy Gilroy-Sereda is a producer, and Barry Donlevy is the director of photography. Where are the XF alums? Here's the best tidbit: Shooting starts October 23 and will go on until March 21, 2001 for season 1.

Great merchandise news! The Flukeman figure from McFarlane Toys is finally out (available only to members of the FREE McFarlane Toys Collector's Club). See a picture here of the page from the latest McFarlane catalog sent out to members that includes a pic of the figure and ordering info. Also David Yeldon sent me a clarification on something I posted about TGV possibly being released on video in the U.K.: "7X02 was on the [British Board of Film Classification] database (as are all other season 7 eps) because they have all been classified over the last few weeks for release in the VHS season 7 collector's box. It is likely to be a '15' certificate overall (only 7X04 & 7X11 haven't been done yet)." He also said this: "Also more info on the U.K. season 1 DVD set: all extra/DVD-ROM features are the same as in the U.S. version, so it's a good bet they're identical. The box will be in the same style as the U.S. version (fold-out cardboard). This is confirmed as classified '15' (same as VHS was)." He also sent me a bigger picture of the season 7 box set (here). Finally for today: "Jet Li has signed up to take on the lead role in James Wong and Glen Morgan's The One project [previously set to star The Rock]. Wong and Morgan wrote the script for the film, which Wong will also direct for Revolution Studios. Morgan will produce the film with Steve Chasman and Charles Newirth."

Not too much going on. First off I want to give a shout-out to the awesome official site. I e-mailed them about my XF address not working, and I received not one but two friendly responses that led me to getting my address working (others having problems, click here, do what it says, and see if it works afterward). Also they informed me that the links were fixed in the rerun schedule (as I described last update and they must have read here). On the topic of the OS, click here to see its listing of international release dates for the season 1 DVD box set. Also at that link is a cool blurb on U.K. vanity license plates--they are now available starting with the letter "X." Even though this is coincidental, it's neat of them to post that and it is a cool way to get people to promote the show. I will end this update with a little merchandise news. First, the rerelease of FTF on DVD seems to have been bumped back to January 2001. And expect season 3 on DVD sometime in the first quarter of next year. Finally (thanks Christopher Wooff!): "While I was researching some Media Studies work on censorship on the British Board of Film Classification I found that 'The Goldberg Variation' had been classified a 12 certificate in the last few days--could this mean it will be released soon?" Sounds like it.

Well as everyone probably knows the 8X07 rumor was wrong (apologies), but the OS has the right info. It's called "Via Negativa" (more than one word!) and written by Frank Spotnitz (alone!). Tony Wharmby will direct it--he's done JAG and Providence episodes among many other things. The title means "By Way of Negation" literally. From the OS: "The Latin phrase refers to the darkest path taken en route to enlightenment. Skinner, Kersh and the Lone Gunmen all appear in the episode." Speaking of the OS, behind-the-scenes premiere pictures were put up, as well as a new Nick Lea video and an X2 schedule. The schedule does link to some episodes wrong--for example, "The Sixth Extinction" links to "Hungry" in the episode guide because the latter was the first filmed and the former was the first aired of the season. Also about 8X07: "Has to do with a cult called the Ibogan Temple Cult that believe that the path of darkness leads to a higher plane of being. The FBI has this cult under surveillance." More details on the ep:

"The presence of Kersh and Skinner is explained by the fact that two victims of the MOTW who appear in the teaser are FBI agents who were already on the case. The big brass tends to sit up and take notice when their own are killed. I saw absolutely nothing that would indicate a mytharc-type story. I'm curious about where the Lone Gunmen figure in; I suspect it has more to do with the Scully end of the story than Doggett's investigation of the X-file. The scenes with Scully do seem to be regarding her pregnancy--I think that it's why she can't investigate. I'm sorry--I know that sounds cryptic, but I don't have enough information about the exact nature of Scully's scenes to be more clear. I just wouldn't necessarily rule out the possibility that we'll learn more about her pregnancy in this ep. In one scene, Skinner and Doggett seem to be covering for Scully where Kersh is concerned. Doggett just doesn't know why, and he's not happy about that, since he thinks Scully is probably the agent with the most insight and experience to solve the case. Skinner won't tell him what's up with Scully, though. But toward the end, Doggett gets a clue. And that's really all I can say about it. I'm sorry."

Lance Henriksen recently said this: "I would love to play Frank Black again. Chris Carter wants to do a movie. We'd be able to show and say things that we couldn't on the series." Nothing really new...but maybe this is more than just an idea? Also no new info in Dean Haglund's latest update to his site (Buzz section), but check it out anyway for a spinoff refresher. What is new info is that the spinoff starts shooting in October--not too far away!

There's another new address for the Fox X-Files store (not the Vault). Check out www.cmgstore.com/whnjsp/fox/xfiles/homeframe.jsp for cool merchandise--neat new items include a mousepad with a built-in calculator and an "X" CD holder! Anyway this may be a disappointment: the season 2 DVD set has been delayed another two weeks to Nov. 28. But it promises to be even better than the season 1 set--more details than the ones I previously posted are that it will include "interviews with creator Chris Carter in which he talks about twelve episodes from season two: 'Little Green Men,' 'The Host,' 'Sleepless,' 'Duane Barry,' 'Ascension,' 'One Breath,' 'Irresistible,' 'Die Hand Die Verletzt,' 'Colony,' 'End Game,' 'Humbug' and 'Anasazi,' plus behind-the-scenes clips, nine Behind the Truth spots from FX, and 49 promotional television spots." Finally:

"The truth is still out there: stations in 135 markets have wrapped deals to air reruns of The X-Files under a two-year pact running through 2002-03. Fox-owned WNYW in Gotham, KTTV in Los Angeles and WFLD in Chicago are among the stations on board for new deals; stations in key markets such as Pittsburgh, Portland, Minneapolis and Orlando have also signed on. The 135 markets represent 80% of the country. The Chris Carter-created thriller has been the top-rated weekly hour in syndication since its off-network bow in 1997. 'This solidifies The X-Files as one of the true winners in syndication,' said Paul Franklin, executive vice president and general sales manager at Fox sister company Twentieth Television."

Here's a tidbit on "Roadrunners" without spoiling too much: "It's kind of a cross between 'Ice' and 'Our Town.' 'Our Town' because everyone in the town is creepy and united in some sick theory. 'Ice' because they're in a secluded place with a limited amount of people and because they also put worm-type creatures into people's bodies." Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan anyone? BTW did anyone catch the scenes from the premiere (taken from the promo) shown at 9 last Sunday to alert viewers that they weren't showing XF? In U.K. news, David Yeldon sent me a picture of the season 7 video box set, here. Finally, Ira sent me info on the X-Files movie Video CD released in Indonesia on August 20. It is made by Musica VideoVan and subtitled in Indonesian. The words "Persekongkolan Rahasia" at the bottom of the front cover mean "Secret Conspiracy." Here are the front and back cover pictures. Until next update....

I have this scoop from CSM Consortium. Apparently this is from an E! interview with William B. Davis, so definitely take this with a grain of salt (although he said CC told him this in a meeting). WBD said that he and DD would be in episode 7 (8X07). He said that CSM would appear in the episode either alive or dead, no dreams or flashbacks. Meaning that if CSM is dead, we'd see his body, and otherwise he's still alive. What he said is that Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz, and David Duchovny are writing the episode. Also this can't be part 1 of 2 because according to the OS, "Redrum" airs the week after 8X07. Let's wait and see if this turns out to be true. Also the 1013 staff got more promotions this year. It is certain that Kim Manners and John Shiban are now co-executive producers, and that David Amann is a producer. I'm not sure, but possibly Vince Gilligan is a full executive producer now and Paul Rabwin a supervising producer. From the OS: "Hosted by Christopher Titus, the network special Fox Fall Preview gives viewers the first look at the Fox primetime fall schedule. Clips from new and returning shows (including The X-Files) will be shown. Check your local listings, because dates and times vary from city to city." Also the OS has a picture of the latest Entertainment Weekly cover (with GA and RP) up. The new info from the article is here:

  • DD's 11 episodes: the first two, the last six, and three somewhere in between. Not all of these will be leading roles (we heard previously six of them will).
  • CC wrote or rewrote 5 of the first 7 episodes. We know of three, so what are the other two? 8X07 must obviously be one of them, and this may fit in with the info above on who may have written the ep. Certainly "Roadrunners" by Vince didn't have to be rewritten--so was it "Redrum" or "Invocation"?
  • Gary Cole and D.B. Sweeney (from Harsh Realm) were also considered for the role of Doggett. Robert Patrick was considered for HR last year.
  • As suspected, GA's signing for season 9 was a trade-off for a pay hike--200-300 grand an episode.
  • GA: "I have confidence, and possibly inner knowledge, that the fans will get to see how Scully got pregnant...before Christmas."
  • CC on what questions are left: "What the aliens are up to, what their ultimate purpose is, when they're coming, and what they're doing now that the conspiracy has broken down. What are their alliances? Is there any involvement with them by humans? Also, what is this other race of aliens [i.e., the renegades with the sewn-up eyes and mouths] up to, and what is their connection with the grays [the dominant alien faction]?"
  • FS on Samantha: "I don't think as long as Mulder is in the series that you can be truly done with her." CC: "I think it's been pretty much resolved."
  • CC on Krycek and Marita: "They're free agents now, and they're not necessarily best friends. [But] I think, depending upon what happens with Cigarette-Smoking Man, they will become, in a way, the prime movers in the--maybe--reestablishment of a conspiracy." FS: They promise to be a lot more exciting than the Syndicate. "It's a sexier dynamic because these are young, attractive, vital, dangerous people. We expect to use that to the hilt."
  • CC: "We'll find [Gibson] in a very unlikely place, but a place that ultimately makes sense. We're going to explore him and how he came to be."
  • CC on the colonization: "Well, you're envisioning Independence Day; I'm envisioning something different...." Which is? "I think you'll have to wait...until season 16."
  • 8X01 takes place 1 day after "Requiem." In the premiere, Doggett comes face-to-face with Mulder. RP: "I do run into Mulder, and it's a confrontation. I have a gun, and I basically tell him I'm going to shoot unless he does what I say. He does--and then he does something un-fucking-believable."

That's all for now.
