    The Dominican Republic - tips for future residents

    Miscellaneous: Bits & Pieces

    • dot marks the bits | no dot marks the pieces
    • Since May 25th , 1997 all US and Canadian cirizens entering the Dominican Republic as a tourist do not necessarily need to carry a passport; they may also enter with any form of official ID which integrates a photograph.
      Note:It seems though that not all immigration officers and Airline staff have already heard of the new regulations !!! -- causing delays and long waiting lines at the arrival.
    • All foreigners who enter the country on other purposes than a tourist ( like students & future residents) must carry a valid passport.
    Make sure you carry at all times a valid ID with you when moving around in the country;
    a fotocopy of your passport or other ID will do -- even your hotel ID card, anything which will qualify you as a "tourist" -- unless you are already a legal resident and have your residency card.

    The reason for it is that the government is determined to get rid of all illegal foreign residents and there are frequent controls, if you cannot produce any ID , expect to pass at least 48 hrs. in jail for investigating your identity.

    • Many public taxis and tourist taxis run with propane gas to keep the costs down
    • Their appearance mostly resembles more a wreck than a car which may include the propane gas system running the engine
    If you feel uncomfortable to ride such a "wreck" running with propane gas, you do not need to look in the trunk or under the hood any more before boarding one.
    Since May 1st, all public vehicles running with propane gas have been censored and must display a 4" by 4" yellow sticker with the red letters G.L.P. on their windscreen.
    We will constantly post more bits & pieces -- so keep visiting !
