The Ultimate in Track and Field returns!!

Combine the original button mashing Track and Field NES classic with Tekken-like graphics, and what do you get? The awesome International Track and Field, by Konami. This is one of the greatest titles ever and, to be honest, I never wanted to put down the controller to write this review.
Visually, we are treated to Tekken-like athletes performing in all of the Track and Field events. Subtle details abound, like the ripples in the pool before the swimming event. Load time is non-existent, just like Tekken. Fluid running, jumping and throwing motions are just fantastic. There is nothing that I can say about this game which hurts it graphically.
The game's sounds are decent, but not spectacular. For example, the quality of the roaring crowd is superb, while the announcements of distances acheived are pretty awful. With a little more work, the sounds could have been great, but the pathetic voices really hold this game back in that area.
While still a sequel to the original Track and Field, this title's innovations are astounding. I have yet to witness another title which captures the competitive nature of this one. Though multiplayer games are an option, the main goal here is to shatter your own records, a feat which is not easily accomplished. This adds two pieces to the game, the self-competition and the competition with others, which has yet to be reproduced successfully.
While not very sophisticated, the gameplay of International Track and Field is very addicting, which is not too good for your hands and wrists. The intense button-mashing leads to hand and wrist cramps, so be sure to take frequent breaks between events. Timing and precision is critical in most events, so the game is not entirely button-mashing. For example, while doing the javelin throw, the player must tap the two run buttons, (Circle and Square by default) while timing the angle of the throw using the x or triangle button. This eventually leads to two buttons being tapped while one is being held for a specific amount of time. While difficult at first, it becomes very addicting very quickly. The controls are very simple but they effectively get the job done. I don't see how a game of this genre could employ different controls from these.
Konami's International Track and Field is a fun-filled game which should be owned by all PSX players. Whether you play alone or with friends, this is definitely a game to own. Run, don't walk, to your nearest dealer, buy the game, call up a couple of friends, and prepare yourself for nonstop competitive action.

And now for the grades...
