College Slam Codes

NBA Jam, anyone?

Take NBA Jam, strip it of all all pro players, throw in college teams, add some new sounds and special moves, and you have College Slam. Acclaim didn't even bother changing it in any way. Just read the opening credits. It says, original game engine copyright Midway Manufacturing. Since there was no game College Slam released in the arcades, one can infer that the game referred to was NBA Jam. How sad.
The graphics are identical to NBA Jam PSX, except for the pro licenses (or lack thereof). A few cool special graphics were added, such as tornados, invisible players, and disappearing baskets. The "He's on fire!" graphic has been changed from a flaming ball in NBA Jam to a ball with twinkling stars falling off of it. How lame.
The sounds are very nice, but a lot of them are direct copies off of NBA Jam. The college bands playing theme songs are a nice touch. See for yourself here.
There is no originality to this game. If you've played Jam, this one is not necessary to play. It may be worth a rent just to hear the cool college tunes, though.
Controls are up to their usual NBA Jam standard. The players do what you tell them to, and with three buttons, you just can't go wrong. There are no problems doing what you have to do to win games.
All of the features that made NBA Jam a blast to play are gone. There are no hidden characters or real players, only two generic players that change in size. Thus, there is only a shallow two on two basketball game.

And now for the grades...
