I was watching WNEW Channel 5 TV, just past midnight Dec 8/9, when the bulletin came on. John Lennon had been shot and killed. Murdered? I thought. I cried a single tear. I was nearly 24. Days later someone said this was a "peculiarly American death", and I agreed, even though I'm a native New Yorker.

I'm sorry America did this to you, John. I didn't agree with everything you said but I think you said--and sang--many intelligent, thoughtful things. Thanks. Now this year--1998--another foreign-born entertainer--Phil Hartman, a Canadian--was murdered in his home in America by an American-- his wife, Brynn. Days after this happened, I was sitting in the KFC in Flushing, Queens, when John's song "Jealous Guy" came over the speakers. Oh my, how appropriate, I thought.

So tomorrow, December 8, 1998, I plan to go to "Strawberry Fields" in Central Park, as I've done several times over the years, to join the annual Lennon memorial celebration. I hope some woman-- maybe me--will sing "Jealous Guy" at that celebration, in memory of John, and Phil and Brynn.

And John, if you run into Brynn in the afterlife, teach her that song.
