Crash Bandicoot Super Passwords
Hasn't anyone ever heard of a Bandicoot before?

Finally, Sony's mascot platform character makes his first but obviously not final appearance, in the cutting edge platform title Crash Bandicoot. While it contains some standard elements of a platform game, its graphics are better than anything else out there.
Crash's graphics are incredible. Levels have a 3d appearance, and Crash is given the ability to move in 3D. Small details, such as fluttering butterflies and rustling leaves, add to the game's atmosphere. The best graphical achievement in this game is simply Crash himself. The character graphic is simply incredible, with many original poses and animations.
Crash has some interesting sound effects, but some pretty lame background music. Yelps, forest noises, and boxes exploding accompany the action quite nicely, but the hop'n'bop music leaves something to be desired. Overall, the sounds get the job done, but it seems as if not enough effort was put into them.
Originality? Ever played SNES Donkey Kong Country? Crash Bandicoot is Donkey Kong with revved graphics and new enemies. The basic principles are just too similar....spin, jump, spin, jump, etc. It's nothing especially new.
Once again, Crash Bandicoot plays a lot like a standard platform game, a la Mario or Sonic, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The control is very accurate, but the timing of 3d jumps has to be practiced. Gameplay is very limited and simple, because the game plays in the same linear style as Sonic the Hedgehog, though it gives the appearance of 3D. Overall, it has no great gameplay innovations, but it's still a very solid platformer.
While not offering incredible new gaming techniques, Crash Bandicoot is fun to play, though for a limited time. Once the game is finished, there is no real incentive to go back and find the gems. It's still worth buying just to see the beautiful graphics, and in the process provides a few hours of gaming pleasure.
And now for the grades...
- Graphics-20/20
- Sounds-4/5
- Originality/Innovation-3/5
- Play Control/Gameplay-36/40
- FunFactor-27/30
- Total Score-90/100
