  • -ITIS
A very dominican noun ending, may be applied to any adjective thus converting it into a noun, let us give you some ideas and then you may invent some new ones yourself:
    • Flojitis , from "flojo" which describes the most common desease in the Dominican Republic -- no its not diarhea , it is "no money in my pockets", do you have the flojitis too ?
    • Borrachitis, from "borracho", if you have flojitis you may not have the borrachitis unless you are constantly invited to drink !
    • Hambritis, from "hambre", so did you not have your meal today ?
    -ITO,- ITA
A diminutive word ending which is applied only if describing a situation or action where chidlren are involved-- sorry, we cannot make it to your party, because our daughter is malosito ( she's got the flue).

    JALAR-JALARSE
If you suffer from flojitis and therefore have constant hambritis you will jalar yourself in no time ( but please do not try this diet !). You may also jalar yourself with liquors in Santo Domingo.
    JALADERA
Never try to be part of a jaladera it always involves firearms.
    JERINGA
This noun is usually shouted by a Dominican who seems very disturbed, so if someone greets you with here he comes again que jeringa ! -- you better move on.
    JERINGARSE
As a verb it describes a favortite Dominican activity -- borrow money, spend it, cannot pay back, borrow some more ...sounds familiar ?!
    JIERRAZO
Once the participants of the jaladera ran out of bullets, they grabbed pieces of junk metal and started to dish out jierrazos !
    JOBERO, JOBERA
Pronounced more like "overo" or "hovero" it is not related to horses like in other Latin American countries; over here if you are called jobero or jobera your face and skin are spotted.
    JOBO
Known as "Jocote" among other Hispanics, it has the scientific name of " Spondias myrobalanus " but tastes much better than it sounds.
    New!
    JODIENDA
Used to express discomfort: "and after we have driven another circle around the block, we hopefully will terminate this jodienda (of trying to find an empty parking slot ...)" (sent to us by Ceylin Guillermo via email)
    JUCHAR
Do not juchar anyone, or you may regret it ! ( Hint: replace the verb by the strongest alternative you can come up for "tease").

    New!

SORRY, we have not come up with any word starting with a K !
But we are glad to receive your suggestions

    LABORANTISMO
This noun has been used for decades by Dominicans to describe (certainly not all) political activity in their country; unfortunately it is not associated with "serious", "honest" or "popular".
    LAMBISQUERO
Some first time visitors to our country say all Dominicans are of this type, but you must not call all gentle people flatterers.
    LAVAGALLOS
Also used in Venezueal and Colombia, this is definitely bad news for the gourmet drinkers, as it describes real bad firewater ! Literally translated this means "rooster cleaner" -- which derives from the habit to clean open wounds of gamecocks after a lost cockfight with cheap rum.
    LEBREJEAR
As not all Dominicans are lambisqueros, not all of them are lebrejearing too -- but on weekends many like to go on a binge !
    LLAMADITA
Great, if you want to lebrejear this weekend give me a llamdita on Friday afternoon !
    LOCRIO
Known as "locro" in the Andean countries, the Dominican version is not based on corn but on rice and tastes great with fish or meat.

Keep visiting -- will be continued !!! If you know a word or frase, you would like to ask about or include in this list -- E-mail Us.
