Of course when built by Fray Nicolas de Ovando in 1506 it looked much better and was dedicated to function as the first public hospital in America. On our photograph you can see the basic structure and roof still in one piece; if you look for it in today's colonial city of Santo Domingo you will find the roof missing. It came down during the construction of the new church Nuestra Seņora de la Altagracia next door in the 1930's. |
