The Medical Examination

The INS requires that you undergo a Medical Examination with an INS approved physician before you undergo the visa interview. (Click here to see a list of INS approved physicians in South Africa) In the package that was sent to be by the JHB consulate, I recieved two forms that needed to be filled out by the physician. The first is Optional Form 157 and the other is Supplemental Form to OF-157.

The Medical Examination covers:

• a check that you have had the required Vaccinations. (Dr completes Suppl to OF-157)
• a physical examination (to confirm that you don't have defects, diseases or disabilities) (Dr completes OF-157)
• an examination for Turberculosis (X-Ray of chest) (Dr completes OF-157)
• a serologic test for Syphilis (Dr completes OF-157)
• a serologic test for HIV antibody(Dr completes OF-157)

• Make sure you phone to find out what your specific physicians wants/needs before you go spending money on tests etc.
• My INS approved Dr. required that I have the chest X-Ray and serological tests done BEFORE making an appointment with him.
• It cost R100.00

The Vaccinations :

• I found out before hand what was required by the INS regarding vaccinations. Like most people in the real world, I had no record of any vaccinations I had growing up, so I went to my own Doctor and had a series of blood tests done to find out what I was immune to. I had him write a note confirming what I was immune to and had him vaccinate me against the rest of the stuff that I wasn't immune to. When I went to the INS approved doctor he said I was a "fool" and should have contacted him before I had spent the R500.00 on needless blood tests and immunizations.

• Some of the stipulated vacinations are not required because of age, country, etc. - Find out from the INS physician first!
