The Boston Story

Lori's Part:

Michaela shot a wicked look of disapproval Annette's way before locking eyes with her husband.

Her glare did not wave as Sully's eyes broke from her to his hands. Swiftly, he moved his hands from Annette's and got up, once again looking at his wife. Michaela turned and bolted from the room hoping to find some assurance before dealing with this situation.

Had she interpreted the whole scenario accurately? As she retreated from the dining hall and through the atrium towards the staircase, there was a knock on the door. Frustrated at the poor timing, she answered the door herself forgetting for the moment that she paid people to answer the door.

She opened the door to hear a slightly older woman say,

"Good Morning Ma'am, Avon calling"

At that precise moment, Sully appeared at her side, "we need to talk."

Michaela nodded and turned to the woman standing in her door,

"now isn't the best time, perhaps you have a catalogue?"

The woman replied, "No, but what a great idea, good day Ma'am."

Michaela closed the door and faced her husband. "Sully, what exactly did I witness? Please tell me that she was only serving you coffee!"

Disappointed by her lack of trust, Sully cupped her shoulders in his hands and looked her in the eye,

"of course she was only serving me coffee!! The truth is, I have been spending a lot of time with the staff Dr. Mike, they are the only ones that I can talk to."

Michaela felt like Sully was not giving an honest attempt at making the arrangements in Boston work. It was unfair to bring him to Boston but it was also unfair of him to make her feel guilty about it.

"I know that this is very difficult for you, but you must realize that it won't be forever

Sully looked at his wife feeling that he didn't know her at that moment.

"Do you really know how difficult this is for me?"

With a hurt expression on his face, he turned and walked away.

Outside he stormed, until he came to the stables were he was met by the driver.

"Which wagon will you be needing this morning sir?"

Aggravated, Sully walked passed him, "No wagon, just a horse."

The hired hand swiftly passed him hoping to reach the animal before Sully so that he could prepare him for the outing. Sully grabbed the man by the arm as he was lifting a saddle off the shelf.

"No wagon, no saddle, no nothing. I will get myself the horse."

Sully opened the gate and led a beautiful Quarterhorse out of the stable.

Jumping on bareback, Sully faced the animal towards the road.

"But Sir, would the use of a saddle not suit you more comfortably?"

Just then, Michaela came out the door and called to her husband.

"Where are you going?"

Sully told her that he needed to get out of the city for awhile.

"I won't be long, just needin' to find a little peace amongst all the craziness."

Michaela nodded trying to be understanding. She then sadly turned and approached the house unsure of how to deal with her husband's unhappiness.

In another window, Annette stood looking out at Sully... smiling at the scene she had just witnessed and wondering how she could find Sully, wherever he was going.

Julie's Part:

Michaela closed the doors behind her. She stood in silence, leaning against the mahogany doors, when the tears began to flow.

She was then startled when Harrison, the butler, entered the atrium.

Michaela quickly wiped away her tears, while trying to compose herself. Knowing it wasn't proper to show such emotion in front of the staff.

"Is everything all right madam?" Harrison sensing something was wrong.

"Everything is fine, Harrison." "Tell Fiona, I won't be eating breakfast this morning." "I'm a bit tired and I'm going up stairs to rest."

"As you wish, madam." With that , Harrison left heading towards the kitchen.

Michaela knowing that she was now alone, then bolted up the stairs, heading towards her and Sully's bedroom; their sanctuary.

After what seemed to be hours of riding, Sully decided to stop, to allow the horse to rest.

He wasn't so sure where he was but he seemed a million miles away from Boston. As he walked along the river bank he pondered the events that took place earlier that morning. He asked himself.

"Why can't Michaela understand what I'm goin through?" "How could she think that I would look at another woman?"

Frustrated and tired, Sully walked over to a near by oak tree; where he collapsed.

Sully, down on his knees, began to call out to the Spirits for guidance.

"Tell me what to do", he shouted. With that, tears began to flow.

Michaela jolted up from the bed, when she heard a knock on the door.

"Sully", she said to herself.

She stood up from the bed and smoothed out the wrinkles from her dress. Just then the door opened. A small figure appeared from behind the closed door.

"Hi mama. Wat you doin?"

Michaela smiled enthusiastically so Katie wouldn't see her disappointment.

"Hello sweetheart. Come here and give your mama a hug."

Katie ran to Michaela and gave her a big hug. She then turned and faced her mother. She then asked.

"Where is Papa?"

Vicki's Part:

Before she had a chance to answer, Michaela was interrupted by another knock. It was the butler.

"Excuse me, ma'am. Doctor and, er...Doctor Cook are here to see you."

Harrison remembered the last time he addressed Michaela's daughter and son-in-law as "Doctor and Mrs.", and the good-natured dressing down he took for neglecting to use Colleen's hard won title.

Even at her tender age, Katie was becoming quite outspoken.

At any rate, Harrison chose to take no chances in young Miss Sully's presence. "Shall I tell them you'll be coming down?"

"Yes, of course!" Michaela cried, "I'll be down in just a moment! And would you please tell Fiona there will be two more for breakfast?"

"Certainly, Madam." the butler replied, and went back to the kitchen.

Soon, Michaela, Katie, Colleen and Andrew were sitting at the table, enjoying a sumptuous breakfast and each others' company.

Although she was still upset about Sully, Michaela was happy for the distraction, especially for Katie's sake.

Michaela hoped Sully would return before she'd have to explain anything to the little girl.

"So what brings you here so soon?" Michaela asked.

"Surely the two of you must be very busy, what with the move back to Colorado Springs."

It had long been a dream of Colleen and Andrew to start their own practice back home...as partners. Colleen had gotten her medical degree, had gone to England to work with no less than the Queen's royal physicians, and had returned to the states to begin her career.

Now the Cooks could think about settling down to the life they had hoped for. Michaela was so proud of her daughter. She wondered how she could have doubted Colleen and Andrew's devotion for each other...their marriage had come through the trials of Colleen's medical education stronger than it had been when it started...

Andrew looked at Colleen, who returned the look.

"Well, Michaela," Andrew began.

"That's what we came here to discuss with you." Colleen added, "Ma, you know that Andrew and I will always consider Colorado Springs our home."

Andrew continued, "And eventually, we would still like to begin our practice there..."

"But, Ma," Colleen said softly,

"Without you and Pa, it just wouldn't seem right...I've already missed enough of Katie's childhood. Andrew and I have decided that as long as you are here in Boston, that's exactly where we want to be...even if we never go back to Colorado Springs!"

Michaela was taken aback. Although she was delighted to hear that Colleen and Andrew would be staying close, she couldn't help feeling guilty again

. "Colleen...Andrew..." Michaela breathed.

"Are you sure this is what you want? I'd like nothing more than to have you stay in Boston...but..."

"We have plenty of time to begin our medical partnership, Michaela. I've already been offered a position at Boston General..." Andrew reassured,

"But as far as we're concerned, our home is where our family is...and speaking of family..."

Andrew smiled at his beautiful wife, who, as Michaela was beginning to notice, was positively glowing. Colleen smiled and blushed with pride.

"I was hoping Pa would be here too, but I suppose he won't mind you telling him the good news!" she began.

"I would love to hear some good news today!" Michaela said, ruefully, reminded again that Sully was not there.

Andrew and Colleen looked at each other, grins widening, till the happiness exploded in unison,

"We're going to have a baby!"

"A...a baby?!" Michaela cried. "Yes, Ma! Isn't it wonderful!"

"She's nearly three months along already!" Andrew grinned.

"I was waiting for the right time to tell you, Ma, but Andrew said we'd better tell you before my belly did!" Colleen and Andrew laughed heartily. Indeed, Colleen's belly was beginning to round out ever so slightly.

"Katie, darling! Your Ma is going to be..."

Katie thought for a moment..."A Gran'ma!"

"Oh...if only Sully were here! Colleen, Andrew, would you do me a favor and watch Katie for me? I'd ask Brian, but he's not home right now."

Michaela looked pleadingly at her daughter and son-in-law.

"Of course, Ma." Colleen answered, perplexed.

"We'll take good care of her, Michaela. Perhaps we'll take her shopping for a new dress. Colleen's been wanting to do that for quite some time!"

"Thank you so much. Katie, Mama will be back soon, be good for Colleen and Andrew."

"Are you going to bring Poppy home?" Katie asked, going back to her "baby" name for her father.

"Yes, that's what I'm going to do, I won't be long!" Michaela left, determined to find her husband.
