Portrait of the Month

LIZARDO
On July 28th 1997,the Dominican Folklore, known as being colorful and full of joy, turned sad and dressed in black: Its most important exponent has died, just before his 67th birthday.

Born in Santo Domingo on August 4th 1930, Rafael Fradique Lizardo Barinas went to college in his home country but later he had the opportunity to study in Cuba and Stockholm, specializing in Antropology and Ethnomusicology.
In 1975 he founded the National Folkloric Ballet of Santo Domingo and has taught folcloristic dance in various schools all over the world.

For many he was the most important advocate and investigator about true folklore in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean and his findings have been published in innumeable books and essays.

He also was our tutor and patiently answered our questions about the traditions and habits of our country which have been posted and will continue to appear on this website.

The least we felt we could do is to dedicate him with this month's edition of "The Dominican of the Month".
