So Many Memories
Part 1
Michaela Quinn sat quietly at her
desk reading through
her latest copies of Advanced Medical Journals.
Usually she was quite
overjoyed to see what findings other doctors
throughout the country and
the world, for that matter, had to share.
Practising
medicine was what she
wanted to do and the rewards were far greater in
places where there were no
'fancy' hospitals and where people truly relied on
their 'town doctor'
for almost everything. She was needed here in spite
of the fact that her
first encounter with these people was, to say the
least, hostile.
Closing her book now, she sat alone staring around
the empty clinic. 'So
many memories', she thought to herself. so many people
had come and gone in
her life. Some had died because of the lack of proper
conditions and
medical supplies. Others, there was no way to save
them and yet maybe some
day, man would find cures. She only hoped she would
live long enough to see
that day. The day when she could save everyone, not
only from disease but
from hate and injustice. Sully had once said to her
that she couldn't
help everyone, nor could she change those who didn't
accept change. She had
replied 'I don't believe that', and had proven not
only to him but to
herself that some change was good.
As she
looked around her clinic,'Imagine what my Father would
be saying if he
could see me now?', she thought. and a tear escaped
from her eye.
"Michaela?", a soft voice filtered in through the
locked door. "Michaela.
Are you in there? It's me, Dorothy."
Shaken back to
reality, she answered
"Yes, Dorothy. I'll be there in a moment."
Dorothy had come to see why the doctor, her good
friend had kept herself
locked up for the last few days. People were beginning
to wonder what was
going on at the clinic. The doctor was not herself
lately and as most
people in small towns do, they had their own gossip
trail going.
"I was just finishing up the last of my new medical
reports. Sorry, were
you waiting long Dorothy?"
"No, I only just got
here. Michaela, folks
have been wonderin - is there something wrong? I mean,
are you all right?"
"Yes, of course
Dorothy, I'm fine. I've just been so intent on getting
all my reading done
that I haven't had much time for 'chat'." Michaela
answered, hoping this
would satisfy Dorothy's curiosity and that of everyone
else.
"I see.", but Dorothy was not
satisfied, of course. She
had gotten to know Michaela quite well and could tell
better than anyone,
except for Sully, that something was different about
her friend these days.
"Would you like to have some coffee with me? I've
just finished today's
paper and I know I need a break. How about you?"
Knowing Dorothy's
persistence, Michaela agreed to
join her and the two women walked in silence across to
the Cafe where Grace
was waiting to greet them.
"Well, Hello Dr. Mike! I haven't seen much of you
these days.
Everything all right?" Grace inquired.
"Yes
Grace, everything's fine.
Why are you all so curious as to my 'state of mind'
these days?" asked
Michaela.
"No reason," Grace said."We all just care about
you. When we're sick you
look after us and sometimes there's no one left to look
after you."
"I don't need 'looking after' Grace and Dorothy! I
am doing just fine."
The tone of Michaela's voice had changed. She seemed
agitated now and could
stand no more questions. With that, she placed her
hands over her eyes and
began to sob. Not wanting to feel embarrassed or show
weakness, she turned
sharply and ran back to the safe haven of her clinic,
locking the door
behind her.
Grace and Dorothy stared at each other
in wonder. What had
happened to that strong willed woman they so admired?
The one who stood off
the army and fought for the rights of everyone needing
help. The woman who
faced epidemics, fearless but cautious. The woman who
attempted things,
that at one time, meant only for men. Where had her
spirit gone? What had
happened to make her so vulnerable? They had no
answers but did know that
one thing for sure, that if something or someone didn't
help Dr. Mike, they
would lose their mentor, perhaps forever.
"Maybe I'd better find
Sully", Dorothy asked Grace, not knowing what else to
do.
"I think he's away in Washington Dorothy.
He's been spending so
much time there these days. Maybe that's what's
botherin' her? She's missing
him!"
"You could be right Grace but I have to find out
and Sully knows her
better than anyone. I'll get Horace to wire him in
Washington and maybe he
could surprise her with a little visit home."
Both women agreed.
Michaela was
sitting back down in her chair at the clinic, her head
resting on the desk.
she didn't know how long she had been asleep but that
it was starting to
get dark outside and the shadows were all around her
in the empty clinic.
Shadows of things of the past. She almost laughed
aloud,'Scrooge, by
Charles Dickens! I guess I'll be visited by my ghosts
of the past tonight!'
Shaking her head she got up from the chair and
decided it was time
to head for home. Whatever the problem, it would have
to keep until
tomorrow as sleep was all that her mind could think of
right now.
"Ma"! Brian seemed surprised."You're home! Where have
you been?"
"At the clinic of
course Brian, why?"
Michaela answered.
"Katie wanted to say good night to you
but she finally fell
asleep so I put her to bed."
"Katie!", Michaela
gasped. Oh my gosh I almost forgot my own darling
daughter and Brian. Oh how
she relied on him these days. Poor boy was more of a
mother to Katie than
she was. What must he think of his 'Ma' now?
"Brian, I am so sorry. I was so caught up
in my work....Oh
Brian can you ever forgive me?" She once again broke
into streams of
tears."I don't know what's wrong with me. I can't seem
to keep my mind in
order." Michaela sighed.
Brian gently put
both arms around his ma. He loved her so much and knew
all too well the
'gossip' that was spreading around town.
"It's okay
Ma. Katie's fine and I'm fine. I like lookin' after
her. I love her."
Michaela's face
lit up. He was so
precious. Brian had grown to be such a responsible
young man. She found it
hard to think of him as a man-that little boy who's
first words to her were
'You're dress sure is dirty!"
But Brian was letting her off too easy. she had
responsibilities not
only to her patients but more important ones to her
family. It was as if
time had passed and she had no idea where it had gone.
What was she doing
to her family? How could she have abandoned them? Why
had she forgotten to
be home in time to kiss her baby girl goodnight? She
was a doctor and a
good one. She had enough confidence left in herself to
know that but, when
it came to the rest of her life, well it was now being
poorly managed and
'that' bothered her more than losing any patient.
"Ma, Ma!",
Brian was gently tugging at her arm as she stared into
the fire.
Michaela seemed to leap
back into reality once
more and gave Brian a smile. "I'm sorry Brian. I l
know it's been rough on
you these last few days. You'll never know how much I
rely on you. Maybe a
little too much!"
"It's okay Ma. Like I told you, I like lookin' after
Katie. I think you've
just been workin' too hard that's all. Maybe you need
to get away?" Brian
had seemed to hit a nerve.
"Get
away? But how can I, I mean I have patients who need
me and you and Katie.
Who would make sure you were all right? No Brian I
couldn't...."
"Ma
something's botherin' you and I just think you need some
time away from the
clinic."
Michaela was listening to his
every word now. She
did feel drained and maybe a few days away would be a
good idea, but only
if Brian and Katie could be with her.
"Brian you are wise beyond your years.
How would you like
some ice cream?" she grinned.
"Ice cream?"
"That's right. I think
it's about time we took Katie for her first train
ride. How would you like
to go back to Boston?" She didn't have to wait long
for his response.
"Boston! When can we
go?" Brian was excited.
"Well, I'll have
to get someone to look
after the clinic and the homestead. With Matthew at Law
School and Andrew and
Colleen so far away, I guess I could ask Robert E. to
look after things
around here and I'll see about one of the doctors from
a neighboring town
to check on my patients. But I think it can be done,
and the sooner the
better! Good idea Brian! Very good idea!"
End of Part 1
Part 2
With the plans all set and their
bags all packed,
Michaela, Brian and Katie boarded the train in
Colorado Springs, headed for
Boston. Michaela had sent a wire to her mother and the
news of the family's
visit was received in Boston with great anticipation.
Dorothy and Grace,
being so overwhelmed
with the change in their friend had forgotten to
mention to her that they
had wired Sully. His trip back home was supposed to be
a surprise to
Michaela and now she wouldn't even be there to greet
him.
"Do you think she
wired Sully about her visit to Boston?" Dorothy asked
Grace as they walked
away from the depot.
"Oh I'm sure she would."
Grace answered. "They have always had a such a good
relationship and it
isn't every day you take a trip like this. I'm sure
Sully knows"
"I guess
you're right," Dorothy
answered. "Anyhow, they've gone now. Maybe he'll be
joining them in Boston?"
Grace
nodded, "I'm sure you're right. Now let's get back to
the Cafe. I got
somthin' I want to talk to you about."
Dorothy could
hardly wait. Grace had
been hinting all week about some kind of surprise she
was working on and
now she was about to find out!
Feeling a little
uncomfortable in his
suit, Sully removed the jacket and sat back down in
his seat. He was really
trying hard to get used to all the changes in his
life. Who could have
imagined Sully in suits every day, his hair a little
shorter and meeting in
fancy hotels with senators and congressmen. He was
starting, he had to
admit, to enjoy his newfound ability. He never knew
the satisfaction of
being able to do some good. Of being able to show them
in Washington just
how it was out West. But his concern now shifted to
the telegram he had
received from Miss Dorothy. He wasn't at all sure what
he was going to find
when he got back home, but it had been several
weeks-long enough away from
Michaela and the kids. He now knew what her life at
the clinic was like.
How easy it was to get so caught up in your work that
you lose all track
of time. He used to hate Michaela's job but at the
same time he was envious
of her having something to do that she loved. He could
identify with her
dedication and perseverance to her work. But why had
Dorothy sent this
telegram? Why not his wife? He was sure that if there
was a serious
problem, she would have contacted him herself. Unless
Michaela was unable
to send him word and Dorothy wasn't telling all.
But he couldn't think about that
now. All he could do was
hope and pray all was well and that the train ride
would soon be over and
he would be home, once again. Home, that sounded real
good to him. He could
shed the costume he wore to impress those who needed
to hear his plea. He
could put on his own clothes and ride out to where the
land was still open
and endless. The very land he fought so hard to keep
free. Home, where
Brian and his little Katie awaited him and where his
beautiful and
courageous wife was.
'Michaela'. He longed to put his
arms around her. He
needed to feel the comfort and strength she put back
into his soul. She
truly was a remarkable woman and he blessed the day
they found each other.
If he closed his eyes he could almost picture her
standing on the porch of
their homestead he had built for her and the kids. He
could see her long,
beautiful brown hair - the one thing that had never
changed. He had adored
that hair ever since he first set eyes on her. With
the thought of his wife
safely embedded in his mind, he fell peacefully asleep,
not to wake again
till the train came to a complete stop in Colorado
Springs.
Boston was bustling with
busy shoppers. Katie's eyes grew wide as she took in
as much as one little
girl could. Never before had Michaela seen her so
excited. It was like
nothing she had witnessed before. Brian's first
thought was the Ice Cream
Parlour and Michaela granted his wish to stop there
before heading to her
mother's home.
"I'll have one scoop of each flavor,
please," Brian anxiously
announced.
"Are you sure you
can eat all of that?" Michaela asked, knowing full
well that he could and
would.
"Sure Ma. I've waited a long time
for this!"
"I know you have and you deserve it. shall we
see what Katie
thinks of ice cream?" She pointed to the Strawberry
and asked the clerk for
just a small bowl. Katie's eyes widened again as the
dish was set down in
front of her.
"Now Katie, this will be cold," Michaela
said. "So just a
little at a time."
But the little girl's
curiosity of this new
food got the better of her and she dove in face first!
Michaela and Brian
howled with laughter as Katie lifted her ice cream
covered face and
squealed! "Yummy!"
Michaela was delighted she had brought her family
here. It was what she
needed, to get back to being a mother. To have some
fun and share new
things with her family. She only wished that Sully
had been there to see
his little girl's face, covered in pink ice cream. She
smiled. Sully would
have enjoyed this scene as well and they could have
shared a very special
moment, together. But he wasn't there and suddenly
Michaela was sad again.
Why was her family scattered? It was so nice when they
were all at home
having dinner or sharing some great adventure together.
She missed Colleen
and Matthew very much. The good times and the bad, all
combined to make her
memories of home swell up inside her. She needed to
see them. She also
needed to feel the warmth of her husband's arms around
her. She needed to
feel the security and love when she awoke in the
morning and watched him
sleeping silently beside her. She was once again sad.
Memories, so many
memories......"Ma," Brian's loud
voice shook her back to the present." Ma, Katie's
covered in ice cream.
What will Grandma think?"
"Well Brian, Grandma will think
that Katie has just
enjoyed her first bowl of ice cream!" they laughed
together and the memory
of that sight-her daughter-would last forever. It would
be stored away along
side all the other wonderful memories she held on to
so tightly.
"Oh, Katie, you're growing
so fast my sweet
darling granddaughter," Elizabeth Quinn boasted. "And
you are so very
pretty too!" Katie was smothered with hugs and kisses
and didn't seem to
mind it one bit. Michaela was so relieved to see her
daughter enjoying all
the attention she had been lacking from her own
mother.
"Where's Sully?" asked Rebecca.
"He's
still in Washington on business. I sent him a wire
the day we left,"
Michaela sighed. "I do miss him so much but he is
finally making some
progress with the' higher-ups' there. This has been
important to him. But
it does keep him away from home longer." Regretting
her last statement,
knowing it added fuel to her mother's already tainted
opinion of Sully,
Michaela added, "But I am so busy too that we have
found a very good balance
in our lives. Sully and I couldn't be happier!" A lie
she hoped would
satisfy her mother.
"Oh really Michaela? That's great!," answered
Rebecca. She was very
genuine and was probably the only one left in the
Quinn family to support
her. "Maybe Sully will join us here," she added.
"That would be
nice, especially for Katie. I think this little girl
needs both her parents
but who am I to step in?' Mrs. Quinn's remarks always
cut sharp but
Michaela was used to them and smiled once more when
Katie planted a big
mushy kiss on her Grandmother's cheek. They all
laughed and conversation
about the absence of Sully, ceased.

Part 2
Part 3
Horace could hear the whistle of
the train off in the
distance. As he checked his pocket watch he uttered,
"Right on time, as
usual."
Horace was very serious about his duties and
carried them out with
such precision. He made sure Myra and Samantha were
well taken care of and
that Myra had been seeing another man. Deep down it
bothered him but all he
ever wanted, and he could finally see that now, was
for her to be free of
the Saloon and happy.
But her face often filled his
dreams and he couldn't
help but remember the many 'spats' he had with Hank
over her so-called
'contract'. Horace always believed that Myra meant
more to Hank than he
ever let on but Hank was too proud to show any signs
of weakness for
anyone, especially a woman.. and since Myra had left,
he and Hank had
developed a new bond. A shared sadness of her absence.
"Sully!" Horace
cried "You're back! Good to have you home Sully!"
"Hello Horace, it's good to
be 'Home'," Sully
honestly remarked.
"How are things in Washington? We don't get much news
from there but we all
know you're doin' a good job!"
"Thanks Horace." a very weary
Sully replied as he
snatched up his bag. "Everything's comin' along real
good. But I don't have
much time to send all the news back home. Too many
meetin's. Too many people
to meet with. I barely find time to eat and sleep let
alone write home!"
Sully remarked.
"Well you can tell us all about it
now you're here!"
Horace seemed excited.
"Maybe later
Horace. I really just wanna get home now, to my
family."
"Oh sure Sully, I
understand. Well it sure is
good to have you back." Horace felt sorry for Sully as
he watched him head
away from the depot. He seemed so lost in his thoughts
that he almost
forgot..."But Sully," he called. "Michaela and the
kids, well they've gone
to Boston, for a visit. Left two days ago they did."
"Boston?" Sully stopped. "Why
didn't Michaela tell
me she was takin' the kids to Boston?" Sully wondered.
"Don't know Sully,
but I saw them off myself. Maybe you want to send a
wire to them. I know
they all miss you!" Horace could see the
disappointment in Sully's tired
face as he dragged his luggage back to the telegraph
office.
"It seems like the only thing to do
right now. I was
really hopin' to have a few days alone with my family.
I don't want to get
back on that train right now, but I really need to see
them." Sully sighed.
"Horace?" he asked, "Is everything all right?-I mean,
how did Dr. Mike seem
to you?" Sully was hoping to get some of his anxiety
about Dorothy's
telegram relieved.
"She seemed fine to me.
Why you askin'?" Horace curiously answered.
"Ah, nothin' Horace. I guess Dorothy was just
playin'cupid'
again. Her and Dr. Mike talk about 'things', maybe it
was just a gentle
reminder to me that I needed a break. I needed some
time at home. Better
get that wire off to Boston and book me on the next
train out."
"Sure thing Sully. Right
away!" Horace replied
as he leapt into action.
The moment Dorothy had waited for had finally come.
Her and Grace had put
their heads together and Grace's plan was for a big
'Colorado Springs'
reunion. Dorothy was overwhelmed by the prospect of
contacting people from
all over the country that had ever been in or had
something to do with the
town. It would be the biggest celebration this town
had ever seen. They
would see to that!
"Yes, of course Grace. That sounds like a
wonderful idea. I have
so many things spinnin' around in my head right
now..............!"
With their heads
together they hadn't
noticed Sully's approach. "Mornin' Ladies," Sully
smiled.
"Sully!, Oh
how wonderful to see you. When did you get in?"
Dorothy asked.
"Just now and I'm starvin'-got
anything good to eat
Grace?" Sully grinned.
"For you,
only the best" Grace remarked. She was proud of her
cooking and knew Sully
was just teasing her.
"Sully, I figured you would
have gone to Boston to
meet up with Michaela and the kids? Why are you back
here?" Dorothy asked.
"I didn't know
they'd gone to Boston
until Horace told me," he answered.
"Oh dear. I was sure that Michaela would have wired
you about her trip.
I feel bad about dragging you all the way back just to
have them gone,"
Dorothy sighed.
"No need to
worry Dorothy, Horace is sending a wire and I'll be
back on the train soon
as I've had some rest and something to eat."
"One hot meal comin' right up Sully" Grace remarked as
she raced off to
prepare a plate for the hungry traveller.
"Dorothy, your
telegram didn't say much
but I gathered somethin' was wrong?" Sully asked.
"Oh, no Sully. No
everything's all right now. Everyone's well. I didn't
mean to scare you.
It's just that well....."
"Yes?" he asked
"I think they were
all just missing you
and I hope it didn't seem like meddlin' but, well,
Grace and I felt you and
Michaela-well that you two needed to see each other.
That's all. I am so
sorry if you got the wrong impression Sully!" Dorothy's
voice sounded
sympathetic.
"It's okay Dorothy, I
was just a little worried that something was very
wrong, but I'm glad you
meddled. It was time for me to come home." He smiled
back at her and
placed his rugged hand over hers, patting it gently.
Dorothy blushed and looking
back at those steely
blue eyes, knew very well the attraction Michaela had
for this handsome man.
Dorothy had always admired Sully. she knew him to be
honest and hard
working with such a sad past and was relieved to see
that he had found a
new life with Michaela. they were so different in many
ways but so much
alike in others. they belonged together.
Michaela knew that taking Katie
shopping in Boston
would be both a delight and a chore but when the first
day was finally over
and they had returned with boxes filled with new
frocks, shoes, petticoats
and oh so many wonderful things for Katie, she
resigned-it was well worth
the effort.
"I think you should put on a
little fashion parade
for us Katie. Wouldn't that be fun?" Michaela asked her
already excited
youngster.
"Okay Mama,
but could I have some
more ice cream, please?" Katie knew how to get to
Michaela.
"After you
try on all your new clothes. I promise we'll go get
you some ice cream.
Okay my sweetheart?"
"Okay Mama, it's a deal!" they all
laughed and Katie
seemed pleased with herself.
Michaela had to
laugh. This little girl of mine is growing up far too
fast. She's even
making deals with her mother now. I wonder what she'll
come up with next?
Michaela couldn't help but wish that Sully were here
to see this. He was
missing so much of Katie's newfound characteristics.
She was just
putting the finishing touches on Katie's new ensemble
when Rebecca knocked
on the bedroom door.
"You have a telegram Michaela.
It's from Sully! He's
on his way here!" Rebecca gleamed as she passed the
small piece of paper to
her sister.
"I hope you don't mind that I read it but
as soon as I saw
Sully's name at the bottom, I just knew you would be
happy" Rebecca looked
at her sister with a quizzical smile.
"Sully's
coming here?" Michaela
'was' overjoyed. "That's wonderful! Katie, Daddy's
coming! He's coming here
to be with us! Isn't that great?"
"Poppy, oh
my Poppy!!" Katie
jumped up and down with glee.
"Settle down young lady, you'll rip
that pretty new
dress!" Michaela smiled.
"But Mama,
my Poppy is coming. I love my Poppy. I miss him so
much!" Katie sighed.
"I know my darling, so do I". And that
was all that needed
to be said.
