![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hello and welcome to the Lake County Team OS/2 Site. Whether your using OS/2 now or are just curious this site will provide contacts and links that will help to answer your questions about OS/2. This site is for everyone, beginner or expert. There are no dumb questions, and feedback is encouraged (Press the red "Feedback" button on any page to get to the feedback page).
About OS/2 WarpOS/2 Warp is an advanced, 32-bit operating system that runs on Intel/AMD/Cyrix computer systems (that's ordinary PC's folks, not Macintosh) and also runs legacy DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.1 sofware. It does not run Windows 95-only software or Windows NT 4.0 software (there may be a solution using Citrix's WinFrame) but will run some Win32s software (usually marked as "Runs on Windows 3.x and Ready for Windows 95").
OS/2 is part of IBM's family of operating systems and is used by most of the
larger corporations and bank systems worldwide for their mission-critical
applications because of it's reliability and security features. You'll find it
running Bank ATM machines, unattended Information Kiosks in major cites and
airports, Government Servers and Workstations, Internet and Intranet Servers,
and Manufacturing Robot systems among others. Some of us run it at home too
It is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses because once it is running you'll not need to "fool with" it again (unlike Windows) - like the Enegizer Bunny "It just keeps going and going". It will run all of your "legacy" apps from your old DOS (or Windows) computers and is a "Better DOS than DOS" and a "Better Windows than Windows". If one of your programs is ill-behaved (the dreaded Windows GPF) it will not crash the system or lose your precious business data. I've had OS/2 LAN Server running for 3 months before I took it down to clean out the accumulated dust - unlike Windows NT Server which crashes regularly 2 or 3 times a week and Windows 3.1/95 at 2 to 3 times a day. All versions of OS/2 Warp include a "Bonus Pak" CD-ROM with sample applications and the "Internet Access Kit" to allow you to connect to the Internet right out of the box - Warp was the first operating system to include this type of application suite in the basic package - and you don't need to buy a "Plus Pak" (like with windows) to get the full Internet Suite. The IAK can be used with other ISP's besides IBM's Avantis and it has a "Software Updates" icon that will work from any provider to get automatic upgrades to the IAK. How's that for "User Friendly".
About OS/2 Warp ServerIBM's OS/2 Warp Server combines both Warp and IBM's LAN Server products into one and is the perfect solution for any SMB LAN (that's "Windows" networking folks) including Windows NT and Windows for Workgroups. OS/2 Warp Sever also integrates well with Novell networks and adds many new features to them. It has a full TCP/IP connection suite for Intranet/Internet use and you can even hook up macintoshes to it. There may be a solution available for serving Windows 95 applications on Warp Server also (see Warp section above).

About Team OS/2"Team OS/2 is a highly informal organisation dedicated to telling the world about the advantages of Operating System/2 (OS/2), an advanced operating system for personal computers. Faced with a large amount of ignorance and misinformation about OS/2, Teamers respond by demonstrating the operating system to others, and educating them about its strengths and weaknesses. Teamers are all volunteers with a genuine enthusiasm for OS/2 that translates into a wish to spread that enthusiasm to others."
